Short report: Development and utility of the Family-Centered Autism Navigation interview

Navigating various systems, resources, and supports available for families of children with autism spectrum disorder is challenging. Family navigation is a potentially important support system for families of children with autism spectrum disorder. Family navigators are professionals who engage with families to enhance access to early identification and intervention services via shared navigation plans that help meet the family’s priorities and goals when navigating systems of support. Systematic processes and tools facilitating the development of a shared navigation plan with families following diagnosis are currently limited. This short report describes product development of the Family-Centered Autism Navigation using quality improvement methods including Lean Launch and qualitative methodology. Lay abstract When a parent learns of their child’s autism diagnosis, they may be overwhelmed, confused, and frustrated. Family navigation services are designed to improve access to care. While these services are a promising intervention to enhance well-being and developmental outcomes, there are limited tools that can systematically facilitate the development of a shared navigation plan that prioritizes the concerns of the family. The Family-Centered Autism Navigation semi-structured interview guide is designed for family navigators to triage and prioritize caregiver’s needs to coordinate and navigate systems of care after learning of their child’s autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. The goals of the Family-Centered Autism Navigation interview are to (1) identify family and child strengths; (2) identify family/caregiver concerns regarding navigation of services and systems following their child’s diagnosis of autism; (3) measure change in caregiver knowledge, ability and skill as it relates to understanding, remembering, and evaluating information they receive; and (4) assist with the development of a shared navigation plan. When using the Family-Centered Autism Navigation guide, family navigators and caregivers co-create a family-centered, prioritized action plan that supports and prepares caregivers as they navigate systems of care. This short report describes the development process of the Family-Centered Autism Navigation semi-structured interview guide. We utilized brief interviews ( n = 42), expert feedback ( n = 13), and quality improvement strategies ( n = 2 family navigators) to develop the questions and determine the usability of the Family-Centered Autism Navigation interview in practice.

Multiple authors have called for strong empirical evaluations to strengthen the foundation of Animal-Assisted Interventions. Carefully choosing the outcome measures of these studies is important, as choosing the wrong outcomes may lead to a failure to detect effects. The current study therefore compares and contrasts the use of several outcome measures, to assess the effect of an equine-assisted intervention for a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder: (1) a semi-structured interview with both parents, specifically designed for children with cognitive disabilities, (2) a general screening instrument filled out by both parents separately, which can be used to assess children’s psycho-social problems, and (3) systematic observations of social and communication skills during the equine-assisted sessions. All instruments indicated an improvement in the participant’s social and communication skills. We found differences between the interview and questionnaires with regard to parents’ perception of aggression regulation and interacting with peers. Differences with regard to parental reports and observations were found for play development and anxiety. The observations provided a detailed view of the child’s development during the intervention, which yielded an interesting hypothesis in terms of the current dose–response discussion in AAI for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought important challenges to society and families, with repercussions on child behavior and development with special importance for children with neurodevelopmental disorders that affect and impair the child’s functionality: Autism spectrum disorder. Thus, we set as objective to Identify and analyze the scientific evidence of interventions performed on children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the context of a Covid-19 pandemic. A search was conducted in the MEDLINE, PubMed, CINHAL databases and gray literature. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (EAP) may become more anxious, agitated and unregulated with the change in routines to which they are subjected in this phase of the Covid 19 pandemic. Autism disorders affect communication, social interaction and behavior, usually with a tendency to be repetitive and routine, but in a scenario of pandemic and social isolation, anxiety and agitation may be more pronounced and, in more severe cases, there may be less capacity to function. It is important that the family of the child with ASD propose cooperative activities or resources that they have at home and that can be adapted. The insertion of some tasks contributes to the establishment of the ability to play independently. In it, the child gets involved independently. And so it prevents negative behaviors from occurring due to leisure and the need for attention, also favoring concentration.

Psychosocial stimulation served as a beneficial reinforcer for child development. Good psychosocial stimulation has a positive impact on the social development particularly for children with ASD. These study used a Quasi Experiment with Non-equivalent Control Group Design. The research analysis of the Mann Whitney test showed a significance of Sig (p) = 0.034. α = 5% = 0.05, p <α means there are differences in social development of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the treatment group with the control group,  it means that there is a difference after the treatment of giving psychosocial stimulation by the family. The analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon test, it was found that Sig (p) = 0.003. α = 5% = 0.05, p <α, it means that there is an effect of giving psychosocial stimulation by the family on the social development of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Autism Spectrum Disorders are increasingly known in developing countries like Bangladesh. The children with autism exhibit significant deficits in social communication, including delayed language development and imitation skills. This disorder is different from other disorders and its characteristics and functions are also different. Families having children with autism spectrum disorder play important role in their socialization and face many challenges as the disorder is associated with disruptive antisocial behavior. The main objective of this research is to know the role of family in socializing autistic children. This research was conducted though survey method by using a semi-structured questionnaire. The data of this study was collected from 78 parents having children with autism spectrum disorder. In our country autism newly introduced and research on autism especially role of the family of the autistic children in socialization are very few. So, this study discusses the role of family in socializing autistic children.

The aim of this study is to determine the opinions of the mothers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which can interact with their children. Phenomenology design, a qualitative research model was used in the study. Research data were collected by obtaining information regarding demographic aspects and by using a 15-item semi-structured interview form designed to identify views of mothers with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) on their communication styles with their children. 9 mothers with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) between the ages of 4-6 participated in the study.  The data were analyzed using the content analysis method. Findings of this study showed that children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) expressed gestures, facial expressions, pointing and verbally but they have difficulty expressing themselves. Additionally found that ıf they aren’t express themselves, exhibit problem behaviors. Mothers who have children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), prefer to verbal communication but they have difficulty. Also they organized their communicative behaviors according to the characteristics of their children. The data obtained from the survey results were discussed based on the literature.Extended English abstract is in the end of PDF (TURKISH) file. ÖzetBu araştırmanın amacı, annelerin Otizm Spektrum Bozukluğu (OSB) olan çocukları ile kurdukları iletişim biçimlerine ilişkin görüşlerini belirlemektir. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden olgubilim desenine yer verilmiştir. Araştırma verileri; demografik bilgiler ve annelerin Otizm Spektrum Bozukluğu (OSB) olan çocukları ile iletişim biçimlerine ilişkin görüşlerini belirlemeye yönelik 15 sorudan oluşan yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Elde edilen veriler içerik analizi ile analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu, 4-6 yaş arasında Otizm Spektrum Bozukluğu (OSB) olan çocuğa sahip 9 anne oluşturmaktadır.  Araştırma sonucunda, Otizm Spektrum Bozukluğu (OSB) olan çocukların kendilerini jest, mimik ve sözel olarak ifade ettikleri ve kendilerini ifade ederken zorlandıkları, ifade edemedikleri durumlarda çeşitli problem davranışlar sergiledikleri bulgulanmıştır. Annelerin ise Otizm Spektrum Bozukluğu (OSB) olan çocukları ile iletişim kurarken sözel ifadeler tercih ettikleri, çocukları ile iletişim kurarken çeşitli güçlükler yaşadıkları, kendi iletişimsel davranışlarını çocuklarının özelliklerine göre düzenledikleri ve çoğunlukla ev ortamında iletişim kurmayı tercih ettikleri bulgulanmıştır.
