Three Inula species, I. viscosa, I. helenium ssp. turcoracemosa and I. montbretiana, collected from different locations of Anatolia were investigated for their antioxidant and antimicrobial potential, and their total phenolic content and phenolic composition. Antioxidant activities of various extracts of the plant parts were measured using DPPH radical scavenging and ABTS assays. Antimicrobial potential of methanol extracts of the plant parts was determined by the agar dilution method against Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis. All the extracts were more active against Gram-positive bacteria and yeasts than Gram-negative bacteria. The extracts exhibited antioxidant and antimicrobial activities in different concentrations. Total phenolic concentration of the extracts was estimated with Folin-Ciocalteu reagent using gallic acid as standard. The total phenolic content varied widely in different parts of the three tested Inula species, ranging from 21.1 ± 0.8 to 190.9 ± 6.1 mg GAE/g extract. Phenolic components, such as chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, rutin, myricetin, quercetin, luteolin and kaempferol were quantified by HPLC-DAD in the methanol extracts of the Inula species. It was obvious that the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the plants were due to the phenolics.

The aim of this work was to determine the total phenolic content (TPC) and the antioxidant activity of methanol extracts of Hericium erinaceus, Hericium americanum and Hericium coralloides, including free radical scavenging method (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and radical cation scavenging method (ABTS). Hericium spp exhibited moderate to high antioxidant activity. The highest TPC (3.27 ±0.01 mg GAE g–1) and antioxidant activity values (17.0 ±0.68 mmol TE g‒1 in FRAP; EC50 = 4.12 ±0.12 mg mL‒1 in DPPH•; EC50 = 2.83 ± 0.10 mg mL‒1 in ABTS•+) were found for methanol extracts of H. coralloides. The TPC and antioxidant activity of H. erinaceus isolates varied from strain to strain. H. americanum possessed considerably lower total phenolic content (2.31 ±0.01 mg GAE g‒1) and antioxidant activity (10.5 ±0.59 mmol TE g‒1 in FRAP; EC50 = 7.82 ±0.09 mg mL‒1 in DPPH•; EC50 = 6.36 ± 0.12 mg mL‒1 in ABTS•+) than H. coralloides and H. erinaceus. A high correlation was determined between TPC and ABTS•+ (r2 = 0.855), DPPH• (r2 = 0.969) and FRAP (r2 = 0.942). According to results obtained in the present study, Hericium spp., especially H. coralloides and some of H. erinaceus isolates, might be promising natural source of antioxidants for food and pharmaceutical industry.

The present study investigated the total content of phenolic compounds, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of water extracts oat (Avena sativa) and basil (Ocimum basilicum), medicinal plants. The Folin-ciocalteu reagent assay was used to estimate the total phenolic content of plants extract. The antioxidant capacity of the plants extract was tested by ferric reducing/antioxidant power Assay (FRAP) and ferric reducing scavenging activity using DPPH method, and the antimicrobial activity was measured against [Staphylococcus epidermidis; Staphylococcus aureus; Proteus spp.; Klebsiella spp.; Escherichia coli; Candida albicans] as tester strains. The total phenolic content of Avena sativa and Ocimum basilicum extracts revealed that the mixture of plants showed higher content. The mixture of Avena sativa and Ocimum basilicum extracts showed the highest antioxidant capacity followed by Avena sativa extract and Ocimum basilicum extract with FRAP and DPPH assay. However, mixture of Avena sativa and Ocimum basilicum extracts exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity when compared to the other extracts. Thus the study revealed that the consumption of mixture herbs may enhance the immune power of our body against diseases due to free radicals.

Discovery of new therapeutic agents from nature, especially plants is one of the promising approaches for treatment of various diseases. In traditional medicine Scurrula ferruginea is applied to treat some disorders. To the best of our knowledge, there are no investigations on antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial activities of S.ferruginea in Malaysia. The present study was conducted to determine total phenolic content, Fe2+ chelating activity, antioxidative and antimicrobial potential of flowers, leaves and stems of S.ferruginea extracts. Antioxidant capacity, and total phenolic content of extracts were evaluated using DPPH free radical scavenging and Folin-Ciocalteu assays. Antibacterial properties were evaluated by disc diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration methods. Results indicated the highest total phenolic content for stem extract (309.069). All S. ferruginea extracts exhibited antioxidant activity in a dose dependent manner. Stem extract showed capacity to scavenge free radicals and it was also found to chelate Fe2+ better than others. All extracts presented moderate inhibition ability against selected bacteria. The most significant values of MIC and MBC were belonged to the stem extract. These findings suggest that acetone extracts of S. ferruginea, particularly stem extract, are potentially sources of antioxidant compounds.

