Abstract Fifty-seven cases of oligodendroglioma (including eight cases of malignant oligodendroglioma) treated at the University of Tokyo Hospital between 1961 and 1985 were analyzed for factors influencing the survival rate. Factors related to a poor outcome were findings of malignancy and symptoms of dementia. Survival rate and postoperative survival period were not influenced significantly by radiation therapy, extent of resection, tumor characteristics, or ABO blood groups.

Statistical analysis of the variations in blood group distribution among 470 consecutive cases of meningioma, operated at the Institute of Neurosurgery of the University of Padua, shows a statistically significant increase in the frequency of group B.

The statistical significance of variations in Wood group distribution among patients affected by chromophobe pituitary adenoma has been debated in recent reports. One hundred and fifty hypophyseal tumors (117 chromophobe adenomas and 33 adenomas of other histological type), operated for the first time at the Institute of Neurosurgery of the University of Padua, have been collected for such an analysis. No difference of statistical significance was detected by the present survey, although this fact is probably due to the small numbers of patients in each subgroup.

Background: Osteosarcoma is the most common type of primary bone tumor in children and adolescents, which is associated with rapid progression and poor prognosis. Multimodal therapy is the most common approach utilized for osteosarcoma management, such as the application of chemotherapy in combination with surgery or radiation therapy. Cisplatin is one of the predominantly used chemotherapeutic agents for osteosarcoma. Optimally, it is employed in combination with other chemotherapeutic drugs along with surgery or radiation therapy. Despite the availability of numerous treatment approaches, patient survival rate has not definitively improved over the past three decades. Methods: We summarized all findings regarding the combination of cisplatin with other chemotherapeutic agents as well as with phytochemical compounds. Results: A combination of cisplatin with phytochemical compound synergistically enhances the killing effect of cisplatin on osteosarcoma cells with fewer side effects compared to combination with other chemotherapeutic agents. Conclusion: Conclusively, a combination of cisplatin with selected chemotherapeutic drugs, has been shown to be effective. However, the unchanged survival rate urges for the search of a new combination regimen. As a collaborative effort to substantiate the therapeutic efficacy, the combination with phytochemical compounds shows a promising response both in vitro as well as in the preclinical study.

A study was carried out to find out the retrospective incidence of uterine torsion in buffaloes among obstetrical cases in Amul milk shed area and factors influencing it. Data on 1,13,772 obstetrical cases attended from January 2017 to June 2018 by Amul Veterinarians were collected. Moreover, 50 buffaloes suffering from uterine torsion were taken up during July-December, 2018 to know the side, site, degree of uterine torsion, parity as well as sex and viability of the calf and the dam after detorsion/Caesarean section in the same area. In the retrospective study, a total of 2000 cases of uterine torsion were recorded among total 1,13,772 bovine obstetrical cases, which encompassed 1.76%. Of the 2000 cases, 92.20 (1844) percent torsions were found in buffaloes only. Among 57,111 obstetrical cases attended in buffaloes, the incidence of uterine torsion was 3.23%. Moreover, the region/center-wise incidence of torsion cases varied from 1.30–19.36%. The highest incidence of uterine torsion was found in Anand region (19.36 %) followed by Kathlal (11.23 %) and Mahemdabad (10.14 %) regions, while the lowest incidence was in Virpur (2.06%), Petlad (1.46%) and Piplata (1.30%). It was concluded that buffaloes mostly experience right side (100%), post-cervical (82%) uterine torsion of 270–360° (66%), at full term of gestation (70%)with lower survivability of the calves (30%), however, the survival rate of the dams post-treatment was 90%.

Abstract Background Susceptibility to the pandemic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has recently been associated with ABO blood groups in patients of different ethnicities. This study sought to understand the genetic association of this polymorphic system with risk of disease in Iraqi patients. Two outcomes of COVID-19, recovery and death, were also explored. ABO blood groups were determined in 300 hospitalized COVID-19 Iraqi patients (159 under therapy, 104 recovered, and 37 deceased) and 595 healthy blood donors. The detection kit for 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) RNA (PCR-Fluorescence Probing) was used in the diagnosis of disease. Results Mean age was significantly increased in patients compared to controls (49.8 ± 11.7 vs. 28.9 ± 6.6 years; p < 0.001). A similar observation was made in recovered (42.1 ± 10.4 vs. 28.9 ± 6.6 years; p < 0.001) and deceased (53.6 ± 9.7 vs. 28.9 ± 6.6 years; p < 0.001) cases. The mean age was also significantly increased in deceased cases compared to recovered cases (53.6 ± 9.7 vs. 42.1 ± 10.4 years; p < 0.001). There were gender-dependent differences in COVID-19 prevalence. The percentage of COVID-19 was higher in males than in females (all cases: 59.7 vs. 40.3%; recovered cases: 55.8 vs. 44.2%). Such male-gender preponderance was more pronounced in deceased cases (67.6 vs. 32.4%). Logistic regression analysis revealed that groups AB and B + AB were significantly associated with increased risk to develop COVID-19 (OR = 3.10; 95% CI 1.59–6.05; pc = 0.007 and OR = 2.16; 95% CI 1.28–3.63; pc = 0.028, respectively). No ABO-associated risk was observed in recovered cases. On the contrary, groups A (OR = 14.60; 95% CI 2.85–74.88; pc = 0.007), AB (OR = 12.92; 95% CI 2.11–79.29; pc = 0.042), A + AB (OR = 14.67; 95% CI 2.98–72.33; pc = 0.007), and A + B + AB (OR = 9.67; 95% CI 2.02–46.24; pc = 0.035) were associated with increased risk of death in deceased cases. Conclusions The findings of this study suggest that group AB may be a susceptibility biomarker for COVID-19, while group A may be associated with increased risk of death.

Abstract The University of Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur had acquired a intraoperative MRI (iMRI) brain suite via a public private initiative in September 2015. The MRI brain suite has a SIEMENS 1.5T system with NORAS coil system and NORAS head clamps in a two room solution. We would like to retrospectively review the cranial paediatric neuro-oncology cases that had surgery in this facility from September 2015 till December 2019. We would like to discuss our experience with regard to the clear benefits and the challenges in using such technology to aid in the surgery. The challenges include the physical setting up the paediatric case preoperatively, the preparation and performing the intraoperative scan, the interpretation of intraoperative images and making a decision and the utilisation of the new MRI data set to assist in the navigation to locate the residue safely. Also discuss the utility of the intraoperative images in the decision of subsequent adjuvant management. The use of iMRI also has other technical challenges such as ensuring the perimeter around the patient is free of ferromagnetic material, the process of transfer of the patient to the scanner and as a consequence increased duration of the surgery. CONCLUSION: Many elements in the use of iMRI has a learning curve and it improves with exposure and experience. In some areas only a high level of vigilance and SOP (Standard operating procedure) is required to minimize mishaps. Currently, the iMRI gives the best means of determining extent of resection before concluding the surgery.
