Social Wasps (Vespidae: Polistinae) in a Dense Ombrophilous Amazon Forest in the Maranhão State, Brazil Abstract. Social wasps are a high species richness group and very common in Amazonian areas. Despite this, no study have been made in the amazonian forest on the state of Maranhão and only 58 species of social wasps are registered for this state. This paper presents data about the social wasps fauna of Gurupi Biological Reserve, characterized as an ombrophylous broadleaf forest located in the northwest Amazon of Maranhão. The collect and traps installation (Malaise trap, suspended trap, light traps and fruit attractive trap) occurred between January 2010 and May 2011, with a total of 63 sample days. We collected 384 specimens in the Biological Reserve of Gurupi, were obtained social wasps belonging to Epiponini and Polistini, allocated to 12 genera and 38 species. Polybia have the largest number of species (14), followed by Agelaia (six species) and Apoica (four species). Fourteen species are first records for the state of Maranhão, increasing, thus, for 72 species with confirmed records occurrence to Maranhão.

Abstract:  This text analyzes two super-8 films, made in the 1970’s by the brazilian photographer and poet Euvaldo Macedo Filho, born in the state of Bahia, as documental language. At first, the discussion focus on the images circulating during that period, which were used on the display of social practices, changing spaces of Sao Francisco river, mainly at navigation. Moreover, the construction of two short movies is problematize through the technology practices of the artist and the insertion of his documental regard at the social issues of its moment. These images were part of an intentional project of memory and social criticism of events, turning themselves into a dialectical point for society observation.

Contemporary document research involves the need to use the latest technologies and analytical techniques that provide the most complete possible knowledge of contemporary issues and methods of document research. Documents are used to record legal actions and events of legal significance. By their essence, they are therefore closely related to the sphere of rights and obligations of a specific person or institution. Crimes against documents pose a threat to the proper functioning of the state and thus the development of every enterprise. They affect, directly or indirectly, the misallocation of financial resources at the disposal of an enterprise. Forging documents may be aimed at obtaining unauthorized access to specific sources of financing, influencing key management decisions made in the company, or, finally, concealing inconvenient facts. On the other hand, the social harm suffered as a result of forging documents of evidence significance in tax matters may be enormous. For this reason, it is necessary to deepen the knowledge of the dynamics characterizing document forgery in the sphere of economic activity in order for the state to activate mechanisms able to prevent this type of crime. The article describes the issues of selected tax frauds in Italy with the use of accounting documents.

Conservation Units are an important tool for the Brazilian biota protection. However, various taxa, including the social wasps, are undersampled or are unknown in these areas. Therefore, our study aimed to assess the social wasp richness and distribution in the Conservation Units in Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil. The social wasps were sampled between 2015 and 2019 in the Ritápolis National Forest (FLONA Ritápolis), in the Alto-Montana Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN Alto-Montana), in the Rio Machado Basin State Environmental Protection Area (APA Rio Machado) and in the Serra de São José Environmental Protection Area (APA Serra de São José), using two different sampling methodologies. Fourteen species were sampled for FLONA Ritápolis, 10 for RPPN Alto-Montana, 35 for APA Rio Machado and 19 for APA Serra de São José. Ninety-six social wasp species of the known richness in Minas Gerais were sampled in 14 Conservation Units, representing 90% of the fauna of the state. Thirty-four species are exclusive to these areas, with emphasis on the Rio Doce State Park, the Serra do Papagaio State Park, the Pandeiros River Wildlife Regufe and the APA Rio Machado. Most of the Conservation Units sampled are in the Atlantic Forest areas, but further efforts are needed in this biome, because of its accelerated destruction. There is still an urgent need for more studies in the Cerrado and Caatinga areas in the state, especially in Conservation Units.

Some neotropical social wasps are associated with certain vertebrates and other insects, like ants. These interactions have been reported for decades, but little is known about these associations in the caatinga biome. This study describes the first association record between the nests of Polybia rejecta wasps and Azteca chartifex ants in the caatinga of Piauí state and presents new records for Amazonas. This study supports the hypothesis that the association between the social wasps P. rejecta and A. chartifex ants is more common than previously documented. This new finding reinforces this association between different species not only for the Amazon and atlantic forest, but also for the caatinga biome.

Information is presented concerning specimen records of polistine social wasps in the state of Amapá, Brazil, in the years from 1904 to 2016, mainly coming from the IEPA and MPEG collections. Spatial distribution of records and of the total collecting effort were analyzed with respect to general landscape aspects of the region, such as vegetation types, hydrography, road infrastructure and the state network of conservation unities. The number of social wasp species registered for Amapá is now 144, with 17 new records of species for the Guiana Shield, and nine species not yet described. Seventeen genera are known to occur in the region, with Mischocyttarus de Saussure and Polybia Lepeletier being richer in species.

The objective of this chapter is to describe the state of the social network of researchers who publish in scientific journals with the topic “hunger.” To do this, a search is made in the Isi Web of Knowledge database, and 514 documents are located. Using the authors who publish an article and the authors cited in the bibliography, the social network of researchers is designed, and later, by means of network analysis techniques, the main characteristics of the social network are analyzed. The results obtained show who the researchers are, the scientific journals, and the most relevant topics related to the topic “hunger.”

Ametrida centurio Gray, 1847 is a small fruit-eating bat endemic to the Neotropics. In Brazil, its known distribution is limited to the Amazon basin. We report the first record of A. centurio in the Atlantic Forest and extend its distribution in approximately 1,500 km from the previously known easternmost locality. The record was made in the Guaribas Biological Reserve, located in the state of Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. We intended to evaluate whether this record is accidental or might correspond to an emerging pattern for northeastern Brazil’s canopy.

This chapter explores Kant’s concept of an ethical community. It considers at length an analogy made in the Religion between the ethical state of nature—which is left behind once human beings enter the ethical community—and the state of nature in a juridico-civil context. This analogy ultimately leads to the conclusion that the central task of the ethical community is to help its members adjudicate disagreements about the social aims appropriate to good life conduct. It is further explained why the ethical community should be centered on a “historical” or “ecclesiastical faith,” as it is shown that such a community can promote moral knowledge, self-understanding, and interpersonal communication. How Kant’s account of the highest good relates to the ethical community is also considered, as are questions regarding how norms of pluralism and inclusivity are adopted by the ethical community.
