Objective: The aim of this study was to understand the attitudes of front-line clinical nurses toward hospice care in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, to provide a source of reference for hospice care education and training in hospitals treating patients with COVID-19. Method: Front-line nurses from a designated COVID-19 hospital in Wuhan, China, participated. Participants completed the Chinese versions of the General Information Questionnaire, the Frommelt Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying Scale, the Jefferson Scale of Empathy, and the General Self-Efficacy Scale. Results: A total of 149 questionnaires were included in the analysis. The median total hospice care attitudes score was median 102.00(interquartile range, 95.5-120.50). The nurses’ attitudes toward hospice care were significantly associated with their age, knowledge of hospice care, level of empathy, and self-efficacy. Conclusion: The attitudes of front-line nurses toward hospice care need to be improved. Hospital departments should establish an effective public health emergency strategy, provide training to increase front-line nurses’ knowledge and practical experience of hospice care, cultivate nurses’ empathy, and enhance their sense of self-efficacy, in order to improve the quality of hospice care for patients and their families.

Abstract Background Nurses are the main caregivers to dying patients. It is inevitable to face or deal with death-related events. The ability of death-coping self-efficacy (DCS) is very important, which can reduce the risk of nursing staff, suffering from adverse emotional distress and help them to better participate in the end-of-life care of the patients and improve the quality of care. Methods Using the convenient sampling method, a total of 572 nurses were included in this study from a tertiary hospital in Hangzhou, China. The situation and influencing factors of the clinical nurses' DCS were explored using the General Information Questionnaires and DCSS. (DCS scale). Results The scores of each parameter, ranging from low to high, were as following: grief coping, death preparation, and hospice care. The influencing factors of nurses' DCS included the hospice care education courses received in the last year, the experience of accompanying the family members of the deceased, and the attitude towards death. Conclusions The overall self-efficacy of nurses in palliative care was at a medium level and the sense of their self-efficacy in coping with the grief and preparation for death needed to be strengthened. The nursing managers should pay attention to the education and training of palliative care, which will strengthen the psychological and spiritual caring abilities of the nurses for the patients and their families, increase their experience of end-of-life care, improve their cognition of palliative care, and help them in establishing a correct view of death, thereby leading to improve the quality of palliative care.

Aims and Scope: Perception of health related quality of life (QoL) may result from the complex interplay between the severity of the disease and the patient’s psyche. It the present study we assumed that anxiety and coping based on emotions may contribute to reduced QoL in patients with mild systolic heart failure (HF). Methods: We examined mainly males with systolic HF (almost all with ischemic etiology of HF, all classified in the NYHA class II, receiving standard pharmacological treatment). Each patient underwent a physical examination, routine laboratory tests and standard transthoracic echocardiography and completed psychological questionnaires assessing: coping styles, sense of self efficacy, acceptance of illness, optimism and the level of anxiety and QoL (by Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire). Results: Emotion-oriented coping was strongly positively related to an overall score reflecting QoL (r=0.37) as well as to both dimensions of QoL, with exceptionally high correlation with the emotional dimension (r=0.24 and r=0.62, respectively, all p<0.05). More reduced QoL (overall score as well as scores in both analysed dimensions) was significantly (all p<0.05) but weakly (r=-0.21, r=-0.20 and r=-0.26, respectively) related to lower acceptance of the illness. Higher level of anxiety was related to more reduced QoL (all p<0.05). Reduced QoL in emotional dimension was related to the tendency to avoidance-oriented coping (r=0.26, including also a sub style based on distraction, r=0.34) as well as to lower sense of self-efficacy (r=-0.20) and lower level of optimism (r=-0.20, all p<0.05). Conclusion: The results indicate that HF patients are psychologically diverse, which is not related to disease severity. However, QoL was related to emotion-oriented coping and anxiety. Psychological support for patients with HF should be focused on teaching adequate methods of coping and reducing anxiety.

The lifetime prevalence of sexual assault was examined in a representative sample of the general Norwegian adult population ( n = 1,792), in addition to the association between sexual assault and health, quality of life, and general self-efficacy. Respondents completed questionnaires assessing these factors. Overall, 6.7% ( n = 120) of the respondents (10.9% of women and 1.9% of men) reported an experience of sexual assault. Respondents in the sexual assault group reported significantly worse mental and physical health as well as poorer quality of life and lower self-efficacy, compared with those without sexual assault experience. The most prevalent mental problems in the sexual assault group were depression (61.7%), sleep problems (58.3%), eating disorders (26.7%), and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms at a clinical level (25.0%). The most prevalent physical problems were chronic pain (47.5%) and musculoskeletal disease (30.8%). The proportions of physical and mental health problems were not significantly different between male and female victims. Results indicated that having experienced sexual assault during one’s life appears to be associated with lifetime occurrence of multiple health problems for both genders and reduces a person’s perceived general self-efficacy and quality of life.

Background. Patient demand and clinician interest have driven professional training in integrative therapies, but few rigorous evaluations have been published. Methods. This project evaluated the proof of concept of training in acupressure, guided imagery, massage, and Reiki on clinicians’ sense of self-efficacy in providing nondrug therapies, self-confidence in providing compassionate care, and engagement with work. Results. Three out of 4 topics met minimum enrollment numbers; 22 of 24 participants completed follow-up as well as pretraining surveys. All would recommend the training to others and planned changes in personal and professional care. There were significant improvements in self-efficacy in using nondrug therapies, confidence in providing compassionate care, and unplanned absenteeism ( P < .05 for each). Conclusion. Training in integrative therapies is feasible and associated with significant improvements in clinicians’ sense of self-efficacy, confidence in providing compassionate care, and engagement with work. Additional studies are needed to determine the impact on quality of care and long-term workforce engagement.
