A method of magnetic interpretation of arbitrarily magnetized dikes and faults is developed, based on the properties of a new characteristic point called the “midpoint.” Anomaly profiles at two levels are considered, the maximum and minimum anomalies on them are located, and their midpoints are plotted. The rate of shift of the midpoint with elevation is a measure of the direction of magnetization. The distances between the points of maximum and minimum anomalies and the ratio of horizontal to vertical gradients in the case of faults are used to calculate the other parameters. I also suggest application of the method to anomalies of sheet‐like bodies.

Nabighian (1984) and Nelson (1986) have both derived relations between horizontal and vertical gradients of magnetic fields (or any other potential field), whereby a knowledge of one enables one to calculate the other. As pointed out by Nelson, Nabighian’s derivation is quite lengthy. In the following, I offer an alternative derivation in the wavenumber domain, which is even shorter than that given by Nelson.

The anatomic distributions of ventilation (VA) and perfusion (Q) in prone and supine dogs have been described in the literature. These data also provide frequency distributions, i.e., the distribution of lung units as a function of VA or Q. A comprehensive distribution that encompasses these two distributions is described, and the properties of the comprehensive distribution that determine the width of the VA/Q distribution are identified. Using data on the VA and Q distributions taken from various sources in the literature, we estimated the widths of the VA/Q distributions. The widths estimated from the independent data on the VA and Q distributions agree well with the widths obtained from gas exchange data. The analysis provides information about the relative contributions of the VA and Q distributions to the width of the VA/Q distribution. In the prone dog, the VA and Q distributions, as described by the available data, have different length scales, and we argue that these distributions are therefore not highly correlated. As a result, the variance of the VA/Q distributions is approximately the sum of the variances of the VA and Q distributions. Two-thirds of the variance in VA/Q is a result of nonuniform Q, and one-third is a result of nonuniform VA. In the supine dog, the variance of VA is larger than in the prone dog because of a vertical gradient and the variance of Q is larger, in part, because of a vertical gradient. Because the magnitudes of the vertical gradients of VA and Q are about equal, the vertical gradient of VA/Q is small, and these components of the VA and Q inhomogeneities contribute little to the width of the VA/Q distribution. The other components of Q inhomogeneity cause the additional variance of VA/Q in the supine dog.

This manuscript contains a detailed comparison between numerical solution methods of ordinary differential equations, which start from the Taylor series method of order 2, stating that this series hinders calculations for higher order derivatives of functions of several variables, so that the Runge Kutta methods of order 2 are implemented, which achieve the required purpose avoiding the cumbersome calculations of higher order derivatives. In this document, different variants of the Runge-Kutta methods of order 2 will be exposed from an introduction and demonstration of the connection of these with the Taylor series of order 2, these methods are: the method of Heun, the method of midpoint and the Ralston method. It will be observed from the solution of test differential equations its respective error with respect to the analytical solution, obtaining an error index dictated by the mean square error EMC. Through this document we will know the best numerical approximation to the analytical solution of the different PVI (initial value problems) raised, also fixing a solution pattern for certain problems, that is, the appropriate method for each type of problem will be stipulated. It was observed that the Ralston method presented greater accuracy followed by the midpoint method and the Heun method, in the other PVI it is observed that the midpoint method yields the best numerical solution since it has a very low EMC and difficult to reach by the other methods.

Abstract. In-situ, quasi-continuous measurements of atmospheric hydrogen (H2) have been performed since 2007 at the Cabauw tall tower station in the Netherlands. Mole fractions of H2, CO and several greenhouse gases are determined simultaneously in air sampled successively at four heights, between 20 and 200 m above ground level. 222Rn measurements are performed in air sampled at 20 and 200 m. This H2 dataset represents the first in-situ, quasi-continuous measurement series of vertical profiles of H2 in the lower continental boundary layer. From the three-year long time series, we characterize the main features and variability patterns of H2 and CO on various time scales; the time series is too short to justify an attempt to determine multi-annual trends. Seasonal cycles are present in both H2 and CO, and their amplitude varies with the sampling height. The seasonality is evident in both the "baseline" values and in the short term (diurnal to synoptic time scales) variability, the latter being significantly larger during winter. The observed H2 short term signals and vertical gradients are in many cases well correlated to other species, especially to CO. On the other hand, H2 has at times a behaviour which differentiates it from all the other species measured, due to its particular distribution of sources and sinks, that is, with the main source in our area (anthropogenic emissions) and the main sink (soil uptake) both near ground level. The local to regional soil sink of H2 is observable as H2 depletion at the lower sampling levels in some of the stable nights, although the signals at Cabauw are smaller than observed at other stations. Positive vertical gradients are another consequence of the soil uptake. Our estimation for the regional H2 soil uptake flux, using the radon tracer method, is (−1.89 ± 0.26) × 10−5 g/(m2h), significantly smaller than other recent results from Europe. Local soil and weather characteristics might be responsible for the very low soil uptake of H2. Our result could also be biased by the absence of radon flux estimates that could reliably approximate the fluxes during the relevant time intervals in our study domain. H2/CO ratios of the traffic emissions computed from our data, with an average of 0.54 ± 0.07 mol:mol, are larger and more scattered than estimated in some of the previous studies in Europe. This difference can be explained by a different driving regime, due to the frequent traffic jams in the influence area of Cabauw. In contrast, the H2/CO ratios of the large scale pollution events, with an average of 0.36 ± 0.05 mol:mol, are very similar to results of previous studies; these ratios were observed to slightly increase with sampling height, possibly due to a stronger influence of soil uptake at the lower sampling heights.

