The chemical compositions of the essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of three Piper plants grown in Vietnam are reported. The analysis was achieved by means of gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The main constituents of the leaf oil of Piper majusculum Blume were β-caryophyllene (20.7%), germacrene D (18.6%) and β-elemene (11.3%). The quantitatively significant compounds of the volatile oils of P. harmandii C. DC were sabinene (leaves, 14.5%; stems, 16.2%), benzyl benzoate (leaves, 20.0%; stems, 29.40%) and benzyl salicylate (leaves, 14.1%; stems, 24.3%). Also, α-cadinol (17.0%) was identified in large proportion in the leaf oil. However, sabinene (leaves, 17.9%; stems, 13.5%), benzyl benzoate (leaves, 20.5%; stems, 32.5%) and β-eudesmol (leaves, 13.8%; stems, 8.4%) were the main constituents of P. brevicaule C. DC. This is the first report on the volatile constituents of both P. harmandii and P. brevicaule.

Fresh leaves of Actephila excelsa (Dazl.) Muell. from Vietnam were steam distilled to produce an oil in a yield of 0.15% (v/w). The essential oil was analyzed by a combination of capillary gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The main constituents of the oil were the sesquiterpenes γ-elemene (25.7%) and β-caryophyllene (11.2%). Other significant compounds were methyl salicylate (5.8%), benzyl benzoate (5.2%), ( E, E)-farnesylacetone (4.9%), anisole (4.7%), sabinene (4.1%) and menthone (4.0%). This is the first report on the volatile constituents of this plant.

The chemical composition of the essential oils obtained from the hydrodistillation of different parts of Etlingera yunnanensis (T.L. Wu &S.J. Chen) R.M. Sm. and Hornstedtia sanhan M.F. Newman (Zingiberaceae) grown in Vietnam are reported. The analysis was performed by means of a gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The essential oil of the leaves of E. yunnanensis comprised mainly germacrene D (19.2%), β-pinene (11.6%), and α-amorphene (11.2%), while that of the stems was rich in β-pinene (23.7%), 1,8-cineole (11.0%) and α-pinene (9.6%). The major components of the root oil of E. yunnanensis were β-pinene (31.9%), α-pinene (13.7%) and 1,8-cineole (9.4%). However, α-pinene (25.9%, 36.3% and 14.1% for leaves, stems and roots, respectively), β-pinene (9.7%, 11.8% and 7.2% for leaves, stems and roots, respectively) and limonene (22.1%, 24.6% and 16.2% for leaves, stems and roots, respectively) were the major compounds of H. sanhan. In addition, α-humulene (15.9%) was present in larger amounts in the leaf oil while the root oil contained the largest proportion of methyl chavicol (43.7%).

The present paper reports the volatile compounds identified in the essential oils of Dasymaschalon bachmaensis N.S. Lý, T.H. Lê, T.B. Vương & N.Đ.Đỗ and Phaeanthus vietnamensis Bân (Annonanceae) grown in Vietnam. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation from the leaf, stem and bark of the plants. The combined techniques of gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were used for the analysis of the chemical constituents of the oil samples. The major constituents of the leaf oil of D. bachmaensis were limonene (25.7%), eugenol (11.5%), α-phellandrene (11.3%) and benzyl benzoate (9.0%) while the stem contained benzyl benzoate (35.3%), ( Z)-13-docosenamide (12.4%) and limonene (9.4%) In addition, ( Z)-13-docosenamide (23.2%), limonene (25.3%) and α-phellandrene (11.5%) were present in the bark. However, limonene (31.8%), ( Z)-9-octadecamide (20.2%) and α-phellandrene (13.8%) were the compounds occurring in higher amount in the leaf oil of P. vietnamensis while the bark was dominated by ( Z)-9-octadecamide (57.4%) and benzyl benzoate (15.0%). The volatile constituents of both D. bachmaensis and P. vietnamensis are reported for the first time

Essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of leaves of two Nigerian species were analyzed for their constituents by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The leaf oil of Ficus benjamina L. (Moraceae), collected during the day, contained high contents of α-pinene (13.9%), abietadiene (9.7%), cis-α-bisabolene (8.2%) and germacrene-D-4-ol (8.4%), while the night sample was dominated by germacrene-D-4-ol (31.5%), 1,10-di- epi-cubenol (8.8%) and hexahydrofarnesylacetone (8.3%). This could be a possible indication of differences in emissions of volatiles by F. benjamina during the day and night. The main compounds of Irvingia barteri Hook. f. (Irvingiaceae) were β-caryophyllene (17.0%), (E)-α-ionone (10.0%), geranial (7.6%), (E)-β-ionone (6.6%) and β-gurjunene (5.1%).

Abstract Technical chlordane, a multicomponent organochlorine insecticide, was separated into 26 peaks by temperature-programmed gas chromatography, using a 3% OV-17 column. Peaks were identified by using combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GLC-MS) and, where individual standards were available, by comparing retention times on various columns. Technical chlordane constituents were also investigated by GLC-MS, using a Dexsil 300 column; 19–20 peaks were observed. Quantitation studies indicated differences in the per cent contributions of the constituents, particularly for heptachlor and trans-chlordane, in 2 different technical chlordane reference standards. For the same reference standard higher results were obtained by using 63Ni electron capture detection than by using flame ionization detection. By using a combination of 4 GLC columns to overcome peak overlap, we determined that the 11 known constitutents of technical chlordane constituted approximately 40%.

The hydro-distilled essential oil obtained from the flowering aerial parts of Lepidagathis fasciculata Nees was analyzed by gas chromatography equipped with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). A total of 38 compounds have been identified, representing 91.2% of the total oil. The major constituents were δ-cadinene (14.4 %), γ-curcumene (9.8%), sandaracopimarinal (6.6%), germacrene D-4-ol (6.1%), cembrene (5.0%), β-calacorene (3.6%), ar-curcumene (3.3%), trans–4,10-epoxy-amorphane (3.2%), abietatriene (2.9%), and α-cubebene (2.8%). The oil was rich in sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (43.8%).
