The development of telecommunications plays an essential role in the economy, as it affects the opportunities for communication between economic actors at both the national and global levels. Today mobile communication companies, which provide quality communication and information retrieval opportunities through the variety of their services, technological features and tariff plans, are important telecommunication providers. The aim of the present research is to examine the leading mobile communication service providers in Latvia by employing the theoretical findings of communication technology and telecommunications.The research used the following methods: monographic, induction and deduction, graphic, comparison, as well as competitiveness assessment based on the competitiveness index.The research described the theoretical aspects of telecommunications, examined the leading mobile communication service providers in Latvia, their most important financial performance indicators, services and tariff plans offered as well as assessed their competitiveness.Examining the mobile tariff plans and the services included therein, it was found that they were quite similar. However, an examination of each offer in more detail revealed that there were many nuances that were important to the client and that should be paid attention to.After assessing the competitiveness of the leading mobile communication providers, it was concluded that Latvijas Mobilas Telefons scored the highest number of points, Bite Latvija was in second place and Tele 2 took third place. An assessment of the key factors of competitiveness for the providers revealed that the company Latvijas Mobilais Telefons needed to improve the positions where its competitors had higher ratings: its discount system, the prices of services and the supply of services.

The user traffic in the mobile communication area has rapidly increased owing to the widespread of smartphones and various cloud services. To handle the increasing traffic, in the fifth-generation mobile communication system (5G), the millimeter-wave multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) communication technology is under development. Because the MIMO transmission performance heavily depends on the radio propagation characteristics, various MIMO channel measurements are needed for the performance evaluation and system design. The accurate and efficient parameter estimation algorithm which estimates the propagation delays and angle of arrivals (AoA) of radio waves is also indispensable for the purpose. In this paper, we extended the joint delay and azimuth estimation (JADE) method based on multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. In our proposal, the drawback of the MUSIC that the performance degrades for the estimation of coherent waves was solved by applying the smoothing technique in the frequency domain. It also makes the antenna calibration simpler. We implemented the proposed algorithm for the channel sounding system in the 66 GHz band, which is one of the candidate frequency bands for the International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) system and evaluated the effectiveness through the experiment in an anechoic chamber. The result showed that our proposed method can de-correlate the signal components of coherent waves, and improved the parameter estimation accuracy significantly. The root means square error (RMSE) of the propagation delay estimation was improved from 2.7 ns to 0.9 ns, and the RMSE of the AoA estimation was improved from 20.3 deg. to 7.2 deg. The results are expected to be utilized for the millimeter wave band MIMO channel modeling.

Development of new personal mobile and wireless devices for healthcare has become essential due to our aging population characterized by constant rise in chronic diseases that consequently require a complex treatment and close monitoring. Personal telehealth devices allow patients to adequately receive their appropriate treatment, followup with their doctors, and report any emergency without the need of the presence of any caregivers with them thus increasing their quality of life in a cost-effective fashion. This paper includes a brief overview of personal telehealth systems, a survey of 100 consecutive ED patients aged >65 years, and introduces “Limmex” a new GSM based technology packaged in a wristwatch. Limmex can by a push of a button initiate multiple emergency call and establish mobile communication between the patient and a preselected person, institution, or a search and rescue service. To the best of our knowledge, Limmex is the first of its kind worldwide.

The emerging era of mobile communication transcends the traditional privileging of text and voice to draw upon sensations of augmented reality, especially in terms of the visual domain. Thus one will be able to have new views of the local environment (mobile visual services). In terms of the former, the sense of sight is increasingly being brought to bear on the nexus of physical environment and digital information, yielding literally novel and unprecedented views. This article assesses examples of these services and the way they inter-mix previously separate domains, but also create new layers of monitoring of self and others. In particular, it notes conflicts at the levels of public policy and individual privacy and autonomy.

Call center is the frontline of communicating with customers. This paper reports the findings of a survey on service effectiveness of call center operations of mobile communication service providers in Turkey that either use in-house or outsourcing method. The primary objective of this paper is to explore how the customers of mobile communications service provider companies perceive the inbound call center processes for speed, easiness of use, first call resolution, effective inquiry and in doing that what qualities they display. For this purpose a survey was conducted with the customers who use call centers either to make an inquiry or to complain about the services. The aims were: to specify the typical behavior of mobile communications service users; how the firms handle inquiries or complaints; if they solve the problems for good and in what time or how long it takes to get an answer practically useful; to reveal the speed and timeliness of the processes. The survey was conducted with the mobile phone users in a highly populated area of Istanbul.

When telecommunication infrastructure is damaged by natural disasters, creating a network that can handle voice channels can be vital for search and rescue missions. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) equipped with WiFi access points could be rapidly deployed to provide wireless coverage to ground users. This WiFi access network can in turn be used to provide a reliable communication service to be used in search and rescue missions. We formulate a new problem for UAVs optimal deployment which considers not only WiFi coverage but also the mac sublayer (i.e., quality of service). Our goal is to dispatch the minimum number of UAVs for provisioning a WiFi network that enables reliable VoIP communications in disaster scenarios. Among valid solutions, we choose the one that minimizes energy expenditure at the user’s WiFi interface card in order to extend ground user’s smartphone battery life as much as possible. Solutions are found using well-known heuristics such as K-means clusterization and genetic algorithms. Via numerical results, we show that the IEEE 802.11 standard revision has a decisive impact on the number of UAVs required to cover large areas, and that the user’s average energy expenditure (attributable to communications) can be reduced by limiting the maximum altitude for drones or by increasing the VoIP speech quality.
