Abstract Background The COVID-19 outbreak is a global pandemic, during which the community preventive and protective behaviors play a crucial role in the containment and control of infection. This study was designed to contribute to the existing knowledge on how risk communication (RC) and risk perception (RP) affect protective and preventive behaviors (PPB) during the COVID-19 outbreak. Methods The required data were extracted from a national online survey of Iranian adults aged 15 and older during March 15–19, 2020 (n=3213). Data analysis was performed using structural equation modeling. Results The study findings reveal that RC has direct and indirect positive effects on PB. Furthermore, this study also provides new evidence indicating that RP mediates the relationship between RC and PB and there is a two-way relationship between RC and RP. These interactions may have impact on risk communication strategies which should be adopted during this pandemic. Conclusion The study findings have remarkable implications for informing future communications as well as interventions during this ongoing outbreak and subsequent national risk events.

Many authors examined the interplay between gender and conflict management preferences, but those findings were often mixed and inconsistent. In the current paper we tried to explain those inconsistencies by investigating the mediating role of personality for the relationship of gender and conflict management. Rahim's inventory was used for identifying five conflict management styles, and Big Five Model theory was a base for assessing participants' personality traits. Data were collected from a sample of 1,055 working Poles (52.7% women), in an online survey. Based on the structural equation modeling we detected multiple indirect mediating paths of gender on conflict management via personality traits, while no direct effect of gender was observed. Despite some limitations, the study sheds light on the actual role of gender in conflict behavior and the importance of personality traits in the conflict management, both from a theoretical and practical perspective.

COVID-19 has spread around the world, causing a global pandemic, and to date is impacting in various ways in both developed and developing countries. We know that the spread of this virus is through people’s behavior despite the perceived risks. Risk perception plays an important role in decision-making to prevent infection. Using data from the online survey of participants in Peru and China (N = 1594), data were collected between 8 July 31 and August 2020. We found that levels of risk perception are relatively moderate, but higher in Peru compared to China. In both countries, anxiety, threat perception, self-confidence, and sex were found to be significant predictors of risk perception; however, trust in the information received by government and experts was significant only in Peru, whereas self-confidence had a significant negative effect only for China. Risk communication should be implemented through information programs aimed at reducing anxiety and improving self-confidence, taking into consideration gender differences. In addition, the information generated by the government should be based on empirical sources. Finally, the implications for effective risk communication and its impacts on the health field are discussed.

This study investigates the effects of cultural orientation and the degree of disdain for robots on the preferred conversational styles in human-to-robot interactions. 203 participants self-reported on questionnaires through a computer-based online survey. The two requesting situations were intended to simulate the participants’ interactions with humanoid social robots through an Internet video-phone medium of communication. Structural equation modeling was performed to examine the mediating role of mechanistic disdain between multicultural orientation and conversational constraints. The findings reveal that between the two dimensions of multicultural orientation, only open-mindedness inversely influences mechanistic disdain. Mechanistic disdain, in turn, negatively affects three face-related conversational constraints, thereby leading to a lesser concern for robots’ feelings, for minimizing impositions on robots, and for avoiding robots’ negative evaluations. The implications of our findings on humans’ relations with virtual robot entities and on the future development of humanoid robots are discussed.

PurposeThis study adopts self-determination theory and stimulus-organism-response framework to develop a model that explores the motivations of such donors by considering their self-determination needs and extrinsic and intrinsic motivations.Design/methodology/approachBased on online survey data collected from 436 crowdfunding donors in China, this study follows a structural equation modeling analysis to test hypotheses.FindingsThe results indicate that perceived ease of use, perceived self-efficacy and social connection have positive effects on the donation intentions of backers through a combination of extrinsic and intrinsic motivations.Originality/valueThe findings shed light on various extrinsic and intrinsic motivations advancing knowledge of individual fund motivation in donation-based crowdfunding and provide guidelines for the development of donation-based crowdfunding theory and practice.

