Sideritis caesarea H. Duman, Aytaç & Başer of the Lamiaceae is an Anatolian endemic species, and is mainly used as herbal tea and folk medicine. This present study aimed to determine and compare the chemical compositions of the volatile components of S. caesarea specimens collected from different localities in Kayseri province, Turkey: Sariz town (samples A and B), Pınarbaşı-Kaynar (sample C) and Pınarbaşı-Şirvan Mountain (sample D), respectively. Initially, the essential oils of the aerial parts were obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed both by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID), gas chromatography/mass spectrometer (GC/MS), simultaneously. Major volatile components of samples A and D were characterized as hexadecanoic acid (19.7 and 20.5%), caryophyllene oxide (6.7 and 20.2%), β-caryophyllene (6.5 and 12.6%), respectively. In sample B, hexadecanoic acid (14.6%), β-caryophyllene (11.5%) and caryophyllene oxide (8.3%) were detected as the major components. Whereas caryophyllene oxide (13.7%), hexadecanoic acid (8.5%) and spathulenol (6.1%) were the main components of the essential oil of sample C. Besides the chemical profiling, in vitro antimicrobial effects of samples were evaluated against a panel of six pathogenic microorganisms. Inhibition zones of the tested samples varied against bacteria with low to moderate activity, where no susceptibility against Candida albicans was observed.

Abstract Lavandula stoechas subsp. stoechas and Mentha spicata subsp. spicata are used for the treatment of sinusitis in Turkish folk medicine. The components of essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation were determined by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID), gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and thin layer chromatography (TLC). Major components of L. stoechas and M. spicata oils were determined as camphor (46.7%) and carvone (60.6%), respectively. The antibacterial activity of essential oils and their main components were tested against the common selected sinusitis pathogens Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa using in vitro agar diffusion, microdilution, and vapor diffusion methods. As a result, the tested plant materials, which are locally and natively used against sinusitis, were relatively mild antibacterial (in vitro MICs 310–1250 μg/mL) in action. To use essential oils and their components safely in sinusitis therapy, further detailed in vivo experiments are needed to support their efficacy.

The volatile components of Algerian Daucus aureus Desf. were investigated using a combination of analytical techniques. Analyses of essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from the aerial parts and roots of the plant were performed using capillary GC/RI and GC/MS analysis. Seventy-one compounds were identified, constituting 90.2–96.0% of the total essential oils,. The main components from the aerial parts of the plants were germacrene D (11.3–67.2%), followed by caryophyllene oxide (0.9–9.5%), spathulenol (0.6–8.4%), ( Z)-α-santalol (1.4–6.5%), viridiflorol (0.9–5.8%), cadin-4-en-7-ol (1.5–5.6%), and τ-cadinol (1.2–5.2%). The main components of the essential oils obtained from the roots of the plant were ( Z)-α-santalol (14.1%), caryophyllene oxide (10.6%), spathulenol (9.8%), nonadecane (6.8%), and tetradecanoic acid (5.2%). The intraspecies variations of the chemical compositions of the essential oils from the aerial parts of D. aureus from 14 Algerian sample locations were investigated using statistical analysis. Essential oil samples were clustered into two groups according to their chemical compositions. This chemical variability could be attributed to growing conditions and environmental factors. The essential oils exhibited an interesting antimicrobial effect against the microorganisms tested, with MIC values in the range of 0.125–4.6 mg/mL. It is suggested that the essential oils from D. aureus may be a new potential source of natural antimicrobial compounds that could be applied in the pharmaceutical and food industries.

In the present study the chemical compositions of the essential oils from aerial parts of Centaurea davidovii Urum. and C. parilica Stoj. & Stef., both endemic to Bulgaria, were evaluated by GC and GC-MS. The main components of C. davidovii were β-eudesmol (13.9%), spathulenol (13.3%), caryophyllene oxide (10.1%) and ( Z)-phytol (5.4%). The main components of C parilica were hexadecanoic acid (39.2%), ( Z, Z)-9,12-octadecadienoic acid (11.9%), caryophyllene oxide (6.8%) and spathulenol (6.6%). In order to compare the essential oils composition of these taxa and of related species a PCA analysis was carried out.

