An inline hot rolling was operated on 5182 aluminum alloy strip cast using a vertical type high speed caster (VHSTRC) at the speed of 60 m/min. A porosity existing at center line of the thickness and a ripple mark on the surface, these are typical defects of the strip cast by the VHSTRC, could be improved by the inline rolling. The rolling speed was as same as the roll-casting-speed of 60m/min. The temperature of the strip, when the inline rolling was operated, was 450oC. The reduction of the strip of the inline rolling was 35%.

Aluminum alloy components of high-speed trains have a great risk of being corroded by various corrosive medium due to extremely complex atmospheric environments. This will bring out huge losses and reduce the safety and stability of trains. In order to solve the problem, cold spray process was used for repairing the damage of the aluminum alloy components with Al-based powders. Microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion behavior were studied. The results indicated that there were very few pores and cracks in the repaired areas after repairing. The average microhardness of the repaired areas was 54.5 HV ± 3.4 HV, and the tensile strength of the repaired samples was 160.4 MPa. After neutral salt spray tests for 1000 h, the rate of mass loss of the samples repaired by cold spray was lower than that of 6A01 aluminum alloy. The electrochemical test results showed that the repaired areas had a higher open circuit potential than 6A01 aluminum alloy. As a result, the repaired areas such as the anode protected its nearby substrate. The samples repaired by cold spray exhibited better corrosion than 6A01 aluminum alloy. Cold spray process and Al-based powders are applicable for repairing the aluminum alloy components of high-speed trains.

This study investigated the crystallization position and formation mechanism of globular crystals at the center area in the thickness direction of aluminum alloy strips cast by a high-speed twin roll caster. Twin roll casters for single strips and clad strips were used, as well as twin roll casters equipped with a cooling slope. The globular crystals were formed from dividing arms of dendrites of the solidified layer facing the center area at the roll gap. The arms of isolated dendrite also divided. No globular crystals were formed at the interfaces of clad strips with different solidification temperatures because of the temperature gradient at the interface which inhibited division of the dendrite arms. It was demonstrated that globular crystals at the center area of the thickness direction were formed by dendrite-arm-dividing at the roll gap by the strip casting clad strip. Experiments by semisolid-strip casting with the cooling slope showed that globular crystals in the molten metal existed in the solidification layers.

Investigation into behaviors of aluminum alloy to be metal formed at the room temperature is conducted in this study. An index is used to evaluate the sensitivity of temperature, that is, index of relative normalized temperature rise to steel called normalized temperature rise index per steel which helps researchers to obtain some insight on new materials based on experiences of steel forging. An investigation to an aluminum alloy shows that the index is quite high, implying that temperature effect as well as rate-dependence effect on the forming processes of aluminum alloy at the room temperature cannot be neglected. Some details of thermomechanical predictions of a relatively high-speed automatic multi-stage forging process of a yoke with highly deformed region are given to reveal the importance of temperature and/or strain rate even in cold forging of aluminum alloy parts with high speed and high strain. Both similar- and dissimilar metal joints, which are difficult to be welded by using ordinary fusion welding methods, were successfully obtained by using several advanced high-speed solid-state joining methods. (1) Al/Al, Cu/Cu, Al/Fe(Steel), Al/Cu, Al/Ni, Cu/Ni and Al/Bulk metallic glass lap joints were magnetic pulse welded by means of mutual high-speed oblique collision of metal sheets at a high speed of about 500m/s. (2) 2xxx aluminum alloy pins were stud-welded to 5xxx alloy aluminum sheets and several kinds of plated steel sheets at a high speed by using a specially designed discharge circuit. The welding was achieved within a few milliseconds without producing any weld marks on the back surface of the plate. (3) 6022 aluminum alloy sheets were friction stir spot welded to steel sheets and various kinds of galvanized and aluminum-plated steel sheets. The welding was achieved within a few seconds. For those joints, joint strength and characteristic joint interface morphology were investigated.
