Some neotropical social wasps are associated with certain vertebrates and other insects, like ants. These interactions have been reported for decades, but little is known about these associations in the caatinga biome. This study describes the first association record between the nests of Polybia rejecta wasps and Azteca chartifex ants in the caatinga of Piauí state and presents new records for Amazonas. This study supports the hypothesis that the association between the social wasps P. rejecta and A. chartifex ants is more common than previously documented. This new finding reinforces this association between different species not only for the Amazon and atlantic forest, but also for the caatinga biome.

The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus; Carnivora, Canidae) is the South America's largest canid, typically occurring in open areas of Cerrado, Chaco and Pampa. Its geographical distribution is historically limited to the north by the Amazon forest, and to the northeast by the Caatinga and Atlantic Forest biomes. However, recent studies have reported that its occurrence has recently been expanded to the boundaries of its distribution range. In this study, we presented 22 records of the maned wolf for the Amazon biome, including six records from gray literature, six records of scientific articles from indexed journals and 10 new records, expanding the northwest limit of its geographical range in 51,178.78 km². The presence of the maned wolf in protected and unprotected areas of the Amazon biome, as reported in this study, can play a complementary role in the conservation of species, since its historically boundaries are becoming increasingly permeable.

As vespas sociais constituem um grupo com elevada riqueza de espécies e muito comum em áreas amazônicas. Apesar disto, nenhum trabalho foi realizado na Amazônia Maranhense e apenas 58 espécies de vespas sociais são registradas para o estado do Maranhão. O presente trabalho apresenta dados faunísticos referentes às vespas sociais da Reserva Biológica do Gurupi, caracterizada por ser uma floresta ombrófila latifoliada amazônica localizada no noroeste do Maranhão. As coletas e instalação de armadilhas (Malaise do tipo Gressitt & Gressitt, armadilha suspensa, armadilha luminosa, armadilha atrativa com isca de fruta) ocorreram entre janeiro de 2010 e maio de 2011, totalizando 63 dias amostrados. Para a Reserva Biológica do Gurupi foram obtidos 384 espécimes de vespas sociais pertencentes a Epiponini e Polistini, alocados em 12 gêneros e 38 espécies. Polybia destacou-se por apresentar o maior número de espécies (14), seguido de Agelaia (seis espécies) e Apoica (quatro espécies). Quatorze espécies são registradas pela primeira vez para o estado do Maranhão, aumentando, desta forma, para 72 espécies com registros confirmados para o estado. Social Wasps (Vespidae: Polistinae) in a Dense Ombrophilous Amazon Forest in the Maranhão State, Brazil Abstract. Social wasps are a high species richness group and very common in Amazonian areas. Despite this, no study have been made in the amazonian forest on the state of Maranhão and only 58 species of social wasps are registered for this state. This paper presents data about the social wasps fauna of Gurupi Biological Reserve, characterized as an ombrophylous broadleaf forest located in the northwest Amazon of Maranhão. The collect and traps installation (Malaise trap, suspended trap, light traps and fruit attractive trap) occurred between January 2010 and May 2011, with a total of 63 sample days. We collected 384 specimens in the Biological Reserve of Gurupi, were obtained social wasps belonging to Epiponini and Polistini, allocated to 12 genera and 38 species. Polybia have the largest number of species (14), followed by Agelaia (six species) and Apoica (four species). Fourteen species are first records for the state of Maranhão, increasing, thus, for 72 species with confirmed records occurrence to Maranhão.

Social wasps are broadly distributed in Brazil, and their distribution is closely related to local plant composition. However, only a few studies on the diversity of these insects have been carried out in northeastern Brazil, and in Caatinga Biome the diversity is probably underestimated due to the lack of inventories for the region. Aiming at advancing the knowledge about the wasp fauna, we carried out this study from October 2005 to September 2006 in Ibipeba, northeastern Brazil. We collected 172 wasps of five genera and eight species, and recorded Polybia ruficeps Schrottky, 1902 for the first time in the state of Bahia. The most abundant species was Polybia ignobilis (Haliday, 1836) (n = 69), and the least abundant were Brachygastra lecheguana (Latreille, 1824) (n = 2) and Polistes canadensis (Linnaeus, 1758) (n = 2). The present study inventory focused exclusively on the diversity of social wasps in an area of Caatinga, which contributes to advance the local fauna knowledge.

