Abstract The authors have analyzed invention patents in the Russian oil and gas sector (OGS) based on a knowledge database complexity index they designed for this purpose. The index takes into account the subclasses and sections of international patent classification (IPC) used in the patents. It has been demonstrated that opportunities for creating breakthrough technologies and radical innovations mostly arise within giant multinational oil and gas field service companies (e.g. Halliburton, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes). At the same time, Russian oil and service companies are noticeably lagging behind the foreign players and Russian actors in the sphere of science and education. The conducted analysis of the sectoral knowledge database revealed several significant risks for the development of the Russian OGS along the innovative trajectory. The risks (relative to the invention patents) arise from inadequate opportunities for creating breakthrough technologies.

This article describes the design and application of a computer-based system for simultaneously teaching Korean, English and Japanese languages in a classroom setting using knowledge visualization techniques to show the relationships between vocabularies, grammars and meanings. The system consists of a knowledge database of Korean, English, and Japanese which is then uploaded into the teaching module. Visualizations of this information in the form of knowledge maps based upon generally accepted rules of knowledge map can then be displayed and contrasted using the system interface to enter user queries. The system is then tested in a blended classroom of native Korean speakers. Data on student learning experiences are then gathered by means of a questionnaire and analyzed in order to assess the overall success of knowledge acquisition in this setting. Our findings show that this system evokes a personal initiative in the learning process, facilitates communication between teachers and learners, and supports the rapid acquisition of multilingual knowledge.

Following a design science research approach, this study proposes a new self-service oriented BI architecture in order to address this gap. Starting from an in-depth literature review, an initial model was developed and improved by qualitative data analysis from interviews with 18 BI and IT specialists form companies across different industries. The proposed architecture model demonstrates the interaction between introduced self-service elements with each other and with traditional BI components. For example, we look at the integration of collaboration rooms and a self-learning knowledge database that aims to be a source for a report recommender. The article presents topical news on intelligent transport systems policy, strategy, and linked activities in the Czech Republic. It introduces historical background, relation to other documents, and current development in 2021. The Strategy of Development of Intelligent Transport Systems 2021-2027 with a View to 2050 (in force since January 2021) is the core document. The strategy is introduced by its context, methodology and structure of the content. Focus on coming years is included in this article, too: essential support for the ITS policy brings the online ITS Library (https://www.its-knihovna.cz), a knowledge database, described here with its certain parts and space for supportive tools. The tools enable to manage information on implementation progress, selected progress indicators and monitoring of ITS data quality, expressed by data conformance testing and publishing. The conclusion chapter gives a general overview on implementation of the Strategy and the ITS Library in the future.

The design of mechatronic devices is a demanding process not only in terms of the time required but also of the demands placed on the knowledge and experience of development workers. The aim of this research and development was to create suitable procedures, algorithms, and databases of 3D models, with the help of which could this process be significantly shortened and simplified. The results of the development are a software tool for the design of electric drive units, procedures for creating 3D models with the possibility of using the SolidWorks software API, methods for automating the creation of assemblies of 3D models and a description of the knowledge database in which various data and algorithms are stored. The benefits of the proposed procedures, the Drive Picker software tool, and the knowledge database, are demonstrated on the design of a robotic arm with 5 degrees of freedom. Despite the complexity of the preparation of documents needed, it turns out that the chosen approach can significantly speed up and simplify the design of mechatronic devices.

AbstractHuman brain atlas development is predominantly research-oriented and the use of atlases in clinical practice is limited. Here I introduce a new definition of a reference human brain atlas that serves education, research and clinical applications, and is extendable by its user. Subsequently, an architecture of a multi-purpose, user-extendable reference human brain atlas is proposed and its implementation discussed. The human brain atlas is defined as a vehicle to gather, present, use, share, and discover knowledge about the human brain with highly organized content, tools enabling a wide range of its applications, massive and heterogeneous knowledge database, and means for content and knowledge growing by its users. The proposed architecture determines major components of the atlas, their mutual relationships, and functional roles. It contains four functional units, core cerebral models, knowledge database, research and clinical data input and conversion, and toolkit (supporting processing, content extension, atlas individualization, navigation, exploration, and display), all united by a user interface. Each unit is described in terms of its function, component modules and sub-modules, data handling, and implementation aspects. This novel architecture supports brain knowledge gathering, presentation, use, sharing, and discovery and is broadly applicable and useful in student- and educator-oriented neuroeducation for knowledge presentation and communication, research for knowledge acquisition, aggregation and discovery, and clinical applications in decision making support for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and prediction. It establishes a backbone for designing and developing new, multi-purpose and user-extendable brain atlas platforms, serving as a potential standard across labs, hospitals, and medical schools.

Very often, constructors and designers of intelligent building and building automation systems have a choice: to create a compact system with a limited configuration and modifying the system’s behavior possibilities or provide a fully configurable solution at the expense of introducing a full SCADA system equipped with an additional knowledge database and inference system equipped with learning capabilities. In the presented work, we show that there is a third solution. Using a multilayer control system composed of programmable FPGAs, small PCs, and cloud computing resources, we can design and implement a fully configurable intelligent control system for the building’s heating. Our solution combines the compactness of the structure and the ease of installation and assembly.

There are limited studies on the normal values of eye protrusion in Iran. Systematic efforts to provide acceptable normal exophthalmometry values for Iranian population are required for a proper approach to orbital diseases. English and Farsi language publications in PubMed, the ISI Web of Knowledge database, Iranian SID, and Iran Medex were searched using the following keywords: “proptosis”, “eye protrusion”, “exophthalmous”, “Hertel exophthalmometer” and “Iran”. Four articles from 1995 to 2010 were found and included in the meta-analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using the Metan command within Stata 15.0 software. It included 3,696 subjects in whom the average eye protrusion was 16.5 mm (95% CI: 15.1–17.8) in men and 16.2 mm (95% CI: 14.6–17.7) in women (P = 0.5). Mean left and right eye protrusion were 16.3 (95% CI: 14.7–18.1) and 16.4 mm (95% CI: 14.8–17.7), (P = 0.3), respectively. While Iranian teenagers (13–19 years old) showed a mean value of 17.1 mm (95% CI: 15.0–19.1), older age group (≥20 years) showed a lower mean eye protrusion of 16.3 mm (95% CI: 14.8–17.7). Considering the two standard deviations, the highest normal value of eye protrusion in Iranian population is 20.1 mm. In conclusion, Iranian normal eye protrusion values were higher than Asians and lower than Caucasians.

The carabids of the tribe Platynini from the southern Levant (Egypt: Sinai Peninsula, Israel, Jordan) and adjacent regions of Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia are reviewed in terms of species taxonomy, ecological, distributional traits, and conservation biology. In addition to a classical dichotomous identification key to the 14 species of the region, identification tools are made freely available via the Xper3 knowledge database “Platynini, southern Levant”. Besides an interactive identification key, a matrix with character states for the species and single access identification keys are available. A database including all available records from the southern Levant is also provided. First faunistic records are recorded for Anchomenus dorsalis infuscatus from Sinai (Egypt), Olisthopus fuscatus from Lebanon and Iraq, and for O. glabricollis from Iraq. Threatened species are discussed, also with regard to the reasons of their decline. The majority of species lives in wetlands, especially on the shore of winter ponds and streams, which have been extremely degraded in the last decades.
