A Study of CEO Transformational Leadership, Organizational Factors and Product Innovation Performance: Scale Development and a Theoretical Framework

The purpose of this study is to provide a scale development process, in order to preliminarily address the reliability and validity of CEO transformational leadership, some key organizational factors, and product innovation performance constructs. Data for this study were collected from 264 manufacturing firms in Thailand. The measurement scales were pre-assessed using the Q-sort method, and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was also conducted to assess the construct reliability and validity. This research established a theoretical framework of CEO transformational leadership, organizational factors including innovation strategy, organizational learning, innovation culture, new product development process, and product innovation performance. Q-sort technique and EFA can help improve the content validity and the construct validity of CEO transformational leadership, some key organizational factors, and product innovation performance. This study provided the initial developmental steps toward the building of a theoretical framework and scale measurement to allow better understanding of the constructs based on the context of firms in Thailand. This will allow researchers to bring new insights when exploring these constructs under differing operational conditions. The findings address additional steps required towards improved methodological aspects in terms of how to pre-validate and develop a measurement scale in various constructs within alternative domains.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the direct and indirect effects of CEO transformational leadership on product innovation performance. This research investigates the mechanism between CEO transformational leadership and product innovation performance, to understand the process through which transformational CEOs exert their influence. Design/methodology/approach This study is a quantitative research. Data were collected from 269 manufacturing firms in Thailand through a mail survey. This research applied a two-step structural equation modeling process. Findings The results indicate that CEO transformational leadership indirectly affects product innovation performance through an innovation culture, organizational learning, and the new product development (NPD) process. CEO transformational leadership has a strong effect on innovation culture and organizational learning. Organizational learning is strongly associated with the NPD process, which significantly leads to product innovation performance. By integrating the knowledge of leadership and operations management fields, this study helps extend the understanding of how leaders at the top of an organization influence the NPD process and product innovation outcomes. Practical implications For practical implications to be more effective, CEOs focusing on product innovation should develop their skills and behaviors of transformational leadership to foster innovation culture and organizational learning, which in turn will affect product innovation performance. Originality/value This study makes a contribution to the literature by filling the research gaps proposed by several prior studies and offering a theoretical framework of the relationship between CEO transformational leadership and product innovation performance.


Given the key role of organizational factors for improving firm’s innovation capability, the purpose of this study is to explore the level of influence of organizational factors namely transformational leadership (TL), human resource management (HRM) practice and collaborative culture on two aspects of organizational innovation capability namely product and process innovation. The paper has developed a proposal research model and applied Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test research hypotheses using data collected from 168 participants in 51 Vietnamese firms. The findings of this study confirm the significant impacts of key organizational factors on firm’s capabilities for product and process innovation. Especially, the empirical findings reveal that TL has a greater impact on process innovation. In contrast, collaborative culture has more significant influence on product innovation. The findings of this study have significantly contributed to increasing the insight of the link between key organizational factors and specific aspects of innovation capability. Moreover, it provides a specific and effective pathway for Vietnamese firms to pursuit and foster each specific aspect of organizational capability for innovation. PurposeThe main objective of this study is to identify reliable and valid performance dimensions for both the identification and quantification of logistics performance that continues its development in the academic literature.Design/methodology/approachQuantitative research approach was used in the scale development process. First, the logistical performance literature was analyzed in detail, and it was evaluated that the logistics performance consists mainly of logistics efficiency, logistics differentiation, logistics agility and logistics effectiveness dimensions. During the scale development process, opinions were obtained from academics, industry managers and pilot applications were carried out. For the implementation of the developed scale, a total of 108 companies engaged in logistics activities in Turkey were identified, and the developed scale was applied to 398 logistics professionals.FindingsA 28-item logistics performance scale has been developed based on the resource-based theory to measure totally five-dimensional performance. First, the three items under the logistics agility dimension were separated from this dimension as a result of the exploratory factor analysis, and it was understood that these items belong to the “logistics flexibility” dimension. The established structure was supported by confirmatory factor analysis. The reliability and validity of the scale are within the range of acceptable values.Research limitations/implicationsThe research data were collected from the Western Mediterranean region. The scale should be tested in different geographies.Originality/valueBy means of establishing a valid and reliable scale for logistics performance and its sub-dimensions, it is evaluated that this study will contribute to future research based on the measurement of logistics performance.