Croton ferrugineus Kunth is an endemic species of Ecuador used in traditional medicine both for wound healing and as an antiseptic. In this study, fresh Croton ferrugineus leaves were collected and subjected to hydrodistillation for extraction of the essential oil. The chemical composition of the essential oil was determined by gas chromatography equipped with a flame ionization detector and gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer using a non-polar and a polar chromatographic column. The antibacterial activity was assayed against three Gram-positive bacteria, one Gram-negative bacterium and one dermatophyte fungus. The radical scavenging properties of the essential oil was evaluated by means of DPPH and ABTS assays. The chemical analysis allowed us to identify thirty-five compounds representing more than 99.95% of the total composition. Aliphatic sesquiterpene hydrocarbon trans-caryophyllene was the main constituent with 20.47 ± 1.25%. Other main compounds were myrcene (11.47 ± 1.56%), β-phellandrene (10.55 ± 0.02%), germacrene D (7.60 ± 0.60%), and α-humulene (5.49 ± 0.38%). The essential oil from Croton ferrugineus presented moderate activity against Candida albicans (ATCC 10231) with an MIC of 1000 μg/mL, a scavenging capacity SC50 of 901 ± 20 µg/mL with the ABTS method, and very strong antiglucosidase activity with an IC50 of 146 ± 20 µg/mL.

The chemical compositions of the essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of three Piper plants grown in Vietnam are reported. The analysis was achieved by means of gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The main constituents of the leaf oil of Piper majusculum Blume were β-caryophyllene (20.7%), germacrene D (18.6%) and β-elemene (11.3%). The quantitatively significant compounds of the volatile oils of P. harmandii C. DC were sabinene (leaves, 14.5%; stems, 16.2%), benzyl benzoate (leaves, 20.0%; stems, 29.40%) and benzyl salicylate (leaves, 14.1%; stems, 24.3%). Also, α-cadinol (17.0%) was identified in large proportion in the leaf oil. However, sabinene (leaves, 17.9%; stems, 13.5%), benzyl benzoate (leaves, 20.5%; stems, 32.5%) and β-eudesmol (leaves, 13.8%; stems, 8.4%) were the main constituents of P. brevicaule C. DC. This is the first report on the volatile constituents of both P. harmandii and P. brevicaule.

Essential oil of Origanum species is well known for antimicrobial activity, but only a few have been evaluated in narrow spectrum antiprotozoal assays. Herein, we assessed the antiprotozoal potential of Turkish Origanum onites L. oil and its major constituents against a panel of parasitic protozoa. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation from the dried herbal parts of O. onites and analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) and Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The in vitro activity of the oil and its major components were evaluated against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, T. cruzi, Leishmania donovani, and Plasmodium falciparum. The main component of the oil was identified as carvacrol (70.6%), followed by linalool (9.7%), p-cymene (7%), γ-terpinene (2.1%), and thymol (1.8%). The oil showed significant in vitro activity against T. b. rhodesiense (IC50 180 ng/mL), and moderate antileishmanial and antiplasmodial effects, without toxicity to mammalian cells. Carvacrol, thymol, and 10 additional abundant oil constituents were tested against the same panel; carvacrol and thymol retained the oil’s in vitro antiparasitic potency. In the T. b. brucei mouse model, thymol, but not carvacrol, extended the mean survival of animals. This study indicates the potential of the essential oil of O. onites and its constituents in the treatment of protozoal infections.

