Historic settlements adapting to local climate and geographical environment contain rich and precious scientific design concepts, which should be investigated extensively. This paper is a study on the sustainable design and planning experiences of Chinese historic settlements. In this study, the thermal environment of Jin-Jiang-Li village with ‘comb-like’ layout in the southern China was simulated to evaluate the interactions between layout, landscape design, and ambient environment. The study has illustrated that the layout as well as the presence of water and vegetation would have an obvious-reducing effect and could play a very important role in improving the microclimate of historic settlements. The findings of our study have an essential practical significance for creating modern sustainable human environments and adapting to the changing modern climate.

To ensure passengers can have a comfortable thermal environment in the subway waiting room is one of the main targets in subway environment control. By using the CFD software, this paper takes an island platform with double-layer of Shenyang as the object to simulate the thermal environment of platform screen door and ventilation in the open system, then detailed analysis on the variation of the temperature field, airflow velocity field in the typical position. The results indicated that average temperature of no-PSD system platform is 2.5 ~3 °C higher than that of PSD system, standing room is 1.5 °C higher than that of PSD system , but these also meet the requirement of the standards of the environmental control and passengers’ thermal comfort. Meanwhile, through the comparative analysis to the energy consumption of the two systems, we find ventilating condition has superior to PSD system in energy saving, and it is more suitable for the local climate in the northeast.

With the development of the economy in China, the tourism industry has become a form of daily entertainment for citizens. Commercial pedestrianized blocks have been designed as recreational centers for tourists, serving as outdoor public space and scenic spots. The use of these regions is directly determined by the outdoor thermal environment. So far, few studies have been conducted on tourists’ thermal experience in commercial pedestrianized blocks, especially in the hot and humid region of southern China. Using field measurement and numerical simulation of a commercial pedestrianized block in Fo Shan, China, to research tourists’ thermal experience under different conditions, the final results of this study could help to select the most suitable time for tourist travel and help local managers to improve the thermal environment.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate undergraduate industrial design students’ perception of sustainable design concepts and how their conceptualization evolves as a function of their attendance to a specific sustainable design studio (SDS) course. Design/methodology/approach Two groups of students participated in the study. Students who did not attend to SDS were in the control group, whereas students who attended SDS were in the experimental group. In total, 22 concepts, which have been highlighted in literature and the SDS course, were selected as keywords. Participants were asked to provide relatedness scores of these keywords before and after they attended the course. The data were analyzed using multidimensional scaling and pathfinder (PF) networks. Findings Results indicate that the SDS caused a change in the conceptualization of sustainable design concepts parallel to the course outcomes and the literature. Some concepts were highlighted as conveyors that guide students to conceptualize sustainable development and design. Research limitations/implications This study is considered a case study focusing on declarative knowledge, and owing to the low number of participants, the results should be carefully interpreted. Practical implications The findings may support design educators to enhance their courses and promote deeper debates on teaching sustainable design. Originality/value Two specific dimensions were found from the analysis of multidimensional scaling, and several conveyor concepts were identified from PF networks. Allocating proposed dimensions and concepts into a course may have the potentials to enhance students’ perception of sustainability concepts.

The development of computer technology has reshaped the form and philosophy of landscape design, as evidenced by the growing importance of computer-aided design (CAD) in this area. This paper attempts to apply 3D visualization in the teaching of landscape design. For this purpose, three CAD teaching tools were selected, namely, AutoCAD, 3D Max and SketchUp, and subjected to theoretical analysis and teaching practice. The research results show that AutoCAD can guide the landscape design teaching from conception to positioning, 3D Max can upgrade the teaching form from 2D to 3D in the later phase, and SketchUp sup-ports the entire process of landscape design. In addition, the author summarized the specific process of supporting landscape design teaching with SketchUp. This research enriches the results on the application of CAD in landscape design teaching and has certain theoretical and practical significance.

With the rapid development of Chinese economy, China has entered industrialization metaphase, heavy industry stage. The high consumption, high pollution and poor efficiency economic growth mode which the pattern of extensive growth has taken a leading position has never changed while industrial products are improving human living quality and offering convenient for humans. It has become a chief culprit in resources waste and environmental disruption. Therefore, advocating sustainable design in field of design of industrial products and taking energy saving and emission reduction concept as the key point of sustainable design will has distinctly important practical significance for the sustainable development of the whole society.