Resumo. Alguns vespídeos sociais neotropicais se associam com alguns vertebrados e outros insetos, sendo essas interações relatadas há décadas, entretanto pouco se sabe sobre a presença dessas no Bioma Caatinga e Mata Atlântica. Neste estudo descreve-se o primeiro registro de ocorrência da associação entre ninhos de vespas Polybia rejecta (Fabricius) e formigas Azteca chartifex Forel em área de transição da Mata Atlântica e Caatinga no Rio Grande do Norte. As observações ocorreram em mata particular no município de Monte Alegre, de outubro de 2009 a setembro de 2014 através da busca ativa por colônias, uso do método ad libitum, fotografia e coleta de espécimes com posterior identificação. Na área de estudo foram localizadas quatro colônias ativas e uma abandonada de P. rejecta, todas associadas aos ninhos de A. chartifex com aproximação de 20 a 30 cm. Verificou-se que, quando a colônia de P. rejecta era perturbada, os indivíduos se tornavam agressivos, enquanto que as formigas se aglomeravam no intuito de se defenderem de um provável predador. Essas interações parecem beneficiar tanto vespas como formigas, pois se supõe que as vespas agridam possíveis predadores das formigas, enquanto que as formigas atacam aves e primatas predadores das vespas. Este trabalho corrobora com a hipótese de que a associação entre vespas sociais P. rejecta e formigas A. chartifex é benéfica para ambas as espécies, e que provavelmente as vespas são as mais beneficiadas, como também revela a não exclusividade dessa associação para os biomas aqui relatados.Nesting Polybia rejecta (Fabricius)(Hymenoptera: Vespidae) Associated with Azteca chartifex Forel (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Ecotone Caatinga/Atlantic Forest, in the State of Rio Grande do NorteAbstract. This study describes the first association's record between nests of Polybia rejecta (Fabricius) wasp and Azteca chartifex Forel ants in the transition area of the Atlantic Forest and Caatinga in Rio Grande do Norte. The observations were in a private forest in Monte Alegre, from October 2009 to September 2014 through active search for colonies, use of ad libitum method, photography and collection of specimens with traceability. In the study area were found four active colonies and one abandoned of P. rejecta, all associated with nests of A. chartifex with approach of 20-30 cm. It was found that when the colony of P. rejecta was disturbed, they became aggressive towards the disturbance object, whereas the ants gathered in order to fend off a potential predators. These interactions appear to benefit wasps and ants, it is assumed that is possible that wasps attack ants's predators, whereas the ants attack the wasps's predators. This study corroborates the hypothesis that the association between the social wasps P. rejecta and A. chartifex ants is beneficial for both species, and probably the wasps are the most benefited, but also shows the non-exclusivity of this association for the biomes up then reported.

This work recorded 593 specimens allocated in 11 genera and 23 species of social wasps were collected in Ubajara National Park and Sete Cidades National Park, Caatinga Biome, Northeast of Brazil. Chartergellus communis Richards, 1978, Chartergus globiventris de Saussure, 1854, Metapolybia docilis Richards, 1975, Polybia paulista (von Ihering, 1896), P. rejecta (Fabricius, 1798), Protonectarina sylveirae (de Saussure, 1854) and Protopolybia exigua (de Saussure, 1854) are new occurrence records for Ceará state. Apoica flavissima van der Vecht, 1898, Brachygastra augusti (de Saussure, 1854), C. globiventris, Metapolybia cingulata (Fabricius, 1804), Polybia chrysothorax (Lichtenstein, 1796), P. paulista, P. scutellaris (White, 1841) and Protopolybia chartergoides Gribodo, 1891 are new occurrence records for Piauí state. Eighteen species were collected in the Ubajara National Park, being eight exclusive and fifthteen in the Sete Cidades National Park, being five exclusive; ten species were collected in both Parks. Brachygastra augusti and M.docilis are new records for Caatinga biome.

Species composition of social wasps of the genus Ropalidia from Vietnam is reported, with 24 species having been recorded. Of those, three species are newly recorded for the Vietnamese fauna, namely Ropalidia binghami van der Vecht, 1941, R. parartifex Tan & van Achterberg, 2014 and R. variegata (Smith, 1852). The presence of R. sumatrae (Weber, 1801) in Vietnam is confirmed. An updated key to all recorded species of the genus Ropalidia from Vietnam is also provided.

Information is presented concerning specimen records of polistine social wasps in the state of Amapá, Brazil, in the years from 1904 to 2016, mainly coming from the IEPA and MPEG collections. Spatial distribution of records and of the total collecting effort were analyzed with respect to general landscape aspects of the region, such as vegetation types, hydrography, road infrastructure and the state network of conservation unities. The number of social wasp species registered for Amapá is now 144, with 17 new records of species for the Guiana Shield, and nine species not yet described. Seventeen genera are known to occur in the region, with Mischocyttarus de Saussure and Polybia Lepeletier being richer in species.

New records of social wasps in the State of Piauí are presented, contributing to an increased knowledge of this group in this poorly studied region. This study documents new occurrence records for 12 social wasp species and extends their distribution. Atualização do Conhecimento Sobre Vespas Sociais (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) no Estado do Piauí, BrasilResumo. São apresentados novos registros da fauna de vespas sociais em localidades do Piauí, contribuindo para o aumento do conhecimento desse grupo de organismos na região. Este estudo registra a ocorrência de 12 novos registros de vespas sociais, ampliando suas distribuições.
