Agricultural systems are often considered by ecologists as disturbed, depauperate, and evolutionarily recent. But tropical rice agro-ecosystem is one exception due to its ecological complexity resulted by the long ecological complexity resulted by the long ecological history and wide geographical distribution. Rice nursery is very similar to natural grassland and offers a wide scope for studying the biodiversity due to the presence of arthropod fauna. A survey was conducted in five rice nursery fields in the same period in three villages of two districts of the north eastern zone of Tamil Nadu: Budur, Kavarapettai and Narasingapuram of Tiruvallur district, and Kavur and Malaiyambakkam of Kancheepuram district during Sornavari season,2003(April to August). The rice cultivar was uniformly ADT 43, a short duration variety. No chemical pesticide was applied in the nursery fields and the seedlings were of uniform age. Fifty double sweep net samples were taken to study arthropod diversity. The specimens sorted out were grouped into three guilds, viz., pests, entomophages and neutrals, and their relative abundance was worked out. . The overall observations revealed that a wide range of arthropod fauna were present in the rice nursery fields. The neutrals were the most dominant guilds in four out of five locations. The relative abundance range from 30.22 to 67.13% .This guild was followed by the pests, which ranged from 17.5 to 48.58%. The abundance of entomophages ranged from 13.32 to 24.36%. Among the locations, the maximum relative abundance of pest and entomophage guilds was observed in Narasingapuram. The maximum relative abundance of neutrals was observed in Budur. The green leaf hopper, white flies, white-bat plant hopper, grass hoppers and trips were the major pests. The pre dominant entomophages were the spiders, parasitic hymenoptera and ground beetles. Dipteran flies and hydrophilids were the pre dominant neutrals observed. It may be concluded that rice nursery field supports a wide range of arthropods. The neutrals help in the buildup of carnivorous (entomophages), which ultimately check the pest population.

Casuarina equisetifolia is an exotic, fast growing, multipurpose tree species grown in Tamil Nadu. Altogether, about 40 species of insects have been recorded on C. equisetifolia in Tamil Nadu State. Among them, the bark eating caterpillar, Indarbela quadrinotata is considered as the most destructive pest in plantations. Wide variation in the infestation levels of bark eating caterpillar was noticed in Casuarina plantations grown under four agro-climatic zones of Tamil Nadu; the Cauvery Delta Zone showed highest intensity of attack, followed by the North Eastern Zone and the Southern Zone in the decreasing order of infestation, while the High Rainfall Zone was not affected by the pest. Plantations of younger age suffered from higher levels of infestation, compared to that of older ones. Among the climatological parameters, the minimum temperature had significant positive correlation with the pest infestation. Apart from the naturally occurring entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana, the botanical formulations such as Melia azedarach seed kernel extract (5%), Pongamia pinnata seed oil (5%), Hydnocarpus pentandra seed oil (10,000 ppm) and Neem oil (5%) were found to be very effective in managing the pest under field condition.

<p>Natural resources competition between food and cash crops is a current challenge in many developing countries that are experiencing both lack of food availability and a fast growing economy, such as India. Silk industry has always been significant for the Indian economy since it provides high profits and employment. Almost 90% of the world commercial silk production is mulberry silk. Recently, to the aim of increasing silk production in the Country, the Central Silk Board of the Indian Ministry of Textile and the Indian Space Research Organization have identified potential suitable areas for mulberry cultivation through horizontal expansion in wastelands. Here, taking India as a case study, we analyse if the current cultivation of mulberry silk and the horizontal expansion of moriculture is environmentally sustainable. To this end, using the present land cover, we use a dynamic spatially distributed crop water balance model evaluating mulberry water requirement, the green and blue water provision and analysing both water scarcity at pixel scale and the impact of present and future moriculture on its increase.</p><p>Results show in the baseline scenario some States (e.g. West Bengal, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana) suitable for mulberry horizontal expansion already experiencing water scarcity conditions and high prevalence of malnutrition that will be exacerbated, both on yearly and monthly scale, by increasing moriculture. Other States (i.e. Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland) show Mulberry expansion as the triggering factor of water scarcity condition. Particularly affected by water scarcity will be the North-Eastern Indian districts where potential mulberry areas are clustered.</p><p>The analysis of the population exposure to water scarcity due to mulberry horizontal expansion shows 11 million people potentially affected in India, where more than 65% living in the North-Eastern States. Compared to the total North-Eastern Region inhabitants, affected population accounts for more than the 15%.</p>

