X-Ray absorption spectromicroscopy provides rich information on the chemical organization of materials down to the nanoscale. However, interpretation of this information in studies of “natural” materials such as biological or environmental science specimens can be complicated by the complex mixtures of spectroscopically complicated materials present. We describe here the shortcomings that sometimes arise in previously-employed approaches such as cluster analysis, and we present a new approach based on non-negative matrix approximation (NNMA) analysis with both sparseness and cluster-similarity regularizations. In a preliminary study of the large-scale biochemical organization of human spermatozoa, NNMA analysis delivers results that nicely show the major features of spermatozoa with no physically erroneous negative weightings or thicknesses in the calculated image.

Abstract. In this work, recent advances on the study of reconnection in turbulence are reviewed. Using direct numerical simulations of decaying incompressible two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), it was found that in fully developed turbulence complex processes of reconnection locally occur (Servidio et al., 2009, 2010a). In this complex scenario, reconnection is spontaneous but locally driven by the fields, with the boundary conditions provided by the turbulence. Matching classical turbulence analysis with a generalized Sweet-Parker theory, the statistical features of these multiple-reconnection events have been identified. A discussion on the accuracy of our algorithms is provided, highlighting the necessity of adequate spatial resolution. Applications to the study of solar wind discontinuities are reviewed, comparing simulations to spacecraft observations. New results are shown, studying the time evolution of these local reconnection events. A preliminary study on the comparison between MHD and Hall MHD is reported. Our new approach to the study of reconnection as an element of turbulence has broad applications to space plasmas, shedding a new light on the study of magnetic reconnection in nature.

The numerous cases of academic procrastination of students in various universities in Indonesia are worrying. In terms of intervention, there is a proven effective approach to improve students’ skill to cope with academic procrastination. It’s called Guidance and Counseling Gestalt Prophetic (G-Pro). Unfortunately, due to a lack of access, G-Pro needs to be developed. This article will present a new approach called E-Counseling Gestalt Prophetic (E-G-Pro). The author used the Borg and Gall model research and development (R & D) model with three research steps: a preliminary study, model development, and model validity.  Focus group discussion (FGD) has been done to assess the properness of the model. Four parties, each from information and technology expert, Qur'anic Interpretation expert, Islamic education and religiosity expert, guidance and counselor expert, and counselee, were invited to the FGD. Based on internal judgement by experts and users, the E-G-Pro is highly feasible to be applied to help students cope with academic procrastination in Indonesian Islamic Higher Education.

The public's attitude towards different areas of scientific research is an important element in formulating science and technology policy. This paper proposes a new approach to surveying public opinion on specific areas of scientific research. A preliminary study was conducted using this approach that found a difference of opinion between scientists and the public, demonstrating the significance of this kind of survey. Through conducting a regression analysis of the results of the survey, it is concluded that the most suitable way of grasping public opinion is to ask a question about the respondents' wish for the early realization of a scientific objective.

This research focuses on creating a standardized nasal cavity model of adult Malaysian females. The methodology implemented in this research is a new approach compared to other methods used by previous researchers. This study involves 26 females who represent the test subjects for this preliminary study. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis was carried out to better understand the characteristics of the standardized model and to compare it to the available standardized Caucasian model. This comparison includes cross-sectional areas for both half-models as well as velocity contours along the nasal cavities. The Malaysian female standardized model is larger in cross-sectional area compared to the standardized Caucasian model thus leading to lower average velocity magnitudes. The standardized model was further evaluated with four more Malaysian female test subjects based on its cross-sectional areas and average velocity magnitudes along the nasal cavities. This evaluation shows that the generated model represents an averaged and standardized model of adult Malaysian females.

This article tries to deliver Abdullah Saeed’s idea on the new approach to inter pret the Qur’ân called contextualist approach. He proposes his ideas based on his finding that there is a gap between texts which have been understood literally by majority of ulama’ and socio-historical context of the Qur’ân at the time of revelation in the first/seventh century and the contemporary concerns and needs of Muslims today. Based on his expertise on hermeneutic, he proposes four stages: encounter with the world of the text, critical analysis, meaning for the first recipients and meaning for the present. The proposed idea should be appreciated even though it seems that it is a preliminary study which has to be elaborated into practical way.
