The goal of this paper is to examine the role of participatory action research (PAR) in improving relationships in “natural spaces of encounter” where members of conflicting groups meet and interact. It describes and analyzes a project, “the Academic Puzzle,” that fosters organization-wide change in relations between Jewish and Arab students at a College in Israel. The project consists of 16 programs, all initiatives by College faculty, administrators, or students. Many of these programs, though not all, use PAR methods such as cooperative inquiry, dialogue, action science, action evaluation, and photovoice. The paper focuses on four programs which were explicitly designed as PAR. Furthermore, it illustrates how the Puzzle project is guided by a “self-in-field” approach that helps link these individual initiatives into an “enclave” that offers an alternative to the dominant field in order to transform it.

Action research in lifestyle research is no sinecure. Response to Kromme et al.: ‘Changing together is learning together’, a participatory action research project This is a reply to the contribution entitled: ‘Learning together is changing together: A participatory action research project on the role of the internist in promoting a healthy lifestyle’. Here the authors highlight the complexity of facilitating participatory action research (PAR) in a clinical practice setting and reflect on the first three stages of their research through eight principles that could guide PAR, as described by Van Lieshout et al. (2017). As we developed these principles, we explain the principles of participation, reflexivity, contextuality and transformation in greater detail in relation to the context of this study. The authors made suggestions to change the five-phased model of PAR to get a better grip on the process. The authors rightly highlighted some limitations in the labeling of some phases. However, it is the reflexivity on the multiple perspectives that facilitators encounter and the relationships they engage with during the process, as well as acknowledging the iterative process of PAR, which needs to be embraced and experienced during the entire process of study.

Aceh Tamiang is an area with a majority Muslim population, not even one in Adil Makmur Village, Tenggulun, which is the location for this activity to find other places of worship besides mosques and prayer rooms. However, there is a decline in the quality of reading and writing the Koran in today's young generation compared to previous generations. This is due to the lack of parental attention to the quality of children's reading of the Koran, because they have fully surrendered this role to existing Koranic educational institutions. While in the previous generation, most parents were very disciplined for matters related to religious knowledge, especially reading and writing the Koran. The implementation of this Action Research aims to improve the literacy and writing skills of the young generation of the Koran in Adil Makmur Village, Tenggulun, Aceh Tamiang by empowering STAI As-sunnah students for Tahsin al-Qiraah activities. The method used is Participatory Action Research. By doing 3 stages: Planning-Action-Evaluation. The result of this activity: increased public enthusiasm for the importance of the younger generation having the ability to read and write the Koran in Adil Makmur Village, Tenggulun, Aceh Tamiang. In addition, this activity has also succeeded in making the role of parents as the main guides for children re-enforced

This article discusses two important studies. First, the way the Kalibeber Wonosobo community handles waste. Second, the model of waste management in the Kalibeber Wonosobo group. This research uses a Participatory Action Research approach. This approach involves the Kalibeber community as an object and subject as well as to deal with waste. The results of this study show two important scopes. First, the Kalibeber Wonosobo community has an initiative to deal with waste. The initiative emerged because the community felt the environment was dirty, the river water flow was obstructed, and many sufferers of itching. Second, the waste management model uses decentralization. Waste management is carried out in each sub-area to be able to reuse waste (recycling). This discourse is different from other studies. The most prominent differentiating side is the active role of the community by being able to separate organic and inorganic waste. The community operates independently with a voluntary financing mechanism.Artikel ini membahas dua kajian penting. Pertama, cara masyarakat Kalibeber Wonosobo menangani sampah. Kedua, model pengelolaan sampah kelompok paguyuban peduli sampah Kalibeber Wonosobo.

This paper reflects on our experiences of using participatory action research (PAR) with young people as part of an EU H2020 project exploring the spaces and styles of youth participation in formal, nonformal and informal settings. The paper outlines key tenets of action research and provides a brief review of the literature concerning the use of PAR in youth research. Drawing on three case studies, we provide an honest account of some of the messy realities involved in realising the promise of participatory action research in practice. The central focus is on how the action research played out in practice, the challenges of undertaking PAR within the context of a funded project with predefined deliverables, the power relationships between researchers and young people and how agendas are negotiated in action research. We conclude with some critical reflections on lessons learnt, highlighting the importance of acknowledging the exploratory nature of PAR and the critical role of the researcher as facilitator.

Abstract Background Problems related to care coordination are identified as challenges to the organization of health systems. In order to improve coordination, it is necessary to invest in interventions that promote collaboration between levels of care. The study analyzes factors influencing the implementation of the intervention joint meetings between levels of care, guided by participatory action research to improve clinical coordination from the perspective of actors involved in a public health care network in Brazil. Methods Qualitative descriptive-interpretative study carried out in the health network of a municipality in the northeast of Brazil. Ten interviews were conducted to managers and health professionals, members of local steering committee and focus group with primary care physicians and specialists participating in the intervention. Thematic content analysis was used; it generated categories from theoretical and emerging frameworks. Results The willingness of professionals and management support to participate of the intervention process emerge as fundamental factors. However, they are influenced by factors of the system, such as electoral period and management change and these reflected on the slowdown and instability in implementation process. In the health network, turnover of professionals and low trust between primary and specialized care were evidenced as challenges. However, the proactive role of local steering committee, driven by participatory strategy for development of the intervention, promoted reflections and decisions agreed between professionals and managers. This rebounded on adjustments to strengthen the intervention and improvements on knowledge and collaboration between levels. Conclusions analysis of factors contributes to reflection on changes in the context, adaptation of intervention over time and importance of the role of professionals. Such understanding becomes essential for sustainability and improvement of care coordination. Key messages Knowledge about factors that influence implementation of an intervention guided by participatory action research contributes to the development of strategies aimed at its sustainability. Contextual factors that hamper improvements implementation to coordination of care can be overcome through participatory strategies mobilizing health professionals and managers.