Stromatoporoids are the principal framebuilding organisms in the patch reef that is part of the reservoir of the Normandville field. The reef is 10 m thick and 1.5 km2in area and demonstrates that stromatoporoids retained their ability to build reefal edifices into Famennian time despite the biotic crisis at the close of Frasnian time. The fauna is dominated by labechiids but includes three non-labechiid species. The most abundant species isStylostroma sinense(Dong) butLabechia palliseriStearn is also common. Both these species are highly variable and are described in terms of multiple phases that occur in a single skeleton. The other species described areClathrostromacf.C. jukkenseYavorsky,Gerronostromasp. (a columnar species), andStromatoporasp. The fauna belongs in Famennian/Strunian assemblage 2 as defined by Stearn et al. (1988).

(Ed. note:Encouraged by the success of the more informal approach in Christy's presentation, we tried an even more extreme experiment in this session, I-D. In essence, Kraft held the floor continuously all morning, and for the hour and a half afternoon session, serving as a combined Summary-Introductory speaker and a marathon-moderator of a running discussion on the line spectrum of cepheids. There was almost continuous interruption of his presentation; and most points raised from the floor were followed through in detail, no matter how digressive to the main presentation. This approach turned out to be much too extreme. It is wearing on the speaker, and the other members of the symposium feel more like an audience and less like participants in a dissective discussion. Because Kraft presented a compendious collection of empirical information, and, based on it, an exceedingly novel series of suggestions on the cepheid problem, these defects were probably aggravated by the first and alleviated by the second. I am much indebted to Kraft for working with me on a preliminary editing, to try to delete the side-excursions and to retain coherence about the main points. Pecker:The topic to be considered today is the continuous spectrum of certain stars, whose variability we attribute to a pulsation of some part of their structure. Obviously, this continuous spectrum provides a test of the pulsation theory to the extent that the continuum is completely and accurately observed and that we can analyse it to infer the structure of the star producing it. The continuum is one of the two possible spectral observations; the other is the line spectrum. It is obvious that from studies of the continuum alone, we obtain no direct information on the velocity fields in the star. We obtain information only on the thermodynamic structure of the photospheric layers of these stars–the photospheric layers being defined as those from which the observed continuum directly arises. So the problems arising in a study of the continuum are of two general kinds: completeness of observation, and adequacy of diagnostic interpretation. I will make a few comments on these, then turn the meeting over to Oke and Whitney.

A new 24-inch/36-inch//3 Schmidt telescope, made by C. Zeiss, Jena, has been installed since 30 August 1962, at the N. Copernicus University Observatory in Toruń. It is equipped with two objective prisms, used separately, one of crown the other of flint glass, each of 5° refracting angle, giving dispersions of 560Å/mm and 250Å/ mm respectively.

Abstract Michael Tomasello explains the human sense of obligation by the role it plays in negotiating practices of acting jointly and the commitments they underwrite. He draws in his work on two models of joint action, one from Michael Bratman, the other from Margaret Gilbert. But Bratman's makes the explanation too difficult to succeed, and Gilbert's makes it too easy.

AbstractWe have developed a model for theH2OandOHevolution in a comet outburst, assuming that together with the gas, a distribution of icy grains is ejected. With an initial mass of icy grains of 108kg released, theH2OandOHproductions are increased up to a factor two, and the growth curves change drastically in the first two days. The model is applied to eruptions detected in theOHradio monitorings and fits well with the slow variations in the flux. On the other hand, several events of short duration appear, consisting of a sudden rise ofOHflux, followed by a sudden decay on the second day. These apparent short bursts are frequently found as precursors of a more durable eruption. We suggest that both of them are part of a unique eruption, and that the sudden decay is due to collisions that de-excite theOHmaser, when it reaches the Cometopause region located at 1.35 × 105kmfrom the nucleus.
