Case summary In this report we describe the occurrence of intracranial meningioma in two adult cats from the same litter. The location of the meningioma varied: one tumour was at the level of the brainstem, and the other was affecting the temporal and piriform lobes. The cat with the brainstem meningioma was treated with radiotherapy and the littermate had a rostrotentorial craniectomy for tumour removal. Both cats had a histopathological diagnosis of grade I meningioma of a predominantly fibrous subtype. Relevance and novel information Cases of familial meningioma in cats have not previously been described in the veterinary literature. However, familial meningioma is well described in humans and it is possible that cases are underestimated in animals. We discuss the possible genetic background and other causes, as well as challenges we may face in veterinary medicine in identifying these associations.

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is one of the most common congenital vascular abnormalities in the dog. In veterinary medicine, surgical ligation (SL) and transarterial occlusion (TO) are two possible treatments that require general anesthesia. Two 4-month-old dogs were anesthetized for the correction of PDA, one by SL and the other by TO. Two different anesthetic and analgesic protocols were used, and were chosen to avoid potential complications. This case report describes two possible anesthetic approaches for PDA corrective surgery (SL and TO).

The patterns of activity of 33 forelimb muscles during unrestrained overground stepping in eight adult cats were analysed using intramuscular electromyography. Three general patterns were found. Some muscles began activity during the first extension epoch (E1) and ceased near the end of the third extension epoch (E3) and were considered extensors. Others, considered flexors, began activity just prior to the flexion (F) epoch and ceased at or just after the onset of E1. Other muscles showed a biphasic pattern of activation; one period of activity occurring during F, the other during the extension epochs. In all regions of the limb, individual muscles displayed variation in the onset and time course of activity. The results are interpreted in terms of a model of locomotor generation which proposes specific neural output to individual muscles. Muscles of the shoulder region are proposed to act mainly to produce translatory and rotatory movements of the scapula associated with lengthening the step. Muscles of the elbow region and antebrachium are interpreted as playing roles both in producing flexionextension movements and in the absorption of energy. The latter group are considered especially suitable to energy absorption because of their pennate arrangement of muscle fasciculi and their long tendons.

The most distal known gene on Neurospora crassa linkage group VR, his-6, was cloned. A genomic walk resulted in isolation of the telomere at VR. It was obtained from a library in which the endmost nucleotides of the chromosome had not been removed by nuclease treatment before being cloned, and mapping indicates that the entire chromosome end has probably been cloned. Sequences homologous to the terminal 2.5 kilobases of DNA from VR from these Oak Ridge N. crassa strains are found at other sites in the genome. To characterize these sites, I crossed an Oak Ridge-derived his-6 strain with a wild-type strain of different genetic background (Mauriceville) and characterized the hybridization patterns seen in the progeny. It appears that the sequences homologous to the VR terminus are found at genetically different sites in the two parental strains, and no hybridization to the VR telomere from Mauriceville was detected. The other genomic copies identified in the Oak Ridge parent were not telomeres. I suggest that any repeating sequence blocks found immediately adjacent to the VR terminus in Oak Ridge strains must be small and that the repeating element identified in that background may be an N. crassa transposable element integrated near the the chromosome end at VR.

Two rare cases of benign submucosal pharyngo-oesophageal mesenchymoma are presented in this paper. One patient was treated by tumour removal via a combined thoracic and laterocervical approach and the other by resection through a laterocervical approach. The paper discusses the pathology and diagnosis of benign mesenchymomas. The authors suggest that for large tumours located in the pharynx and extending down the oesophagus without adhesion to the oesophageal wall, the laterocervical approach can avoid complications associated with the thoracic approach. The new technique caused less tissue damage and provided a quicker recovery and shorter hospitalization.

Various types of sensory stimuli may influence reflex laryngeal adduction. The recurrent laryngeal nerve responses evoked by single shock and repetitive electrical stimulation of a number of sensory nerves have been neurophysiologically observed in twenty-five adult cats. Stimulation of major cranial afferents produces strong adductor responses. The magnitude of these evoked responses is approached only by stimulation of the splanchnic nerve in the abdomen. On the other hand, comparable stimulation of special sensory and spinal somatic sensory nerves produces rapidly attenuated evoked adductor responses. We postulate that while these latter adductor responses may be insufficient to produce strong glottic closure, they may effectively modify phonatory function of the larynx. We have, therefore, attempted to demonstrate the effects of various sensory elicitations upon reflex laryngeal adduction as they may compositely influence both protective and phonatory control of this organ system.

