Populations of the fragilarioid diatom Synedropsis roundii are described from the phytoplankton of the Albufera of Valencia, a large and shallow eutrophic lagoon in the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The specimens collected are described and illustrated with light and scanning electron microscopy. This is the first documented record of this species since its description, and the first illustrated record of the genus in the Mediterranean region. The Albufera lagoon and the type locality of the species (Imboassica Lagoon, SE Brazil) are similar in some ecological features. The ecological and biogeographical implications of this finding are briefly discussed.

During a survey of the chrysophycean stomatocyst flora in some small pools on top of the Monte Lauro, the culminating point of the Hyblean Mountains in southwestern Sicily (Italy), a total of 38 morphotypes, including 11 new, has been observed. Thirty-two morphotypes are described herein based on scanning electron microscopy observations with an additional six morphotypes, only observed by light microscopy. These records improve our knowledge on the cyst flora in the Mediterranean region.

AbstractDuring the study on myxomycete species diversity in Bitsevsky Park (Moscow), a new to Russia species Trichia papillata Adamonytė was recorded. It is characterized by stipitate sporangia on well-defined striated stalks. Dehiscence by 6–8 well-defined small peridial plates. The main feature of the species is conspicuous dark warts on the peridium, composed of granular material. The warts are located in the centre of most peridium plates. The paper presents data on the ecological features and distribution of this species as well as iconography and illustrations of morphology, obtained using light and scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract In November 2014 and May 2015, a total of 44 specimens of the South American silver croaker Plagioscion squamosissimus were collected: 30 in Marajó Bay and 14 in the Tapajós River, state of Pará, Brazil. The aim was to investigate the presence of anisakid nematodes and determine their parasitism indices and sites of infection, because of their importance regarding health inspection. Sixty-nine Anisakis sp. larvae were found; among them, 16 larvae in seven fish collected in Marajó Bay and 53 larvae in four fish in the Tapajós River. The parasitism indices of the nematodes collected from the fish in Marajó Bay comprised prevalence (P) of 23%, mean infection intensity (MI) of 2.28, mean abundance (MA) of 0.53, range of infection (RI) of 1-4, and infection site (IS) in the mesentery. The fish from the Tapajós River showed P = 28%, MI = 13.2, MA = 3.8, RI = 1-22, and IS = mesentery and intestine. To assist in taxonomic identification, images of the specimens obtained through optical microscopy with Nomarski's interferential contrast system and scanning electron microscopy were used. This is the first record of Anisakis sp. parasitizing P. squamosissimus.

Necropsy on 15 specimens of white-tufted grebe, Rollandiarolland, caught in the Mar Chiquita and Chascomús lagoons (Buenos Aires province), revealed the presence of Contracaecumovale (Linstow, 1907). This nematode shows a marked specificity for podicipediform birds. The specimens were identified from morphological study on features such as cephalic and esophageal structures and caudal papillae, using both optical and scanning electron microscopy. This is the first record of C. ovale parasitizing R. rolland in Argentina.

AbstractGongylonema neoplasticum was identified in the oesophagus of 14 wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) from Portugal. This is the first record of Gongylonema neoplasticum in a naturally infected lagomorph species in Europe. This paper presents the most relevant measurements of adult worms and some of their surface features seen by scanning electron microscopy. Epidemiological aspects of G. neoplasticum such as geographical distribution, host spectrum and biological features are discussed.

AbstractA new species of awl nematode, Dolichodorus mediterraneus sp. n., is described from southern Spain. The new species is described and illustrated by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy studies from specimens collected in a sandy soil around roots of cork oak (Quercus suber L.) from Hato Raton, Aznalcázar (Seville), southern Spain. Dolichodorus mediterraneus sp. n. is characterised by a prominent, rounded, lip region, which is offset from the body and has four to six very fine annuli; lateral fields areolated with three lines, ending posterior to anus level; tail 72-122 μm long, abruptly tapering to an acuminate, often spicate, terminus; tail projection 51-79 μ m long; spicules ventrally arcuate, 33-42 μm long; gubernaculum slightly ventrally curved, 14-22 μm long. Scanning electron microscopy observations showed a similar en face pattern to other Dolichodorus spp. Molecular data from the ribosomal large subunit D2-D3 expansion segment of 28S rDNA from paratypes yielded a single fragment of approximately 800 bp. This is the first record of the genus Dolichodorus in Spain and only the second in Europe. A key to species is provided.

