Abstract Background According to the diagnosis criteria of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE), sensitive responses to cold and/or heat tests of suspected teeth compared with those of control teeth can be used for the diagnosis of pulpitis, but the role of electric pulp test (EPT) is not mentioned. It is believed that EPT has some limitations in determining the vitality of the pulp. The aim of this study was to explore the association between the difference in EPT values and the differential diagnoses of reversible pulpitis (RP) and symptomatic irreversible pulpitis (SIRP) caused by dental caries. Methods A total of 203 cases with pulpitis caused by dental caries were included. A diagnosis of pulpitis was made on the basis of the diagnostic criteria of AAE. Patient demographic and clinical examination data were collected. The EPT values of the suspected teeth and control teeth were measured, and the differences between them were calculated. The correlation between the difference in the EPT values and diagnosis of pulpitis was analyzed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Results In the 203 cases (78 males and 125 females; 115 cases of RP, 88 cases of SIRP; 9 anterior teeth, 59 premolars, and 135 molars), the mean patient age was 34.04 ± 13.02 (standard deviation) years. The unadjusted (crude) model, model 1 (adjusted for age), model 2 (adjusted for age and sex), and model 3 (adjusted for age, sex, and tooth type) were established for the statistical analyses. In model 3 [odds ratio (OR) = 1.025; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.002–1.050; P = 0.035], the difference in EPT values between RP and SIRP was statistically significant. However, the areas under the curve of predictive probability of the crude model, model 1, model 2, and model 3 were 0.565, 0.570, 0.585, and 0.617, respectively, showing that the model accuracy was low. The P-value for the trend in differences between the EPT values as a categorical variable showed that the differences in the EPT values, comparing RP and SIRP, were not statistically significant. Conclusions Based on the present data, the difference in EPT values was not sufficient to differentiate RP from SIRP.

Henoch-Schoniein purpura (HSP) is the most common type of childhood vasculitis. The skin lesions are the most obvious sign but visceral involvement carries a more serious prognosis. Increasing amounts of data are available regarding the possible role of prostacyclin (PGI2) in the pathogenesis of other vasculo-pathies, but no-one has previously investigated HSP. 17 HSP patients (mean age (SD) 5.7 (2.5) years) and 17 matched controls were studied. The ability of plasma (patient and control) to support PGI2 -like activity was tested. Human umbilical arteries were chopped into rings and incubated in buffer at 37° C. Aliquots of the supernatant were added to platelet rich plasma (PRP) and platelet aggregation measured (Malin's aggregometer). Repeated washings of the rings then depleted PGI. production. The rings were then incubated with test platelet poor plasma (PPP) at 37° C. PGI2 like activity was assessed as before and the results expressed as a percentage of the aggregation obtained by the same exhausted ring before addition of PPP. The results show that the ability of test PPP to support PGI2 like activity was reduced in 13/17 HSP patients. The difference between patients (21.3 (SD 20.5%) and controls (57.2 (SD 12.2%) was significant (p<0.001). Patients with renal and gastro-intestinal involvement (7.5 (SD 18.1%) were significantly different from those patients with only skin involvement (32.3 (SD 23.5%) (p<0.01). Plasma from six patients in which PGI^like activity was undetectable using the above method were further studied to detect PGI2 -inhibitory activity. Unexhausted umbilical rings were incubated at 37°C for 5mins. The baseline PGI2 like activity of the supernatant was compared with that produced after 5mins. incubation with test PPP (o patients, 6 controls). Less like activity was produced by the unexhausted rings when incubated with PPP from the HSP patients than with either control buffer or control PPP (both p<0.01). It seems likely that these abnormalities, having been demonstrated in yet another vasculitic syndrome, are secondary to endothelial damage. The disturbances, however, may well be of importance in extending the primary microvascular insult

