The goal of the Mid-career Professional Group of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society is to support the development and mentoring of mid-career professionals. One opportunity for which early mid-career professionals lack knowledge is the sabbatical. Following a designated number of years of consecutive service, a sabbatical can provide a time for personal and professional development through an approved leave of absence. While sabbaticals provide time for deep consideration of a particular topic and/or to reconsider one’s career options, few mid-career professionals are prepared to plan and to execute a sabbatical period. This panel will introduce the benefits of a sabbatical and will highlight options and strategies for those who are considering the sabbatical opportunity.

This paper offers an analysis of the strategic EU's framework in the planinning of sustainable industrial development and possibilities for harmonisation of Serbia. The aim of this analysis is finding an acceptable formulation of new approaches to sustainable industrial planning in relation to the European strategic framework based on the Lisabon Summit (agenda), the European Spatial Development Perspective towards sustainable territorial development EU (ESDP) and possibilities of introducing the EU Directive IPPC in industry (Integrated Pollution Prevention Control) and Directive of the EU Parliament and Council on the assessment of the effects of certain plans and programmes on the environment (SEA -strategic environmental assessment). This paper deals with various strategic frameworks, approaches and aims of sustainable industrial development in the EU and proposes its harmonisation for Serbia in the period of transition towards market economy. The paper also takes into account the advantages and disadvantages of the application of this approach of sustainable industrial planning during the transition in Serbia, and proposes the formulation of new industrial policies that would contain combined elements of market and environmental mechanisms and the way of implementing (standards, indicators, set of various policies, instruments, measures,etc.). Different proposals are offered for strategic planning of territorial industrial development

Sport management seems like a glamorous career path. Many students believe if they do well in classes and graduate, they will be the next general manager of the New York Yankees or athletic director of a major Division I intercollegiate athletic department. While sport management professors hope that every student has the potential to succeed, it is incumbent upon faculty members and students to have a realistic expectation of their career options and a true understanding of what it takes to be successful. This article leads a fictitious student and faculty member through four years of the student’s educational adventure in sport management with special attention being given to what students can undertake to best prepare them for the future and improve their chances of landing the right job. This case study demonstrates the value of a comprehensive sport management education and what students can do to set themselves apart from their competition in the job market.

The article presents the arguments concerning tenure in academic institutions. Proponents of tenure argue that it protects professors from social sanctions such as criticism by political or religious powers outside campus that may disagree with the professor’s research findings and thus might pressure the institution to fire him or her. Opponents of tenure argue that the security that comes with tenure allows professors to become incompetent and slothful. After assessing the advantages and disadvantages of tenure, this article concludes that tenure could be an incentive attracting competent faculty members and allowing them to embark on long-term, risky research projects.

Software organizations need to increase their productivity to stay competitive. Although there is a lot of research on productivity in software development, software organizations still do not know what are the most significant productivity factors in which they should invest. This paper presents a Tertiary Literature Review (TLR) that aims to identify and analyze Systematic Literature Reviews (SLR) on the influence factors of software productivity reported in the scientific literature. We extracted and classified the influence factors into organizational factors (organizational-dependent factors) and human factors (people-dependent factors). The relevance of the factors was extracted according to the amount of references found in the secondary studies. Using this information, software organizations can improve the productivity of their projects by evaluating the influence factors that best fit their context.

After pointing out some of the practical problems associated with the identification of the neurotic worker in a workforce, two methods of identification which comply with the requirements of being both scientific and accurate, i.e. (1) clinical identification and (2) psychometric identification are discussed. The strengths and shortcomings of clinical identification, when the findings are required for industrial research purposes are contrasted with certain advantages and disadvantages of psychometric identification.