In a retrospective study, granular cell tumors in six dogs (Nos. 1–6), three cats (Nos. 1–3), one horse (No. 1), and one cockatiel ( Nymphicus hollandicus) (No. 1) and a meningioma with a granular cell component in one dog (No. 7) were examined histologically and immunohistochemically. These tumors were identified by histologic examination of surgical biopsy specimens, except in the horse, in which the tumor was an incidental finding at necropsy. These diagnoses were initially made by more than one pathologist. Five of the six granular cell tumors in the dogs were in the oral cavity; one of these was in the maxillary gingiva of a 6-month-old puppy. The tumors in the cats were located in the tongue, vulva, and digit. The tumor in the horse was in the lung, and the tumor in the cockatiel was in the periocular tissue. Histologically, all granular cell tumors were characterized by oval to polygonal cells of various sizes. The cells had abundant, pale, eosinophilic cytoplasm with distinct intracytoplasmic granules, distinct cell margins, and mostly central nuclei. In the dogs, the gingival tumor had a large amount of collagen tissue, the tumor in the tongue had dilated blood vessels, and the maxillary tumor in the puppy was more cellular than the other tumors. The tumors in the cats were more anaplastic than the other tumors; one, located in the digit, was considered malignant. The granules in all of the tumors stained with periodic acid-Schiff and were diastase resistant. On staining with Luxol fast blue, the granules of all tumors stained different shades of pink, with the exception of the tumor in the tongue of a cat, which stained bluish green. Immunocytochemically, all tumors except the tumor in the cockatiel reacted against antibodies to vimentin. The granular cell tumor in the lung of the horse and the intracranial meningioma in a dog reacted to the antibody S-100 protein; the tumor in the horse reacted to neuron-specific enolase; tumors in two dogs (gingiva and skin) reacted to L-antitrypsin, and the maxillary tumor also reacted to lysozyme; the malignant tumor in the digit of a cat and the periocular tumor in the cockatiel reacted to muscle common actin and actin; the tumor in the cockatiel also reacted to desmin. Results of these immunocytochemical studies suggest that granular cell tumors, like tumors composed of rhabdoid cells, clear cells, and oncocytes, can have similar morphologic features but be of different cellular origins.

Disseminated disease in children and pulmonary disease in adults constitute two major epidemiological and clinical forms of tuberculosis. Paradoxically, only a small fraction of infected individuals develop clinical tuberculosis, typically one form of the disease or the other. Mendelian and complex genetic predispositions to tuberculosis were reported recently in children and adults, respectively. Here, we argue that tuberculosis and its clinical expression largely reflect the underlying human genetic background.

One important aspect of a cow’s comfort is the type of bedding used. Waterbeds for cows have recently gained popularity because of advertisements, news reports in outlets such as CNN. The UF/IFAS Dairy Unit (DU) provides a good opportunity to compare sand beds and waterbeds at optimal conditions. The dairy has waterbeds installed in one half of the barns and sand beds in the other half. This publication provides a field comparison of waterbeds and sand beds in one herd. We observed that when stalls are maintained at optimal conditions, cows in sand-bedded stalls had decreased incidence of hock lesions and increased stall usage compared to cows in waterbeds. Background: Patients with mass in the right iliac fossa may confront the surgeon, pediatrician or gynecologist. Thus, thorough understandings of the anatomy and pathological process that may occur within the abdomen are essential for an accurate diagnosis and plan of treatment. The objective of this study was to interpret aetiopathology, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis and management of mass in the right iliac fossa.Methods: A total of 60 cases with mass in the right iliac fossa (RIF) were included in the study. Investigations like colonoscopy and CT scan were done. All the cases underwent right hemicolectomy followed by chemotheraphy. Other cases like psoas abscess, non-hodgkins lymphoma, Meckels diverticulum and intussusception were diagnosed and treated.Results: During this study period, a total number of 36 cases of appendicular mass and 10 cases of appendicular abscess were encountered. In this study 10 cases of appendicular abscess were encountered and treated by extraperitoneal drainage, 4 cases of ileocaecal kochs were encountered. Patients presented with constitutional symptoms like pain, fever, weight loss etc. Right hemicolectomy was done, specimens after operative procedures were examined microscopically and histopathological diagnosis. 3 cases of carcinoma caecum and 3 cases of carcinoma ascending colon were seen. Contrast enema was done which showed filling defect and mucosal irregularities.Conclusions: This study showed that appendicular mass is the commonest pathology in right iliac fossa amongst all and conservative treatment followed by interval appendicectomy is the best mode of treatment. Carcinoma of the colon and ileocaecal tuberculosis is the other two common causes for mass in the right iliac fossa. These cases also carry a good prognosis, if properly diagnosed and treated. The other rare causes of mass in the right iliac fossa are intussusception, psoas abscess and Non Hodgkins lymphoma.

ABSTRACT There is a need for various anesthetic agents to obtain sperm in the field of human and veterinary medicine. Propofol and midazolam are among the most preferred among these agents. The aim of this study was to determine how sperm paramaters are affected according to the anesthetic agent used. Propofol (2mg/kg) and midazolam (3,5-7,5mg/kg) were administered twice a day (morning-evening) for one week. As a result of this study, there was no statistical difference in sperm density and abnormal sperm rates (respectively P=0,673, P=0,479). Sperm motility rates are similar in the control and propofol groups, while the motility rate in the midazolam group is statistically lower. (Control group %85 - Midazolam group %68.75 - Propofol group %83.75), (P<0.05). As a result of this study, the confidence interval of propofol was higher than the other anesthetic agents used for sperm retrieval.