The results of the study of the composition of volatile compounds of rennet cheeses are presented. Sample preparation was performed using Supelco’s solid-phase microextractor, including a special fiber material coated with a layer of divinylbenzene-carboxene-polydimethylsiloxane «DVB / Carboxen / PDMS StableFlesh ™». Using gas chromatography with mass-selective detection, about 400 aroma-forming components were detected, among which 39 compounds were identified, which form the basis of the flavor profile of cheeses. The main flavor descriptors for all cheeses are: propionic, butyric, and caproic acids, acetoin, methyl amyl ketone, 2-nonanone, and limonene. It has been established that the profile of volatile components for cheeses various ripening periods, has significant differences. Thus, for semi-hard cheeses made using propionic acid microorganisms, the most characteristic components are acids — propionic and butyric, as well as compounds of the terpene series o-cymene and β-pinene. For semi-hard cheeses of the Dutch group (formed from the layer), with maturities from 20 days to 3 months, the terpene compounds and esters are the most significant, whereas for superhard cheeses with a maturity of more than a year, the main components affecting the aromatic profile are butyric and caproic acids, 2-heptanone and limonene. Semi-hard and hard cheeses with ripening periods from 3 to 6 months are characterized by a high content of caproic and butyric acids, as well as by the presence of such aromatic substances as limonene and acetic acid ethyl acetate (hexyl acetate). Semi-hard cheeses, which are molded in bulk, with maturities from 10 days to 3 months contain acetoin, caproic acid, as well as significant quantities of the same limonene and hexylacetate.

American skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora L.) has long been used as a medicine by North American Indian tribes. A monograph of Scutellariae lateriflorae herba was included in the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia in 2009. This raw material is very popular in North America because of its sedative action. It is also highly valued in Australia, while in Europe, it has been widely used until now in the United Kingdom. The main components of the herb of this plant species include flavonoids specific for the Scutellaria genus, mostly baicalein, baicalin, wogonin, scutellarin. They are accompanied by other groups of compounds: diterpenoids – neoclerodan derivatives, γ-aminobutyric acid, melatonin, serotonin, catalpol, phenolic acids, phenylpropanoid glycosides (mostly verbascoside) and essential oil. Studies of chemical composition and investigation of medicinal activity of this raw material confirmed its uses known from North American folk medicine. Study results proved most of all a significance of flavonoid compounds present in the raw material for its documented biological activity. The aim of the paper is to review the present knowledge on chemical composition and medicinal significance of this very valuable plant. The research team from the Department of Pharmaceutical Botany JU MC initiated biotechnological studies of this species. Its microshoots successfully grown in vitro produce considerable amounts of specific flavonoids (mostly baicalin and wogonoside) and verbascoside, and in future they can be an alternative rich source of these compounds for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.

Objectives: The present study was aimed to investigate the facile synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using the green gram sprout extract (GGSE) of Vigna radiata L. and also in vitro studies of antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Methods: Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy techniques have been used for the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the phytochemicals present in the green gram seedlings. The antioxidant activity of AgNPs and GGSE was analyzed using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. In vitro antibacterial activity was performed using the agar well diffusion method. Results: The presence of various secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids, alkaloids, amino acids, polyphenol, glycoside, and protein was found in samples. The major chemical compounds of V. radiata were n-hexadecanoic acid, stigmasterol, caffeine, hexadecanoic acid, cholest-5-en-3-ol (3.beta.)-, and cyclopentane. The percentage of DPPH activity was enhanced on increasing the concentration of AgNPs. In vitro antibacterial effect of the diverse concentrations of AgNPs was investigated against each Gram-negative (Klebsiella aerogenes, and Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Bacillus substilis and Staphylococcus aureus) bacterial strains. Conclusion: The result suggests that biosynthesized AgNPs have good antibacterial and antioxidant activity and might be a potential for the bioactive components.

Essential oils isolated from needles of Pinus patula by hydrodistillation were analyzed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Thirty-eight compounds were identified, representing 98.3% of the total oil. The oil was rich in monoterpene hydrocarbons (62.4%), particularly α-pinene (35.2%) and β-phellandrene (19.5%). The in vitro antifungal assay showed that P. patula oil significantly inhibited the growth of 9 plant pathogenic fungi. The oil, when tested on Sinapis arvensis, Lolium rigidum, Phalaris canariensis and Trifolium campestre, completely inhibited seed germination and seedling growth of all species. Our preliminary results showed that P. patula essential oil could be valorized for the control of weeds and fungal plant diseases.
