Usability research is important in our age of developing technology as it has significant implications for how technology is perceived by users. In 2017 Tesla released the Model 3, their most affordable electric-only vehicle to date. The vehicle is unique in its simplistic inner controls, composed of a single centralized touchscreen and instrumentation on the steering wheel. A heuristic analysis was conducted on the interface system of a Model 3 and several heuristic violations were identified. Suggestions to remedy the usability issues were provided along with considerations for future design of such interfaces.

In this usability evaluation of the Fountain of the Lions software application aimed to be used by museum visitors, the software is analysed using three established usability research methods: personas, a cognitive walkthrough (task analysis) with three participants, and an individual heuristic evaluation. Areas in which the software succeeds and areas which could use improvement are discussed based on the results of these analyses, including use of the methods.

The opportunity for a person with disability to drive a vehicle presents a major step towards a full and independent life. In some cases, employment is not possible due to the inability to control a motor vehicle. Unfortunately, today’s driving evaluations are inadequate because of the qualitative techniques used. This paper presents a new approach to the driving assessment of persons with disabilities in which an advanced vehicle interface system is introduced. This system combines a six-degree-of-freedom force reflecting haptic device and a commercially available vehicle modification system. Innovative ergonomic tasks are presented to determine the appropriate position and orientation of the required driving input device. Further, model based computer assistance is incorporated by using assistance functions such as scaling and tremor filtering. Results, obtained from testing a subject with Muscular Dystrophy (MD), demonstrated that the quantitative ergonomic measurements obtained successfully determined the appropriate position and orientation of the modified steering wheel device.

Mobile money is creating entirely new opportunity for mobile devices and provides functionalities similar to e-commerce. The nature of these devices pose two major limitations that are small screen size and lack of input capability, which makes designing applications for mobile devices a challenging task. It is important that the user interface is user-friendly and help users easily obtain their desired results. This study applied heuristic evaluation to examine the interface of SMS based mobile money application provided by vodafone called M-Paisa in Fiji. User interface evaluation of this application based on seven heuristic involving fifteen experts is described. The results show that there are minor usability problems with M-Paisa interfaces and we provide our recommendations to address them. Findings of this research can be applied to develop a set of guidelines to support the future design of effective interfaces for other mobile money applications.

Business Intelligence (BI) applications provide business information to drive decision support. Usability is one of the factors determining the optimal use and eventual benefit derived from BI applications. The documented need for more BI usability research together with the practical necessity for BI evaluation guidelines in the mining industry provides the rationale for this study. The purpose of the study was to investigate the usability evaluation of BI applications in the context of a coal mining organization. The research is guided by the question: How can existing usability criteria be customized to evaluate the usability of BI applications. The research design included user observation, heuristic evaluation and a survey. Based on observations made during user support on a BI application used at a coal mining organization a log of usability issues was compiled. The usability issues extracted from this log was compared and contrasted with general usability criteria from literature to synthesize an initial set of BI usability evaluation criteria. These criteria were used as the basis for a heuristic evaluation of the BI application used at the coal mining organization. The same BI application was also evaluated using the Software Usability Measurement Inventory (SUMI) standardized questionnaire. The results from the two evaluations were triangulated and then compared with the BI user issues again to contextualize the findings and synthesize a validated and refined set of criteria. The main contribution of the study is the usability evaluation criteria for BI applications presented as guidelines. These guidelines deviate from existing evaluation guidelines in the emphasis on information architecture, learnability and operability.

Besides recognizing the importance of incorporating usability evaluation techniques in the design and development phase of any user interface (UI), it is also very important that designers recognize the benefits and limitations of the different usability inspection methods. This is because the quality of the usability evaluation is dependent on the method used. Two of the more popular usability evaluation techniques are user testing and heuristic analysis. The main objective of this study was to compare the efficiency and effectiveness between user testing and heuristic analysis in evaluating four different commercial websites. Comparing the proportion of usability problems and the type of problems addressed by these two methods both in the early and later stage of the design process does this. The results showed that both user testing and heuristic analysis addressed very different usability problems and with the exception compatibility and security and privacy problems, where heuristic analysis outperforms user testing, both methods are equally efficient and effective in addressing different categories of usability problems.

Hasil dari heuristic evaluation dikelompokkan kedalam  masing-masing instrumen yaitu visibility of system status dengan nilai 0,75, match between system and the real world dengan nilai 0,25, user control and freedom dengan nilai 0,25, consistency and standards dengan nilai 0,75, error prevention dengan nilai 1, recognition rather than recall dengan nilai 1,25, flexibility and efficiency of use dengan nilai 0,25, Aesthetic and minimalist design dengan nilai 0,25, help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors dengan nilai 1 dan Help and documentation dengan nilai 0.