In phase B1, and very prominently – in phase B2 of the Roman Period, tribal groups of the north-eastern territories of the Przeworsk culture displayed a number of characteristic regional elements. These elements are mostly seen in female outfits that become much richer and more varied than elsewhere within the Przeworsk culture territory. The features specific for the Eastern Przeworsk Zone, like e.g., a very high frequency of dress elements made of copper alloys, would be largely the effect of mutual relations of these people with communities of the Wielbark culture from Eastern Pomerania. Though outwardly only ethnographic, this specificity of the material culture may have deeper underlying causes, since starting with phase B1, there is evidence of two basic types of Eastern Przeworsk cemeteries. In both cases, the women’s grave furnishings display general Eastern Przeworsk characteristics. In cemeteries of the first group weapon graves disappear already in early phase B1. These cemeteries fell out of use before the end of phase B2 and reflect the full, or nearly full withdrawal of the ‘Przeworsk’ community from that area. The second group form Przeworsk cemeteries with ‘standard’ weapon graves. From phase B2/C1 on, the Wielbark culture newcomers continued to use many of these cemeteries. Many of them were then continuously used from phase B2/C1 by the Wielbark culture newcomers. It appears that a part of the Przeworsk population from the Eastern Zone probably joined Gothic (Wielbark) tribes then moving south. Recently many brooches recognized traditionally as definitely ethnographic markers of the Przeworsk culture (types Almgren 43 and Almgren 129) have been registered in the western provinces of nowadays Ukraine. However, these finds are already much more numerous than those from the ‘core’ territory of the Przeworsk culture – for the time being, this phenomenon seems to be inexplicable.

Field experiments were conducted for two years during 2017 and 2018 at Rice Research Station, Tirur to optimize nitrogen fertilizer requirement for pre-release rice cultures TM10085, TM 07335, TM 07030 along with the check variety CO51. The trial was conducted in split plot design with three replications and the main plot consisted of three pre-released rice cultures along with one check variety. The sub plot consisted of three fertilizers doses viz., 150-50-50 NPK kg/ha, 175-50- 50 NPK kg/ha and 125-50-50 NPK kg/ha. In this experiment, the rice culture TM10085, along with fertilizer application of 150-50-50 NPK kg/ha recorded the highest grain yield of 5505 kg/ha during 2018. This treatment also registered highest growth, yield attributes and benefit cost ratio in Tirur, Tiruvallur district of North Eastern Zone, Tamil Nadu.

La Functional Urban Area (FUA) di Milano è un’area densamente popolata (2.254.263 abitanti) dove l’approvvigionamento idrico è garantito esclusivamente mediante prelievi idrici sotterranei. Per questa ragione la protezione della qualità delle falde rientra tra le priorità delle politiche ambientali di Regione Lombardia. Recentemente è stato avviato un programma di studi ed interventi aventi lo scopo d’individuare i principali plumes di contaminazione da solventi clorurati distinguendone l’impatto da quello legato all’inquinamento diffuso. In questo articolo si presenta il modello di flusso sviluppato per il settore NE della FUA di Milano, settore utilizzato quale area pilota per sviluppare e testare una nuova metodologia che combina statistica e modellistica al fine di distinguere il contributo delle fonti di contaminazione puntuale rispetto a quelle diffuse.

Barnacles are common epibionts on a wide range of marine organisms, including turtles. Chelonibia testudinaria is a successful epibiotic barnacle species, and mainly turtles are responsible for their wide range dispersal. In the present study, the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene haplotypes of C. testudinaria from Caretta caretta hosts were evaluated. The samples were collected from three dead C. caretta turtle carapaces in 2014 from the Middle East Technical University, Institute of Marine Sciences coastline. Results were also compared with those samples submitted to databases (NCBI and BOLD-system, 139 in total). By comparison, three clades were recorded like previous studies: the Atlantic-Mediterranean clade (Clade-α), the IndianPacific Ocean clade (Clade-β), and Magdalena Bay (Eastern Pacific- Clade-) clade; all samples collected from Turkish shores clustered in the Atlantic-Mediterranean group (Clade-α). The gene flow between the three clades was deficient and highly significant (0.02, 0.03, and 0.03, respectively). According to network age estimation, present study samples’ clade (Clade-α) diverged from the Clade-β approximately 200 kya (SDs=0.22, SDy=4402.90) and Clade- 130 kya (SDs=0.17, SDy=3494.55). In the present study, eight haplotypes were observed in total, two of which were specific to the region.

Developmental issues of the North-Eastern States of India cannot be studied inisolation without accounting for the varied politico-socio-economic and institutional factors. This study covers a wide range of the socio-political issues and developmental gaps in the North-Eastern Region (NER) of India. It presents a broader picture and gives an understanding of the issues of governance and development prevailing in this region. Many issues pertain to paucity of developmental outcomes, ethnicity, demand for statehood, insurgency, absence of rule of law, corruption and so on, suggesting state’s ineffectiveness and people’s incompetence to take development to the front stage. An effort has also been made to trace the literature that deals with these issues.