Objective: The article presents the analysis of measures and scales of product innovation performance adopted in studies on micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Methodology/approach: It is an exploratory and qualitative descriptive research. The methodology consists of a systematic bibliographic review, examining articles from the Capes database, published from 1990 to December 2020. Main results: The research identified 92 articles addressing product innovation performance. Objective measures (proxies) were used in 41 of them, while 51 adopted psychometric scales. Among the studies analyzed, 7 different psychometric scales were developed to measure product innovation performance in SMEs. Theoretical/methodological contributions: The growing research on the importance of innovation management in SMEs emphasizes the need to measure the performance of organizations’ actions to innovate. However, the measures adopted to assess product innovation performance still diverge regarding the form, involving different variables. This research’s findings intend to direct researchers to appropriated measures in studies involving SMEs. Relevance/originality: The concern on product innovation has grown in recent years especially due to the urgent need for innovation. In this context, it is crucial to expand the knowledge on tools to analyze product innovation performance. Social/management contributions: The article offers information and tools for SME managers to analyze the measurement of product innovation performance.

Leadership is considered as an important factor that influences product innovation performance. Contemporary global economies continuously strive to foster innovation and improvisation in their production is the demand of today’s global economy that organizations continuously bring innovation and improve their products. The purpose of present research is to find out that how transformational leadership linked to product innovation. Moreover, the study hypothesized that corporate entrepreneurship and human resource practices mediate the relationship of transformational leadership and product innovation performance. Present research is based on quantitative research design and 150 survey questionnaires were employed to collect data from Textile sector of Pakistan. To analyze data, WarPLS was used. The findings confirmed the hypotheses that the study contributes toward the theory of leadership by uncovering the impact of human resource practices in innovation. Moreover, the findings of our study show that transformational leadership positively influence product innovation performance. It implies that managers should improve their leadership style in order to encourage employees to take part in innovative activities. Other variables such as learning orientation and supervisory commitment can be investigated in future studies.

The main contribution of this paper is the development of the job-family incivility scale. This paper seeks to explore the complex inter-relationships between workplace incivility and family incivility dimensions of job-family incivility by examining the dynamic processes by which job-family incivility is initiated and sustained using a scale development approach. In doing so, the paper highlights the absence of valid and reliable measures that estimate the compound effect of workplace incivility and family incivility – referred to as job-family incivility. A scale development process introduced by Quazi et al. (2016) is presented and stages in the construction of the scale are discussed including measures of validity and reliability. The findings of the study demonstrate the validity and reliability of the job-family incivility scale developed by the current researchers. The main aims of this research are to emphasize the impact of workplace incivility and family incivility on the employees in the work environment, and to discuss the techniques that can be used to mitigate such detrimental activities.

This study focuses on the perceived quality of participatory event experiences by addressing the following question: What are the important aspects of the event experience? The aim of this research is to develop and refine a scale to measure the quality of the event experience for runners at a participatory event. The objective is to combine, apply, test, and refine the existing scales to increase our understanding of the perceived quality of events among amateur running athletes. Both affective and cognitive dimensions are included in the scale. Based on seven dimensions and 36 items, a formal scale development process is adopted. The data consist of 1,923 observations collected during a participatory event with approximately 60,000 registered participants. The seven-factor model, including immersion, surprise, participation, fun, social aspects, hedonic aspects, and service quality, was gradually revised in favor of a four-factor solution: service quality, hedonic aspects, fun, and immersion. As a result, 73.1% of the variance is extracted. This study contributes to a refined scale measuring the perceived event quality of participatory events. Service quality accounts for more than half of the variance extracted. Researchers should continue to develop research on the critical experiential dimensions in an event context. Furthermore, the links between the constructs need attention. The results suggest that event organizers should evaluate their events and event portfolios based on the scale and take actions to increase the perceived quality of these events.