Purpose The purpose of this study was, first, to link interpersonal-hedonic values, intuitive-experiential thinking style, external locus of control (LOC) and sociability to the need for interaction with a retail employee; and, second, to empirically test the moderating effect of the time convenience of self-service technologies (SSTs) on the proposed relationships in the model. Design/methodology/approach This study was conducted in a retail setting in which an automated checkout process occurred with the use of self-checkout systems. A self-administered, online survey approach was utilized targeting consumer panel members. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Findings Interpersonal-hedonic values, external LOC and sociability emerged as reliable antecedents of the need for interaction with a retail employee, whereas the intuitive-experiential thinking style did not. This study also showed the inverse relationship between the need for interaction with a retail employee and the intentions to use SSTs. In relation to the moderating role of the time convenience of SSTs, the positive effects of interpersonal-hedonic values, intuitive-experiential thinking style, external LOC and sociability on the need for interaction with a retail employee were shown lesser for consumers with low levels of the time convenience of SSTs. The negative effect of the need for interaction with a retail employee on the intentions to use SSTs was shown to be greater for consumers with low levels of the time convenience of SSTs. Originality/value The present study adds to a growing body of literature on SSTs by exploring the causal and hierarchical effects of personality traits that determine the intentions to use SSTs.

Background: Perceived severity of COVID-19 (SARS-COV-2) is known to be associated with mental health of people in general and health professionals in particular in Western societies. However, its association with the mental health of students in Pakistan, which is predominantly a Muslim society, remains unclear so far. Moreover, the role of Muslim religiosity for such an association has not yet been investigated. We aimed to examine the association and report findings on the impact of perceived severity on mental health with a sample of students from all five provinces of Pakistan.Methods: We did a cross-sectional online survey from 1,525 Pakistani students in March 2020 using standardized measurement tools. We then determined the prevalence of perceived severity among students and its impact on their mental health. The strength of associations between these variables was estimated using generalized linear models, with appropriate distribution and link functions. Structural equation modeling through SmartPLS (3.0) software was utilized to analyze the results.Findings: The perceived severity of COVID-19 is significantly associated with mental health of Pakistani students, whereas Muslim religiosity is a strong mediator between perceived severity and mental health of Pakistani students.Conclusions: Though the perceived severity of COVID-19 is associated with mental health, this relationship can be better explained by the role of Muslim religiosity. When tested individually, the perceived severity accounted for only 18% variance in mental health that increased up to 57% by the mediating role of Muslim religiosity. This difference clearly indicates the mediating role of Muslim religiosity in the association between perceived severity and mental health for Pakistani students.

Abstract This study aims to investigate the effects of positive and negative sentiment on impulsive buying behavior among Indonesia people based on the theory of stimulus organism response (S-O-R). First, it examines how COVID-19 information, information credibility, and scarcity affect positive sentiment and negative sentiment. Second, it verifies the influence of positive sentiment and negative sentiment on impulsive buying tendencies and impulsive buying behavior. Third, this study verifies impulsive buying tendency impacts impulsive buying behavior. Data was collected from Indonesian people living in a COVID-19 red zone with an online survey via Google form. In total, 320 respondents completed the survey and data analysis employs confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modelling (SEM).  The result found that COVID-19 information and information credibility have a positive effect on positive sentiment, while it has an insignificant effect on negative sentiment. Scarcity has a positive effect on negative sentiment; on the other hand, it has no significant effect on positive sentiment. Both positive sentiment and negative sentiment have positive effects on impulsive buying tendencies.  Only positive sentiment has a positive effect on impulsive buying behavior, while negative sentiment does not. Finally, impulsive buying tendencies have a positive effect on impulsive buying behavior.   AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi pengaruh positif sentimen dan negative sentimen terhadap perilaku pembelian tidak terencana masyarakat Indonesia berpijak pada teori stimulus organism response (S-O-R). Pertama, penelitian ini menguji bagaimana pengaruh informasi tentang COVID-19, kredibilitas informasi, dan kelangkaan terhadap sentimen positif dan sentimen negatif. Kedua, memverifikasi pengaruh sentimen positif dan sentimen negatif terhadap kecenderungan untuk melakukan pembelian tidak terencana dan perilaku pembelian tidak terencana. Ketiga, memverifikasi pengaruh kecenderungan untuk melakukan pembelian tidak terencana dan perilaku pembelian tidak terencana. Pengumpulan data penelitian ini dilakukan terhadap orang-orang Indonesia yang tingga di zona merah COVID-19 melalui survey online dengan Google form. Secara total ada 320 responden berpartisipasi dalam survey ini, kemudian data dianalisis menggunakan analisis confirmatory (CFA) dan struktural equation modeling (SEM). Hasilnya menunjuukan bahwa informasi tentang COVID-19 dan kredibilitas informasi mempunyai pengaruh positif terhadap sentimen positif, tetapi tidak mempunyai pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap sentimen negatif. Kelangkaan mempunyai pengaruh positif terhadap sentimen negatif, sebaliknya tidak mempunyai pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap sentimen positif. Baik sentimen positif maupun sentimen negatif mempunyai pengaruh positif terhadap kecenderungan untuk melakukan pembelian tidak terencana. Hanya, sentimen positif yang mempunyai pengaruh positif terhadap perilaku pembelian tidak terencana, sedangkan sentimen negatif tidak berpengaruh. Terakhir, kecenderungan untuk melakukan pembelian tanpa rencana mempunya pengaruh positif terhadap perilaku pembelian tidak terencana.