AbstractThis is the first record of the nematode parasite Schulzia travassosi (Trichostrongylina, Molineidae) in two Argentinean amphibians, Leptodactylus bufonius and Rhinella major, collected in two localities of the Chaco region, Las Lomitas (Formosa Province) and Taco Pozo (Chaco Province). The species was observed using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and compared with previous studies of Paraguayan specimens. Regarding metric characters, the measurements found in Argentinean specimens generally did not differ from those of Paraguayan specimens; some differences were observed in the total length of males and females (some longer and some shorter than Paraguayan specimens), length of the oesophagus (in almost all specimens shorter than in Paraguayan ones) and position of the vulva (nearer to posterior end in Argentinean specimens). The branches and sphincter of ovejector are slightly longer than in Paraguayan female specimens. In males, ray 4 is almost the same length as rays 2, 3 and 5, 6. Cephalic end, cephalic vesicle, synlophe and vulvar depression were viewed under SEM. Schulzia melanostictusi Chopra, Shing and Kumar, 1986 is reassigned as Oswaldocruzia melanostictusi (Chopra, Shing and Kumar, 1986) nov. comb.

We identified nine species of phylactolaemate bryozoans collected from ponds and dams on Okinawa Island, Japan. This is the first report on freshwater bryozoans from Okinawa and includes the first record of Plumatella javanica from Japan. Phylactolaemate species were identified on the basis of colony and statoblast morphology and are illustrated by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We detected two new plumatellid species that, like Plumatella minuta and Plumatella vorstmani, have a transparent, weakly chitinized colony and hypertubercles on the floatoblast fenestra. A previous molecular study showed these four species to form a clade separate from Plumatella and Hyalinella. We here establish the new genus Rumarcanella to accommodate these species and describe Rumarcanella gusuku n. sp. and R. yanbaruensis n. sp. We discuss the dispersal of bryozoans to and from Japan by birds carrying statoblasts and provide a key to the Phylactolaemata of Japan.

Abstract Pentastomids are parasites that infect respiratory cavities of vertebrates, they are pretty common but poorly known in wildlife veterinary. A Bothrops asper snake (Garman, 1884) was captured in the Caribbean region of Costa Rica and had its lung infested with pentastomids, identified as ca Porocephalus clavatus (Wyman, 1845). This represents the first record of Porocephalus (Humboldt, 1812) on B. asper as well as P. cf. clavatus in Costa Rica. Further studies are needed to clarify their taxonomic position, images and scanning electron microscopy photographs (SEM) of the specimens are given.

The floral development of Daviesia cordata Smith is studied by the use of scanning electron microscopy. This is the first study of a member of Mirbelieae. Although organ initiation in Papilionoideae is said to be almost uniformly unidirectional from the abaxial to the adaxial side, the presented floral development shows striking differences from this mode. Sepals, petals and the antepetalous stamens are initiated in simultaneous whorls, which is seen as a consequence of harmonisation of the plastochrons within the whorls. The antesepalous stamens are initiated unidirectional from the adaxial to the abaxial side, which is the reversed direction of the common mode of Papilionoideae. This is the first record of reversed unidirectionality in Papilionoideae, which can be linked with isolated findings in Caesalpinioideae and Mimosoideae. Concerning developmental aspects, the results seem to link the papilionoid flower closer to those of Caesalpinioideae and Mimosoideae. Further developmental studies are necessary to broaden the data matrix for a detailed phylogenetic analysis.
