The chemical constituents of the essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation of the leaves of Eugenia triquetra O. Berg, collected in Táchira State, Venezuela, were identified by GC-MS analysis. Twenty-six components, which made up 88.5% of the oil, were identified. The major constituents were linalool (17.5%), limonene (16.9%), α-pinene (11.6%), β-pinene (8.7%), and p-cymene (3.7%). The essential oil was tested against third-instar larvae of Aedes aegypti, showing a LC50 value of 64.8 ± 5.6 ppm.

The chemical constituents of the essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation from the leaves of Calycolpus moritzianus (O. Berg) Burret, syn Psidium caudatum Mc Vaught, collected in November 2006 in Mérida State, Venezuela, were identified by GC-MS analysis. Thirty components (91.1% of the sample) were identified, of which the seven major ones were β-caryophyllene (21.9%), α-pinene (10.9%), viridiflorol (9.7%), β-selinene (6.1%), α-copaene (6.3%), α-selinene (5.3%) and γ-eudesmol (5.1%). The oil was found to have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC (6538) and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC (29212), with MIC values of 60 μg/mL and 180 μg/mL, respectively.

The essential oils from the needles and branch of the Abies delaveyi subsp. fansipanensis was collected in Hoang Lien Natural Park, Lao Cai province and was obtained by steam distilation and the yields of essential oils were 0.27% and 0.08% from air-dry material. By the using GC/MS analysis, there are 44 and 52 constituents from needles and branch were identified and accounting 97.75% and 96.86% essential oil. The main constituents of needles essential oil were α-pinene (22.28%), β-phellandrene (17.80%), β-pinene (7.87%), α-cadinol (6.53%), myrcene (4.35%), δ-cadinene (4.39%). The main constituents of branchs essential oil were β-phellandrene (18.0%), α-pinene (10.95%), myrcene (10.76%), β-pinene (6.71%), abienol (6.71%). α-cadinol (3.31%). This is the first study on the chemical constituents of the essential oils from the needles and branchs of Abies delaveyi subsp. fansipanensis in Vietnam.

ABSTRACTThis study evaluated the larvicidal activity of O. majorana essential oil, identified the chemical composition, evaluated the antimicrobial, cytotoxic and antioxidant potential. The larvicidal activity was evaluated against larvae of the third stage of Aedes aegypti, whereas the chemical composition was identified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometer, the antimicrobial activity was carried out against the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus auereus, the antioxidant activity was evaluated from of 2.2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazila sequestration and Artemia salina cytotoxicity. Regarding to the results, the larvicidal activity showed that O. majorana essential oil caused high mortality in A. aegypti larvae. In the chromatographic analysis, the main component found in O. majorana essential oil was pulegone (57.05%), followed by the other components verbenone (16.92%), trans-p-menthan-2-one (8.57%), iso-menthone (5.58%), piperitone (2.83%), 3-octanol (2.35%) and isopulegol (1.47%). The antimicrobial activity showed that E. coli and P. aeruginosa bacteria were more sensitive to oil than S. aureus, which was resistant at all concentrations. Essential oil did not present antioxidant activity, but it has high cytotoxic activity against A. salina.