Background: Megaloblastic anemias are macrocytic normochromic anemia with mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of 100 fl-140 fl and caused by deficiency of either cobalamin (vitamin B12) or folate. However, increased MCV is not specific for megaloblastic anemia, nor is Vitamin B12 assay by chemiluminescence. We undertook this study to evaluate the possible role of Volume, Conductivity and Scatter (VCS) of WBCs derived from standard hematology analyzer to indicate megaloblastic anemia. Methods: We performed a case control study comparing data of 60 patients with low serum vitamin B12 or folate levels with 60 healthy volunteers. Comparison of the volume, conductivity and scatter parameters for neutrophils and monocytes of cases and control were done. Result: The mean neutrophil volume of cases (158.37±18.13fl) was significantly higher (p= 0.0001) compared to controls (141.26±4.22fl). Similarly, mean monocyte volume of cases (183.34±16.90fl) was significantly (p=0.0001) higher compared to controls (166.55±8.66fl). The difference in the mean conductivity of both neutrophils and monocytes between cases and controls were insignificant (p=0.43). Conclusion: Our study suggests analysis of VCS parameters for neutrophils and monocytes was a simple and objective method that substantiates the existence of subclinical deficiency of vitamin B 12 and folate with fair degree of certainty.

Taking as a starting point studies on the biopolitics of bordering, as well as media studies, this article explores how information campaigns deter potential migrants and refugees from leaving their countries depict them in very specific ways, operating as ‘new bordering practices’ that are in conjunction with extraterritorial border policies. This article probes this question through the example of a specific information campaign – Aware Migrants (2016) – funded by the Italian Government and managed by International Organization for Migration (IOM) to dissuade potential newcomers from attempting the journey across the Mediterranean Sea. As the analysis of Aware Migrants makes clear, it contributes to normalizing a transnational imaginary into a militarized borderscape comprising places of violence and death, exploitation and detention, which is part of the complex dichotomies of care and control, proper of contemporary border regimes. Finally, the article sheds light on how these symbolic bordering practices contribute to nurturing a ‘compassionate repression’ that increasingly and silently legitimizes the difference between the ‘us’ (the figure of the citizen) and the ‘them’ (the figure of the foreigner).

Increasingly rapid economic development resulted in many new companies springing up and creating a tight business competition. To be able to maintain business continuity, companies must be able to make a careful planning and control of the costs. Planning and control can be realized with the budget as a mean of control. Controlling costs by the company are intended to enable companies to minimize costs. At minimal costs the company will be able to achieve the profit target by more optimal as primary destinations in general. In connection to this, the purpose of this study was to determine the costs of the company budget preparation, budget realization costs and revenues, as well as the role of the budget as a mean of control in achieving its profit target. The research was conducted at PT ABC located in Bogor. PT ABC is one of the private companies engaged in construction services focusing on building the types of housing. This kind of development focus includes the construction of a building without infrastructure development. The study of PT ABC shows that the preparation of the company's budget is based on field survey and accompanying informations on the revenue budget and previous projects. In the implementation of the work there was an increase in the actual cost, thus resulting difference in the budget and actual costs. The occurrence of this difference will reduce the company’s profits. Overall budgets have created optimal control of the realization of the costs incurred. Budget serves as guidelines and benchmarks maximum value in any cost incurred by the company. However, in the implementation of the work there are still some shortcomings, resulting cost difference persists. This difference occurs because lack of oversight of the usage of raw materials. Companies must be able to improve control over the using of raw materials to be better coordinated. Increased control is evidenced by the increase in its profit target achievement on the next project. In the subsequent project, company managed to improve the performance of surveillance so that the difference in costs declined and its optimal profit target can be achieved.

