Strength and leak testing (AKA ‘hydrotesting’, and ‘pressure testing’) of pipeline projects remains a primary method of providing quality assurance on new pipeline construction, and for validating structural integrity of the as-built pipeline [1][2][3]. A myriad of regulations surround these activities to ensure soundness of the pipeline, security of the environment during and after the pressure testing operation, as well as personnel safety during these activities. CAN/CSA Z662-11 now includes important clauses to ensure that the pipeline designer/builder/operator consider the potential corrosive impacts of the pressure test media [4]. This paper briefly discusses some of the standard approaches used in the pipeline industry to address internal corrosion caused by pressure test mediums — which often vary according to the scope of the pipeline project (small versus large diameter, short versus very long pipelines) — as well as the rationale behind these different approaches. Case studies are presented to highlight the importance of considering pressure test medium corrosiveness. A practical strategy addressing the needs of long-distance transmission pipeline operators, involving a post-hydrotest inhibitor rinse, is presented.

How to control deformation and avoid resonance is the key to ensuring the safety of the super-long pipeline when it is floating in the sea. Based on the deformation warning value of pipeline prototype composite material obtained from laboratory tests, the raw water pipeline project in Tong’an Xiamen adopts wireless communication equipment to transmit data, supplemented by aerial photography technology to monitor and feedback the strain and vibration during the dynamic construction of long-distance pipeline floating transportation. Combined with dynamic construction, this monitoring method avoids excessive deformation and resonance of the steel pipeline during floating transportation, and prevents the destruction of the anticorrosive coating. The airtightness test after completion shows that the whole pipeline meets the acceptance requirements. The monitoring results show that the strain at the bent position of the pipeline is large in the process of floating transportation, and the jacking speed and position of the tugboats have an important influence on the deformation of the pipeline. The same type of project should focus on these aspects and timely feedback monitoring data. At the same time, the study also provides detailed strain, modal analysis and effective monitoring technology for the safety of offshore steel pipeline floating transportation.

The West-East gas pipeline project in Western China was as an example in the research work. Expert system platform was used as a basic tool. The typical model database systems of West-East gas pipeline project was built. On the base of collection, collation, comprehensive analysis of existing data, through a case study of a large number of landslides, the induced landslides and stability control factor were becoming clear. A landslide risk assessment criteria and evaluation index system was established. On this basis, through application of expert system method, a Expert system platform based landslide risk evaluation expert system about long-distance pipeline routes was developed. It also give a application example of this expert system.

Water hammer is one of the key factors that can cause accidents by the burst of pressure pipeline. Important features and related reasons of accidents caused by water hammer in long-distance water conveyance pipeline system were introduced, and protection measures were presented. An long-distant raw water conveyance pipeline project was taken as an example to study on the influence of protective effect by different placement schemes of air valves based on hydraulic transient simulation and analysis. Results shows that largest number of air valves does not reach the best and unreasonable placement of air valves might be the cause of an accident. It is critical to select the proper location of air valves, it is necessary to pay more attention on local hump in the front of pipeline near the pump and put exhaust valves instead of inlet valves at the back of pipeline (except some higher hump location).

Well monitoring system based on power line transmission information has low cost, can realize to span transformers through the area of long distance, as well as in remote areas does not exist blind area, the paper designs a kind of wells monitoring background management software based on the Labview. Due to the characteristics of well monitoring and power frequency communication technology, the labview reaches not only the data management, but also realizes to collect data for simulation and analysis of the channel. Wells monitoring background software based on labview not only realize data collection and management, but also realize the system equipment monitoring and debugging.

This paper summarizes the basic design of reinforced concrete segment for cross river shield tunnel in gas pipeline project, meanwhile discusses its assembly style and water-proof technique. One loop of shield tunnel is divided into six pieces of precast reinforced concrete segment which is assembled with screw bolt and stud. In addition, Waterproof technique such as self-waterproof of segment, elastic rubber gasket and water swelling rubber strip is used to ensure waterproof performance of shield tunnel. The presentation of this paper may provide guidance for the design of reinforced concrete segment for cross river shield tunnel.

Competition in the natural gas industry grows steadily. The demand for natural gas transportation has typically exceeded the capability of the existing natural gas pipelines within Canada for several years. Even though intense competition exists with producing and marketing natural gas, limited transportation options limits the business opportunities available for energy companies. This competitive spirit is driving the Alliance Pipeline Project. Once the pipeline is complete, producers will have an additional transportation option to move their products to Chicago, Illinois, which is emerging as an important business hub for natural gas marketing. Designing and constructing a natural gas pipeline in the late 1990’s will allow Alliance Pipeline Limited the ability to implement the latest technology into all aspects of the design.