Abstract Backgrounds:This study aimed to develop a model for estimating the mediating effects of risk perception and confidence on the association between perceived social support and active coping with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic among people in Taiwan. Methods:The data of 1,970 participants recruited from a Facebook advertisement was analyzed. Perceived social support, active coping with COVID-19, risk perception and confidence were evaluated using self-administered questionnaires.Results:The structural equation modeling was applied to verify the direct and indirect effects between variables. The mediation model demonstrated that lower perceived social support was significantly associated with a higher level of active coping with COVID-19, and this was mediated by a higher level of risk perception. Conclusions:The present study identified the importance of risk perception on the public’s coping strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This study adopted a descriptive research design. Primary data collection was conducted through online survey instruments amongst 300 business school aspirants in India. The researcher adopted percentage analysis and a structural equation modeling approach for the analysis of data. The purpose of this study is to explore the mediating role of accreditation status and the selection of business schools based on the information from online resources.The findings of the study confirmed that the accreditation details act as a mediating variable between online resources and the selection of business schools. The significance of all the paths confirms the partial mediation of accreditation details on a selection of business schools. It is noted that those online resources have a significant direct effect on the selection of business schools.There exists a significant positive indirect effect of accreditation details on the online resources as well.This study will add to the existing literature on the aspects influencing millennials in their selection of business schools.This study will contribute to understanding the influence of online resources and the role of accreditation and rankings in students' selection of educational institutions.

PurposeThe aim of this paper is to analyse the effects of flow experience on repurchase intention. In this context, this paper examines the mediating role of e-customer satisfaction during COVID-19 pandemic. This study is based on flow theory using two consequent factors, which have not been investigated together previously.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire consisted of flow experience dimensions and e-customer satisfaction, repurchase intention. An online survey was conducted with 478 consumers who experienced flow in online shopping. Exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modelling were used to test research hypotheses. The research study data were collected between 20 March and 31 May 2020, during the spread of COVID-19.FindingsTelepresence, concentration and control dimensions of flow experience have a significant effect on e-customer satisfaction. In addition, it was determined that the change in repurchase intention was caused by concentration and telepresence dimensions of flow experience. Therefore, it was found that e-customer satisfaction has a significant effect on repurchase intention. As a result, it was determined that e-customer satisfaction has a partial mediating role in the effect of flow experience dimensions of telepresence, concentration and control, and a full mediating role in the effect of flow experience dimension of time distortion on repurchase intention.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitations of the study are that research was conducted on only one retail company and a limited number of participants were reached. In addition, some flow experience dimensions were excluded in the study, constituting another limitation.Originality/valueThis paper contributes flow theory literature by modelling flow dimensions as an independent variable that affects e-customer satisfaction and repurchase intention. In addition, different dimensions of flow experience in online retailing have been discussed, and no study has been found that discusses flow experience dimensions (goal clarity, enjoyment, curiosity, control, telepresence, time distortion, concentration) together. This study conducted during COVID-19 pandemic would produce a different perspective on flow experience in e-retailing
