When a strip of Al-Si alloy with an Si content of 1% was cast using a vertical-type high-speed twin-roll caster, cracks form in its surface. The effects of the pouring method, the shape and position of the nozzle, and the roll surface texture on surface crack formation were evaluated with a roll caster. The rolls were made of a copper alloy, and the roll speed was 30 m/min. The as-cast strips were bent to investigate the degree of crack formation, and the outer surface of the strips was observed without magnification and with a stereomicroscope to determine the influence of the pouring method, the shape and position of the nozzle, and the roll surface. A roll machined to form V-shaped grooves 0.4 mm deep on the surface of the strips was most useful for reducing surface cracking. Changing the shape of the nozzle tip was second-most effective. There was a clear correlation between the roll surface condition and surface cracking in the Al-Si strip.

A scraper was attached to an unequal-diameter twin-roll caster without requiring large modifications. This caster was used as a 1000 mm diameter single roll caster equipped with a scraper, and its strip casting ability was tested. The effects of the scraper angle and load, the roll speed, and the pouring temperature of the molten metal on the scribed surface, thickness distribution and average strip thickness were investigated. The scribed surface characteristics were sound and the thickness distribution was flat when the scraper angle was 60° and the scraper load was in the range of 1 to 4 kg. When the scraper load was more than 1 kg, the thickness distribution was uneven. The average strip thickness decreased as the roll speed increased. The pouring temperature of the molten metal influenced the evenness of the solidified layer thickness. The solidified layer became even as the molten metal temperature was decreased. A strip cast with the determined optimal conditions was then cold rolled down to 1 mm to improve its surface quality.

Cube texture and microstructural evolution of as-cast non-oriented silicon steel (1.3% Si) during cold rolling and annealing were studied. The results showed that the as-cast microstructure with grain size in the range of 100–500 μm had a weak texture. The strong orientation was mainly located at {100} and {110} planes. A significant content of shear-deformed grains oriented with {110}<110> were obtained by cold-rolling, and many regions oriented with Cube texture were distributed in the shear bands. During cold-rolling, the orientation of the shear-deformed microstructure tilted towards the {111}<112> orientation, while the matrix orientation retained {110}<110>. On further cold-rolling, the residual part of {110}<110> experienced shear deformation, forming more shear bands, strengthening the Cube orientation. During annealing, Cube orientation grains nucleated in the shear bands leading to strong Cube texture, and corresponding B50 was 1.83T/1.79T.
