The F1000Research publishing platform offers the opportunity to launch themed article collections as a part of its dynamic publication environment. The idea of article collections is further expanded through the generation of publication channels that focus on specific scientific areas or disciplines. This editorial introduces the Chemical Information Science channel of F1000Research designed to collate high-quality publications and foster a culture of open peer review. Articles will be selected by guest editor(s) and a group of experts, the channel Editorial Board, and subjected to open peer review.

The Chemical Information Science Gateway (CISG) of F1000Research was originally conceptualized as a forum for high-quality publications in chemical information science (CIS) including chemoinformatics. Adding a publication venue with open access and open peer review to the CIS field was a prime motivation for the introduction of CISG, aiming to support open science in this area. Herein, the CISG concept is revisited and the development of the gateway over the past four years is reviewed. In addition, opportunities are discussed to better position CISG within the publication spectrum of F1000Research and further increase its visibility and attractiveness for scientific contributions.

On behalf of the editorial board and the entire value chain including authors, reviewers, and staff, I am delighted to present the Volume 9 Number 3 edition of the of the African Journal of Gender, Society and Development (AJGSD). This is the last issue for 2020 and marks the end of my first year as guest editor. It is therefore a time of reflection and an opportunity to thank all the people who have contributed in one way or another to the success of the journal over the year. First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge and appreciate the authors who have continued to display their unwavering support to the journal with an ever-increasing rate of high-quality submissions. I say a big thank you to all our esteemed authors and hope they will continue to choose AJGSD as their favored place of publication.

Broadly defined, chemical information science (CIS) covers chemical structure and data analysis including biological activity data as well as processing, organization, and retrieval of any form of chemical information. The CIS Gateway (CISG) of F1000Research was created to communicate research involving the entire spectrum of chemical information, including chem(o)informatics. CISG provides a forum for high-quality publications and a meaningful alternative to conventional journals. This gateway is supported by leading experts in the field recognizing the need for open science and a flexible publication platform enabling off-the-beaten path contributions. This editorial aims to further rationalize the scope of CISG, position it within its scientific environment, and open it up to a wider audience. Chemical information science is an interdisciplinary field with high potential to interface with experimental work.

I am very honored to be the new Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society, JINS, beginning in January 2005. It is a daunting task to follow in Dr. Grant's footsteps. He has done a stellar job of developing this journal from its conception to its current status, and the statistics that he presents tell only part of the story. He appropriately recognizes all of the help he has received, but JINS' success is largely due to his vision, organization, innovation, and leadership. In order to concretely recognize that vision and its continuing influence on JINS, Dr. Grant's name will be listed on the cover of JINS as its Founding Editor. He had the vision to develop a journal that “fits” the INS from the standpoint of its breadth, multidisciplinary contributions, and scientific rigor. He selected and has led an impressive group of senior editors with expertise in a variety of areas, and these editors have provided a level of editorial expertise that would not be possible with a single Editor-in-Chief. Dr. Grant has also brought electronic submission and review to JINS. Web-based submission began August 1. Even though electronic submission and review should facilitate logistics, the quality of JINS will still be most dependent on high quality peer review provided by the Editorial Board and a large group of dedicated reviewers.

As chemical information evolves, impacting many chemistry areas, effective ways to disseminate results by the scientific community are also changing. Thus, publication schemes adapt to meet the needs of researchers across disciplines to share high-quality data, information, and knowledge. Since 2015, the F1000Research Chemical Information Science (CIS) gateway has offered an open and unique model to disseminate science at the interface of chemoinformatics, bioinformatics, and several other informatic-related disciplines. In response to the evolution of chemical information science, the F1000Research CIS gateway has incorporated new members to the advisory board. It is also reinforcing and expanding the gateway areas with a particular focus on machine learning and metabolomics. The range of available article types, availability of data, exposure within complementary multidisciplinary F1000Research gateways, and indexing in major bibliographic databases increases the visibility of all contributions. As part of progressing open science in this field, we look forward to your high-quality contributions to the CIS gateway.

Compared to the traditional anonymous peer review process, open post-publication peer review provides additional opportunities -and challenges- for reviewers to judge scientific studies. In this editorial, we comment on the open peer review culture and provide some guidance for reviewers of manuscripts submitted to the Chemical Information Science channel of F1000Research.
