✓ A rare case of peripheral-nerve compression in the upper arm caused by a spontaneous venous aneurysm is reported. The apparent dysfunction of the median nerve led to various vain surgical explorations of the nerve at different levels. The real localization of nerve entrapment was identified by a thorough clinical examination, and sonography yielded a correct diagnosis. Surgical resection of the venous aneurysm resulted in complete relief of pain. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of a spontaneous venous malformation in the upper arm causing focal neuropathy.

A rare case of venous aneurysm involving the soleal muscle vein in an 18-year-old woman is presented. The patient showed three episodes of ultrasonographically proven calf muscle thrombosis within 2 years. After a short course of low-molecular-weight heparin at a therapeutic dosage, complete thrombus recanalization was achieved. To prevent further thrombotic episodes, surgery including ligation and resection of the aneurysm was performed. At the 3-month follow-up study the patient had completely recovered.

Popliteal venous aneurysms are rare vascular disorders associated with a high risk of pulmonary embolism. We present the case of a 56-year-old woman hospitalized for a third episode of unprovoked pulmonary embolism. Venous ultrasonography identified a popliteal aneurysm, repeatedly missed by two-point compression venous ultrasonography, which was eventually confirmed by a magnetic resonance examination. Because of its highly symptomatic nature despite optimal anticoagulant treatment, the decision was made to undergo surgery, consisting of aneurysmectomy followed by patch angioplasty. The goal of this paper is to report a rare case of popliteal venous aneurysm and its treatment strategies and postoperative evolution.

We report a case of a 21-year-old man with a popliteal venous aneurysm of the left popliteal fossa, with local symptoms and pain during palpation. Early diagnosis is fundamental in order to prevent the thromboembolic events or other major complications. Duplex scanning, Computed Tomography scanning, and Magnetic Resonance imaging are considered to be important non-invasive diagnostic methods for the diagnosis of PVA. The Angio Computed Tomography acquisition confirmed a 36 mm 17 mm oval mass in the left popliteal fossa continuous with the popliteal veins. This lesion had presented contrast enhancement only in delayed acquisition (180 sec) and so appeared to be a true venous aneurysm and no arterial. The PVA was repaired surgically via a posterior approach to the popliteal fossa. A aneurysm was identified. In the same time open tangential aneurysmectomy and lateral vein reconstruction were realised. This case is interesting because the Angio Computed Tomography study, in delayed acquisition, has allowed a correct diagnostic assessment of PVA and the surgical treatment.

AbstractIntroduction: An arteriovenous fistula (AVF) for placed for hemodialysis may be burdened by one particular complication-the formation of a venous aneurysm. It has been shown that matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) could represent markers of disease in both venous and arterial vessels.Materials and methods: This case study reports a rare case of enormous venous aneurysm-correlated MMP and NGAL levels in a woman with an AVF.Results: Significantly higher levels of plasma MMP-1, MMP-8, MMP-9, and NGAL were detected in this patient during aneurysmal evaluation before the surgery; these levels significantly decreased 1, 3 and 6 months after surgery.Conclusion: MMP and NGAL levels could represent a marker of aneurysmal disease, and their plasma evaluation could help physicians to stratify the risk of complications in patients with an AVF.

Electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis (EDXA) are found to be very useful tools for identification of etiologic agents in pneumoconiosis or interstitial pulmonary disorders. Pulmonary interstitial fibrosis and granulomatosis are frequently associated with occupational and environmental pollution. Numerous reports of pneumoconiosis in various occupations such as coal and gold miners are presented in the literature. However, there is no known documented case of pulmonary changes in workers in the sandpaper industry. This study reports a rare case of pulmonary granulomatosis containing deposits from abrasives of sandpaper diagnosed by using EDXA.
