Military vehicles have to travel, at least from time to time, on the national road network. Whenever that happens, the legal requirements have to be met with respect to the systems that contribute to the traffic safety. One of these systems is the braking system. On the other hand, most of the military vehicles arent that up-to-date that the rest of the traffic partners are. Therefore, a military automotive engineer should have at hand a fast method to diagnose the technical status of the braking system even the checked vehicle is rather old. It would be also even better if the faulty party were accurately identified. The paper aims at providing a method helps the diagnosing teams to quickly compare the behaviour of an actual vehicle braking system status with a general model that had been acquired by tests. Since nobody provided that kind of information during 70s, our model derived from a large number of tests that have been performed on good technical condition vehicles. <p>Many developed countries have a national road network including a significant number of bridges in need of renovation or replacement in the coming years. The reason for this is their technical and functional capacity becoming insufficient due to aging and changes in societal demands. Therefore, these bridges need to be adjusted or replaced. National authorities in The Netherlands currently require a design life of 100 years for new bridges, however nowadays it seems reasonable to have a certain flexibility for this parameter. Since the selected design life has its implications on structural solutions and choice of materials, the identification of the optimal design life for bridges seems necessary. This paper gives a summary on the issue regarding the optimum design life of bridges and it highlights the framework of the upcoming research activities.</p>

The analysis of national data on the number of deaths showed that in Poland from 2010 to 2016 it was possible to reduce the number of fatalities by about 22%. The tendency of changes in the number of fatalities, however, is not homogeneous. When data of individual voivodships is analyzed, the situation is different. The largest reduction in fatalities in the analyzed period of time concerned voivodship Świętokrzyskie, where there was more than 45% drop in the number of fatalities. The following voivodships: Łódzkie, Lubelskie and Podkarpackie recorded a decrease in over 30% of fatalities. Unfortunately, at the end of the classification there were four voivodships with a fall below 8%, and what is disturbing voivodship Lubuskie recorded a nearly 5% increase in the number of fatalities. The current traffic safety management at the level of voivodships is often the implementation of central recommendations, which, as results from the analysis of statistical data, are not equally effective in every province. Therefore, models for forecasting changes in road safety are required. Taking into account local characteristics and implemented actions can be used to manage security more effectively at the regional level. This paper presents examples of the use of mathematical models to predict the number of fatalities in individual voivodships depending on the adopted action scenarios. Regression models were developed, taking into account demographic, infrastructural, economic and automotive factors. It turned out that in individual voivodships, various factors affect the level of road safety on roads differently. Therefore, an individual approach to each voivodship is important in order to reliably forecast the level of security.

Measuring friction between the tyres of a vehicle and the road, often and on as many locations on the road network as possible, can be a valuable tool for ensuring traffic safety. Rather than by using specialised equipment for sequential measurements, this can be achieved by using several low-cost measuring devices on vehicles that travel on the road network as part of their daily assignments. The presented work proves the hypothesis that a low cost measuring device can be built and can provide measurement results comparable to those obtained from expensive specialised measuring devices. As a proof of concept, two copies of a prototype device, based on the Raspberry Pi single-board computer, have been developed, built and tested. They use accelerometers to measure vehicle braking deceleration and include a global positioning receiver for obtaining the geolocation of each test. They run custom-developed data acquisition software on the Linux operating system and provide automatic measurement data transfer to a server. The operation is controlled by an intuitive user interface consisting of two illuminated physical pushbuttons. The results show that for braking tests and friction coefficient measurements the developed prototypes compare favourably to a widely used professional vehicle performance computer.