The essential oil from the leaves of the Amentotaxus yunnanensis collected in Hoang Su Phi, Ha Giang province was obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus and the yield of the essential oil was 0.01% from air-dry material. By using GC/MS analysis 50 constituents were identified, accounting for 88.96% of the essential oil. The main constituents were α-pinene (21.91%), kaur-16-ene (13.03%), α-calacorene (9.42%), δ-cadinene (6.23%) and β-caryophyllene (4.9%). This is the first study on the chemical constituents of essential oils from the leaves of Amentotaxus yunnanensis in Vietnam. The control of Aedes aegypti, which transmits several arboviruses of importance to public health, has as strategies the use of synthetic insecticides, integrated with environmental control. Its control is mainly directed to the larvae and adult phases. The egg phase is difficult to control, as it has great resistance to environmental conditions. The objective of this work was to evaluate the ovicidal potential of the essential oil obtained from the leaves of Croton argyrophyllus, on Aedes aegypti, as well as to determine the moisture content, the yield, and its chemical composition. The eggs were exposed to the aqueous solution of the essential oil in 10% Tween 80, in the concentration of 12 mg mL-1, for a period of 15, 30, 60, and 120 minutes. Subsequently, the eggs were washed and, after 180 hours of observation, the feed was added. The analysis of the chemical composition of the essential oil was performed by Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry. It was found that up to 180 hours of observation, the highest percentage of larval hatching occurred in eggs exposed to essential oil for 15 min (30%) and the lowest percentage in eggs exposed for 120 min ( less than 10%). After 180 hours, there was an increase in hatching in all treatments. The moisture content was 58.69%, the oil yield was 0.35%, and the main chemical constituents found were bicyclogermacrene and b-cariophylene. It was observed that the essential oil of Croton argyrophyllus, at the concentration evaluated, affects the hatching of Aedes aegypti larvae only in the absence of food.

The chemical constituents of essential oils extracted by hydrodistillation from Piper klotzschianum, P. hispidum, and P. arboreum, collected from the remaining Atlantic forest in Sergipe State, were characterized and submitted to cytotoxic and larvicidal activity assays. The major constituents identified (stems, fresh, and dried leaves) were ( E)-caryophyllene (16.8%) and bicyclogermacrene (21.6%). Germacrene D (22.8%) was identified only in P. klotzschianum and P. hispidum. A high percentage of β-pinene (27.2%) and α-pinene (7.2%) were present in P. klotzschianum stems and δ-3-carene in the fresh and dried leaves of P. hispidum (17.4% and 19.1%, respectively). Piper klotzschianum showed the best cytotoxic activity, inhibiting human hepatocellular carcinoma (27.3 µg/mL), human promyelocytic leukemia (33.8 µg/mL), and murine melanoma (37.9 µg/mL) cell lines. Larvicidal activity was also tested and the essential oil from the dried leaves of P. klotzschianum was the most potent against Aedes aegypti larvae, with an LC50 value of 122.4 µg/mL.

The objective of this work was to collect information on the chemical constituents that demonstrate the larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti, as well as the antioxidant, microbiological, and cytotoxicity potential of the essential oil of Pogostemon cablin leaves. The chemical characterization was performed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The larvicidal activity was performed according to the protocol of the World Health Organization. The antioxidant activity was evaluated through the sequestering capacity of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazine (DPPH). As for the microbiological evaluation, the microdilution technique was used, according to the protocol of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. The cytotoxic activity was evaluated against the larvae of Artemia salina. The species P. cablin presented the following compounds: Patchouli alcohol (33.25%), Seyshellene (6.12%), α-bulnesene (4.11%), Pogostol (6.33%), and Norpatchoulenol (5.72%), which was in synergy with the other substances may significantly potentiate the larvicidal action of the species with the LC50 of 28.43 μg·mL−1. There was no antioxidant activity, however, it presented antimicrobial activity against all bacteria tested with Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of 62.5 μg·mL−1. The species demonstrated significant toxic action with LC50 of 24.25 μg·mL−1. Therefore, the P. cablin species showed significant larvicidal potential, antimicrobial activity, the absence of antioxidant action, and high toxicity.

The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of the leaves, stems, and shoots of Tephrosia toxicaria Pers (Papilionaceae) were analyzed using GC and GC/MS. Germacrene D was the major component (20.7-33.3 %) of the oils of leaves and shoots, whereas spathulenol was the main constituent (42.3%) of the stem oil. The essential oils from the leaves and stems, when tested for activity against mosquito larvae (Aedes aegypti), gave LC 50 values of 81.3 ± 2.9 and 63.1 ± 1.0 ppm, respectively.
