An Investigation of Team Inputs, Processes, And Emergent States on Performance in a Spaceship Bridge Simulation

This investigation serves to provide evidence on the effects of various input variables on intact teams through repeated team performance sessions in a team spaceship bridge simulation (i.e. Artemis). The Input Mediator/Moderator Output Input (IMOI) model provides a systems engineering an approach to understand various team and individual input variables contribution to the development of team processes and emergent states, ultimately leading to a team’s ability to perform together. While various prior research initiatives have served to contribute to the pool of evidence of which input variables are most highly predictive of a team’s overall performance, the need for further and recursive input to output investigations is needed. Our results indicate perceived team effectiveness and cohesion are significant predictors in team performance and that skill and knowledge of a simulated environment may overshadow team-specific effectiveness indicators as the team gains experience.

ABSTRACT Greenhouse gas (GHG) assurance is increasingly used by companies as a means to increase stakeholder confidence in the quality of externally reported carbon emissions. The multidisciplinary nature of these engagements means that assurance is performed primarily by multidisciplinary teams. Prior research suggests the effectiveness of such teams could be affected by team composition and team processes. We employ a retrospective field study to examine the impact of educational diversity and team member elaboration on multidisciplinary GHG assurance team effectiveness. Results show that team processes such as sufficiency of elaboration on different team member perspectives significantly increases the perceived effectiveness of the teams. While educational diversity is not found to directly improve perceived team effectiveness, it is found to have a positive effect through increasing perceived sufficiency of elaboration. These findings have important implications for standard setters and audit firms undertaking GHG assurance engagements.

This paper documents a probabilistic analysis of the secondary flow system in a modern commercial turbofan engine. The purpose of this analysis is to investigate the variability in the high and low rotor bearing loads and total secondary flow due to the inherent uncertainty in manufacturing processes and engine performance. In addition to quantifying the variability in bearing load and secondary flow, the sensitivity of the parameters to individual input variables is determined. The system was found to behave linearly, resulting in negligible mean shifts due to input variation. The importance of correlation among the performance parameters will be addressed, as well as the effects of different correlations. Methods used to reduce the time required for the analysis will also be discussed. This type of analysis has many applications in cost reduction, engine design, optimization, and root cause analysis that will be covered in this paper.

The purpose of this research is to seek and identify the impact teamwork has on organizational performance. The research to understand the teamwork quality, team cohesiveness and team performance in employee performance, identify the positive or negative effects of teamwork on employees and to examine the impact of teamwork on organization performance. Therefore, it is to determine how teamwork could effect and improve University employee’s performance within the organization. In fact, it is also to understand on how methods like teamwork quality, team cohesiveness, and teamwork performance have could be used to have positive effects in employee overall performance. The research study used correlation techniques in order to analyze the relationship between two variables that was Teamwork and Organization Performance. In many of the journals and article that was collected, there was clear evidence that teamwork and other measures of team performance are positively related with organization performance. The study of the research shown that there was a significant positive impact of teamwork on organizational performance and employee’s overall performance.

Abstract The international research on teams, which is inspired by the input-process-output model, is mostly empirical. Researchers in this field look for causal explanations between independent (e.g., team size and team composition) and dependent (e.g., team performance) variables. Recently, some critics have pointed to the deficits in this model. Especially, the temporal, contextual, and dynamic aspects of teams need to be investigated further (multilevel approach). Emergent states, such as team cognitions, team emotions, and team hierarchies, comprise a promising field of study that leads to a more comprehensive and holistic understanding of teams. These emergent states offer an opportunity to reconcile former concepts (Lewin’s gestalt, Koestler’s holarchy, and Cattell’s syntality) with topical team research. Therefore, the future of research on teams may partly lie in its past.

Technology is changing the landscape of learning and teaching in America. The use of virtual worlds enable engineering and technology programs to implement software programs such as Second Life and Open Simulator to enhance what they may currently already have. Additionally, virtual worlds can add a more dynamic environment in the online classroom for multiple platforms such as the Personal Computer (PC), wearables, and mobile devices. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a review of these programs to include how to implement these items into an engineering course. Further detailed in this submission is how to incorporate Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) documentation and other engineering guidelines into the projects. Included in this chapter is a detailed layout of a simulated environment as well as various approaches of structuring and organization for classroom activities.

Team effectiveness depends on the performance of each team member. Success or failure of a team highly relies on the interaction level of all members. Effective teamwork is a critical learning outcome for engineering students and it is one of the most desired skill required by employers. All engineering graduates must have the ability to function in multidisciplinary teams. Prior studies had also found that, many Malaysian employers agreed that the lack of team working skill among the Malaysian graduates would risk the survival of an organisation and in result developing low-level interpersonal skills which is equally necessary for working effectively in a team. However, in the engineering education literature most of the previous studies have focused on the area of professional environments. A very few studies were conducted in the context of educational environments to identify the factors that affect the team effectiveness in higher education. Moreover several internal and external factors also influence the outcomes of student teamwork and not every group is effective in their objectives and numerous groups fail. Therefore, this study is designed to identify the underlying factors that help students to develop their teamwork skill, thus improving team effectiveness. Hence, upon analysing the articles found in this study, nine (factors were identified to have more impacts towards team effectiveness, which were (1) team communication, (2) trust, (3) team cohesion, (4) team leadership, (5) team coordination and cooperation, (6) team commitment, (7) team performance, (8) team satisfaction, and (9) task interdependence. In addition, after comparing several models and theories, a conceptual model that demonstrates relationships among the identified factors was proposed. It asserted team performance and team satisfaction as the predictors of team effectiveness.

Given the important role of information technology, virtuality has become crucial issue in contemporary organizations. Virtual teams are comprised of members who are located in more than one physical location. They need to be effectively collaborating to harness their full performance capabilities in order to compete in the highly competitive environments. However, virtual team effectiveness is affected by determinants of trust which include three types; personality, cognitive and institutional-based trust. Therefore, this paper examines the impact of trust determinants on virtual team effectiveness represented in virtual team satisfaction and performance. Through a survey of 125 virtual team members who had experienced at least two years in this field, the results indicated that determinants of trust positively influence virtual team satisfaction and virtual team performance. The authors' structural equations modeling findings also support our hypothetical predictions that personality- based trust, cognitive- based trust and institutional- based trust have a dramatic impact on both of virtual team satisfaction and virtual team performance. Moreover, institutional- based trust is the uppermost driver of virtual team effectiveness. This study provides novel insights into virtual team behaviours, managerial and research implications for effective virtual team.
