Green spaces are protagonists in the new way of conceiving public space, where the collective actions undertaken by social organizations use natural benefits as a source of unlimited resources that improve their quality of life. In this context, public green spaces are in a favorable setting for the development of local activities. However, in the South of Quito, the logic of the State is opposed to the recovery of green areas as triggers of urban life, prioritizing the construction of massive houses and facilities before the recovery of streams and forests that are characteristic elements of the topography from the city. Here the categories of collective actions undertaken by the Alianza Solidaria Housing Cooperative in the recovery of Quebrada Ortega were analyzed and determined. Interviews, photographic archives, semiotic analysis and surveys were the techniques used to feed a mixed analysis methodology. As a result, we find that community participation and self-management are decisive collective actions in the appropriation of public spaces. Finally, the role of women becomes an essential element for executing the processes to improve the quality of life of the community.

Green space is an essential element in a city that serves outdoor recreational place for the community. It helps generating the economic and social values and promoting a healthy lifestyle for local community. The aim of the study is to audit the green spaces in Pasir Gudang Municipality and promote the strategies to improve the use of green space in the study area towards better quality of life of the citizens. The study classifies the existing green spaces in Pasir Gudang in terms of size, function, use, quality, area, accessibility and facilities provided in the green space areas. Two key points have been identified as a basic reference before any development of green spaces take place in Pasir Gudang. The study reveals that present green space areas in Pasir Gudang Municipality are able to serve most communities in the municipality. However, still about 35% of the municipality area is not presently served by the existing green spaces. Thus quantity, quality and accessibility of the green space areas need improvement. This study also shows the potential network of the access that will be able to improve the approachability of all existing green space areas by the citizens to contribute to their quality of life.

Participatory budgets are a popular form of co-decision of residents about public space and quality of life in the city. Projects submitted to participatory budgets respond to needs such as recreation, health, communication and safety. This article evaluates the projects from 2016-2018 of the Wroclaw Participatory Budget in terms of aspects related to the wider issue of natural capital and climate change. The results obtained indicate that despite increasing financial outlays on projects that can contribute to strengthening environmental and climate aspects, the share of investments directly targeted at their implementation is relatively small. A total of 201 projects were analyzed, of which 12% directly and 18% indirectly referred to issues related to natural capital and/or climate change.

Abstract The present research aims to propose a model for the recovery of residual public spaces to improve the quality of life of the district of San Borja’s inhabitants. San Borja is in the process of densification and requires a more significant number of public spaces that offer, in addition to vegetation, public places for active and passive recreation, such as spaces for sports and games, walking pets, and relaxation. These needs have increased due to the confinement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, it was noted that the median strip, or central reservation of the avenue, can be recovered for people to use. Therefore, a four-phase study was carried out that included reviewing the literature and observing two cases. In conclusion, a model was proposed to recover the public space of the median strips of San Borja Norte Avenue and San Borja Sur Avenue to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of San Borja, which can be replicated in other avenues with residual spaces with similar characteristics.

Urban quality of life (QOL) is a complex and multidimensional concept. A wide range of urban QOL assessment tools has been developed worldwide to measure and monitor the quality of urban life taking into account the particular conditions of cities/regions and the needs of their residents. This study aims to develop an urban QOL assessment tool appropriate for the context of Saudi Arabia (SA). For this purpose, this study developed and used a structured approach that consists of an in-depth analysis of 21 urban QOL assessment tools in use worldwide, combined with focus group analysis and feedback from a panel of experts. The results revealed that there is a lack of consensus among the existing tools regarding the usage of QOL indicators and domains, and that the majority of the tools demonstrate a lack of proper coverage of QOL subdomains. The results also show wide variations in the number of indicators used and that most of the examined tools are using objective measurable indicators. This study has identified 67 indicators distributed across 13 domains that constitute the core criteria of the proposed QOL assessment tool. The selected indicators and domains cover all the attributes of urban QOL and are evaluated by experts as important criteria to assess/measure QOL. Moreover, the results demonstrate the advantage of the developed framework and comprehensive list of criteria (CLC) as a structured and efficient approach to design better QOL assessment tools.

AbstractThe paper explores how quality of life is influenced by leisure, tourism, and sports. While these three concepts are counted as the cultural needs of the current industrial and especially urban life, they are not well-provided in many parts of the Third World. While working hours are shortened in the industrial world, followed by provision of leisure and tourism, leisure opportunities are less prevalent in the developing world including many parts of Asia. It should be kept in mind that changes in the quantitative aspects of such concepts lead to qualitative change in any society. This trinity, which also leads to modernization and development, acts as an economic multiplier as well. Today, while the industrial countries invest on employment, they simultaneously do the same on leisure time and sports. Under the overall conditions, the developing countries, including Iran, have yet a long way to go.

Chapter 4 discusses Mayor Frank Jordan’s (1992–1995) revanchist Matrix Quality of Life Program, which sought to enforce a broken-windows policing system in San Francisco. The impact of the policy was felt largely by the visible homeless in downtown San Francisco, who were regularly harassed and arrested by the police and forced out of the city. Because quality-of-life policing desires to sanitize the public space of disruptive and asocial behaviour, the public meals of Food Not Bombs near City Hall resisted the city’s attempt to criminalize homelessness. This chapter argues that the city attempted to construct the homeless as anti-citizens and exclude them from the political and physical spaces of the city.

Abstract Equality for all genders, reflecting that gender is not a simple binary, is about individuals being able to lead their everyday lives autonomously, with their own freedom to maximize their quality of life. Indian women living an urban life appear to have access to individual and collective leisure opportunities. However, their lived experience of indoor and outdoor leisure are heterogeneous and complex. A range of sociocultural, economic and religious factors affect women's leisure choices and, especially, the freedom to enjoy outdoor leisure. Examining the complexities embedded in women's constructions and experiences of outdoor leisure may help in addressing gender inequalities at another level. This requires understanding the multi-layered complexities of Indian women's lives that are intersected by caste, class, education, financial income, geographical location and invisible sociocultural factors. Indian women's outdoor leisure experiences are deeply linked to rights, social justice, human capabilities and quality of life. In that regard, there are both similarities and differences with issues associated with women's leisure in India and Western societies. A collective effort to further research that adopts an intersectionality approach may illuminate invisible issues that women from heterogeneous contexts experience. While needed for women, such an approach may be beneficial for all genders and society in general.
