Background: Low-cycle fatigue damage accumulating to the point of structural failure has been recently reported at the origin of the human anterior cruciate ligament under strenuous repetitive loading. If this can occur in a ligament, low-cycle fatigue damage may also occur in the connective tissue of muscle-tendon units. To this end, we reviewed what is known about how, when, and where injuries of muscle-tendon units occur throughout the body. Purpose: To systematically review injuries in the muscle-tendon-bone complex; assess the site of injury (muscle belly, musculotendinous junction [MTJ], tendon/aponeurosis, tendon/aponeurosis–bone junction, and tendon/aponeurosis avulsion), incidence, muscles and tendons involved, mechanism of injury, and main symptoms; and consider the hypothesis that injury may often be consistent with the accumulation of multiscale material fatigue damage during repetitive submaximal loading regimens. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and ProQuest were searched on July 24, 2019. Quality assessment was undertaken using ARRIVE, STROBE, and CARE (Animal Research: Reporting In Vivo Experiments, Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology, and the Case Report Statement and Checklist, respectively). Results: Overall, 131 studies met the inclusion criteria, including 799 specimens and 2,823 patients who sustained 3,246 injuries. Laboratory studies showed a preponderance of failures at the MTJ, a viscoelastic behavior of muscle-tendon units, and damage accumulation at the MTJ with repetitive loading. Observational studies showed that 35% of injuries occurred in the tendon midsubstance; 28%, at the MTJ; 18%, at the tendon-bone junction; 13%, within the muscle belly and that 6% were tendon avulsions including a bone fragment. The biceps femoris was the most injured muscle (25%), followed by the supraspinatus (12%) and the Achilles tendon (9%). The most common symptoms were hematoma and/or swelling, tenderness, edema and muscle/tendon retraction. The onset of injury was consistent with tissue fatigue at all injury sites except for tendon avulsions, where 63% of the injuries were caused by an evident trauma. Conclusion: Excluding traumatic tendon avulsions, most injuries were consistent with the hypothesis that material fatigue damage accumulated during repetitive submaximal loading regimens. If supported by data from better imaging modalities, this has implications for improving injury detection, prevention, and training regimens.

The forging die material, a high strength steel designated W513 is considered in this paper. A fatigue damage model, based on thermodynamics and continuum damage mechanics, is constructed in which both the previous damage and the loading sequence are considered. The unknown material parameters in the model are identified from low cycle fatigue tests. Damage evolution under multi-level fatigue loading is investigated. The results show that the fatigue life is closely related to the loading sequence. The fatigue life of the materials with low fatigue loading first followed by high fatigue loading is longer than that for the reversed loading sequence.

A series of finite element analyses has been carried out in order to investigate the failure behaviors of degraded bent pipes with local thinning against seismic loading. The sensitivity of such parameters as the residual thickness, locations and width of the local thinning to the failure modes such as ovaling and local buckling and to the low cycle fatigue damage has been studied. It has been found that this approach is useful to make a reasonable experimental plan, which has to be carried out under the condition of limited cost and limited period.

The effects of cyclic pre-strain on low cycle fatigue properties of austenitic stainless steel were investigated, and the fatigue damage was assessed based on several parameters such as the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of diffracted X-ray profile and surface roughness of specimens. The strain-controlled tests were conducted under strain ratio Rε = −1 and various constant total strain ranges. Also the change in remnant fatigue lives were investigated when the cyclic pre-strain were applied to the specimens under the different number of cycles which were determined with reference to the usage factor UFpre ranged from 0.2 to 0.8. As a result, the remnant fatigue life of the pre-strained samples became shorter than that of the sample without pre-strain as the UFpre increased. The relationship between the pre-strain damage expressed in UFpre and the remnant fatigue damage in UFpost was roughly described by the cumulative linear damage law: UFpre + UFpost = 1. Namely, the cyclic pre-strain affected the remnant fatigue lives. In order to evaluate the effects of cyclic pre-strain on fatigue lives more precisely, the damage in the cyclic pre-straining processes was estimated by using FWHM and surface roughness. The FWHM of the specimens with pre-strain once decreased with increase in UFpre, and then increased after showing a minimum value. The surface roughness of specimens increased linearly with an increase of the number of pre-straining cycles. These results suggested that the damage due to pre-strain can be assessed by means of FWHM and surface roughness of specimens.

The multiaxial fatigue critical plane method can be used to evaluate the extremely-low-cycle fatigue (ELCF) damage of beam-to-column welded joints in steel frameworks subjected to strong seismic activity. In this paper, fatigue damage models using structural detail parameters are studied. Firstly, the fatigue properties obtained from experiments are adopted to assess ELCF life for steel frameworks. In these experiments, two types of welded specimens, namely, plate butt weld (PB) and cruciform load-carrying groove weld (CLG), are designed according to the structural details of steel beam and box column joints, in which both structural details and welded factors are taken into account. Secondly, experiments are performed on three full-scale steel welded beam-to-column joints to determine the contribution of stress and/or strain to damage parameters. Finally, we introduce a modification of the most popular fatigue damage model of Fatemi and Socie (FS), modified by us in a previous study, for damage evaluation, and compare this with Shang and Wang (SW) in order to examine the applicability of the fatigue properties of PB and CLG. This study shows that the modified FS model using the fatigue properties of CLG can predict the crack initiation life and evaluate the damage of beam-to-column welded joints, and can be subsequently used for further investigation of the damage evolution law.

Amorphous solids, such as certain polymers, alloys, and polymer-based composites,are increasingly used materials in engineering components and thus, their fatigue behavioris of utmost importance. The article presents a unified approach suitable for modeling bothisothermal high cycle and low cycle fatigue behavior. The emphasis is placed on the ductilefatigue in which fatigue damage represents the material degeneration during the creation ofmicro-cracks governing majority of the total fatigue life (up to 95%). The model’s capability fortechnologically important polycarbonate (PC) polymer is addressed. The results, in accordancewith experimental observations, favor ductile fatigue behavior, i.e. damage fields remain smallfor most of the fatigue life and do not cause the macroscopic stress reduction. Due to thisproperty, fatigue life of an entire structural element can be evaluated by exploiting singlelocations at which the fatigue damage decisively emerges.