<em>Momordica balsamina </em>is considered as a miracle herb used in African traditional medicine due to its tremendous medicinal and nutritional properties. In this present study we evaluated the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the methanol extract of <em>Momordica balsamina </em>(MEMB). Phytochemical screening followed by thin layer chromatography and spectrophotometrydone to measure the radical scavenging activity of 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Total phenolic content and total antioxidant activity of MEMB was determined. Zones of inhibition, minimum inhibitory (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) were measured by agar diffusion and liquid broth dilution assays to assess the antimicrobial activities of MEMB. Phytochemicals isolated were flavonoids, tannins, coumarins, terpenoids and phenols. The antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activity of MEMB can be attributed to the total phenolic content and other bioactive phytochemicals.MEMB showed antimicrobicidal activity more against Gram positive than Gram negative organisms. <em>S.agalactiae,S.aureus</em> (ATCC 25923) and <em>L.monocytogenes</em> were more susceptible than <em>Proteus mirabilis</em>, <em>E.coli, K.pneumoniae, P.aeruginosa or S. typhimurium. </em>MEMB also showed antifungal activity against <em>C.albicans</em> species though at a higher concentration[MIC - 0.938mg/ml and MBC-1.875mg/ml]. MEMB can therefore be considered as a potential medication in the management of infectious diseases.

The root bark of Osyris lanceolata was screened for its antioxidant potential using three variations of the DPPH radical scavenging method viz a TLC-autographic assay, a semi-quantitative TLC assay, and a spectrophotometric assay. The total phenolic content was evaluated as gallic acid equivalents (GAE) using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The powdered root bark was extracted sequentially with n-hexane, chloroform, methanol and 90% methanol/water. A separate supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of the root bark was also carried out. The radical scavenging ability, as measured by IC50 values, was found to be 48.4 ± 0.4 and 49.5 ± 1.9 μg/mL for the 90% methanol/water and methanol extracts respectively, while those of the chloroform, n-hexane, and SFE extracts were found to be < 250 μg/mL. Under the same conditions, the values for the standards, ascorbic acid and gallic acid, were found to be 38.70 ± 0.08 and 2.86 ± 0.01 μg/mL respectively. The radical scavenging power of the five extracts correlated positively with the total phenolic content and was ranked in the following decreasing order: 90% methanol/water > methanol > chloroform > SFE > n-hexane with total phenolic contents of 290.2 ± 3.3, 271.0 ± 3.7, 74.4 ± 0.8, 62.5 ± 0.4 and 49.5 ± 1.9 mg GAE/g of dry extract, respectively. The 90% methanol/water and methanol extracts showed several components with high antioxidant activity displaying fast kinetics in both TLC assays, while the chloroform, SFE, and n-hexane extracts exhibited slow kinetics antioxidant activity.

The current investigation is intended to evaluate the content of phytochemical constituents and antioxidant potential of hydroalcoholic extracts of stem and root of Grewia serrulata DC (HAESGS & HAERGS) and leaf and bark of Grewia Nervosa (Lour.) panigrahi (HAELGN & HAEBGN). Initially, all the extracts at different concentrations were estimated for their total phenolic content and total flavonoid content. The study was further extended for their antioxidant potential evaluation using various in vitro methods such as 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical scavenging assays. The total phenolic content (mg gallic acid equivalent per gram of extract) was high in HAELGN (170.82±0.19) and HAERGS (123.00±0.48) than HAESGS (111.2±0.26) and HAEBGN (119.60±0.23). The total flavonoid content (mg quercetin equivalent per gram) is greater in HAERGS (71.24±0.50) and HAESGS (65.68±0.27) than HAELGN (55.82±0.35) and HAEBGN (62.38±0.45). The IC50 values (µg/ml) of different plant extracts inferred that DPPH radical scavenging activity is greater in HAELGN (42.91±0.88) and HAEBGN (53.87±0.35) than HAESGS (126.73±1.20) and HAERGS (88.87±1.25). However, hydroxyl and superoxide radical scavenging activity is more in HAERGS (135.41±1.19 & 88.00±1.42) and HAELGN (172.28±1.91 & 108.163±1.09) than HAESGS (237.3±1.65 & 110.074±0.87) and HAEBGN (204.7±1.04 & 125.54±1.07). The results of present comprehensive analysis demonstrated that both the plants Grewia serrulata DC and Grewia Nervosa (Lour.) panigrahi possess high phenolic, flavonoid contents and potential antioxidant activity, and could be used as a valid source of natural antioxidants and might be utilized for pharmacological screening of various therapeutic activities.