Recent literature points to a potential link between the evolution of complex social behavior and the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in primates including humans (Parkinson & Wheatley, 2013). Thus far, this theory has been overlooked in other highly social animals that may have also evolved due to social selective pressures. In rodents, there is limited knowledge on the involvement of the PPC on sociality, and most studies of such behavior are limited to understanding social preference. We investigated the role of the PPC through two experiments using the 3-Chamber Sociability and Social Novelty test in rats (Crawley, 2004). In Experiment 1, we used a standard 3-Chamber paradigm, which included two novel demonstrators. In Experiment 2, this paradigm was altered to increase the difference in familiarity between demonstrators such that one demonstrator was highly familiar to the subject and the other was entirely novel. Rats with pre-testing permanent neurotoxic lesions were compared to sham surgery control rats, and the same rats were used for both experiments. Experiments 1 and 2 showed that both groups of rats preferred general social interaction, suggesting no deficit in sociability following PPC damage, regardless of demonstrator identity. Further, experimental and control rats showed similar levels of novelty preference following PPC damage, with novelty preferences increasing in Experiment 2. We argue that heightened novelty preference in Experiment 2 may reflect the increased difference in familiarity between demonstrators. Within the confines of the 3-Chamber task, our results suggest that PPC function was not required for general sociability or social novelty recognition. Because the PPC is implicated in abstract cognition, we argue that existing social tests in rodents may not adequately measure the complex cognitive capacities thought to be supported by the PPC. Future studies should investigate the role of the PPC in social cognition by employing behavioral tasks that require higher cognitive demand rather than testing inherent preference for social partners. Outside of our investigation of the PPC, these results show that social novelty preference can be manipulated through changes in familiarity of demonstrators, and that rats can discriminate others social identities.

Chapter six discusses the effects produced by Pasolini’s vocal performance in his films. Pasolini’s voice changes according to the function attributed to his authorial presence. It is his real voice when he presents himself as the author, as in film experiments such as Appunti per un’Orestiade Africana (Notes Toward an African Orestes, 1970) and Comizi d’amore (Love Meetings, 1963). However, when he plays a character in a fictional narrative, as in the case of The Trilogy of Life, his voice is dubbed. In this chapter I examine the difference between these two kinds of voice, showing that also dubbing and voiceover are elements of the performance of Pasolini’s authorship. I focus particularly on dubbing in Edipo re (Oedipus Rex, 1967), where Pasolini played the apparently marginal role of the High Priest. Pasolini’s use of his actual voice, as in the case of the voiceover in La sequenza del fiore di carta (The Sequence of the Paper Flower, 1969) and La Ricotta shows the author’s epistemic authority and control over the interpretation of his work. He particularly emphasizes the importance of his vocal performance in Love Meetings, a cinéma vérité experiment in which he interviews Italian people of all kind on issues concerning sexuality. However, when the questions turn to homosexuality, Pasolini silences his own voice (and authority), in order to reveal the homophobic violence of 1960s Italian society, unfiltered. Pasolini’s silence thus produces a subtle and subversive homopolitical intervention, which anticipates the more militant and strategic use of homosexual desire in The Trilogy of Life.

A lack of the cytoskeletal protein dystrophin causes muscle fiber necrosis in Duchenne/Becker muscular dystrophies (DMD/BMD) and in murine X-linked muscular dystrophy (MDX). However, no overt disease symptoms are observed in dystrophin-less cultured myotubes, and the biological function of dystrophin in normal muscle cells is still unknown. In this work, we have extended our studies on a model system, using hypoosmotic shock to determine stress resistance of muscle cells. In frozen sections of control human and mouse myotubes, dystrophin was shown to be localized at the cell periphery as in mature muscle fibers. Dystrophin-less DMD and MDX myotubes were more susceptible to hypoosmotic shock than controls, as monitored by the uptake of external horseradish peroxidase and release of the soluble enzymes creatinine kinase or pyruvate kinase and of radiolabelled proteins. Control experiments indicated that this difference is not due to differences in metabolism or ion fluxes. Treatment with cytochalasin D drastically increased the shock sensitivity of myotubes and abolished the difference between dystrophin-less and control cells. These results lend further support to the suggested stabilizing role of dystrophin in the context of the membrane-cytoskeletal complex.
