In this study, the novel finishing method of the Micro Lens Array mold is proposed. This method combines the cutting by a ball-endmill and the finishing by sphere indentation. In the previous step, U-shape grooves intersected at right angle are machined by a ball-endmill. In the following step, the ball tool indents at the intersection between U-shape grooves, consequently, the aiming lens form and the aiming surface roughness are obtained. From the results of the manufacturing experiments of the MLA mold by this method, the following are made clear : The proposed method is effective to suppress the deformation of neighboring lens forms caused by following indentation. The improvement effect of sphere indentation on the finished surface roughness is remarkable in the early stage of indentation. The transcribing deviations are 12μm or less in comparison between the radius of lens form and the ideal value regardless of radii in grooves previously cut. In case of the indentation of neighboring four (2 × 2) lenses, the deviation reduces down to 3μm.

A novel curved artificial optical compound eye structure is proposed, which needs to be manufactured by ultra-precision machining due to the application of aspheric in the design. In this artificial compound eye, each of the micro-lens has an aspheric surface instead of spherical surface, which leads to a reduction of spherical aberration from 400μm to 75μm. The focal length of micro-lens is decided by its own position and equals to the distance between base surface and image receiver. The sructural parameters of micro-lens were calculated according to the theory of geometrical optics. The model of artificial compound eye was built and verified by ray tracing. Finally, the result shows that the novel curved artificial compound eye can improve imaging resolution and imaging quality at the edge effectively, and the proposed structure is feasible.

Micro lens-on-lens array (MLLA) is a novel 3D structure with unique optical properties that cannot be fabricated accurately and quickly by existing processing methods. In this paper, a new fabricating method of MLLAs with two focal lengths is proposed. By introducing the soft lithography technology, nano-imprint technology and mask alignment exposure technology, MLLAs with high precisions can be obtained. A MLLA is successfully fabricated with two focal lengths of 58 μm and 344 μm, and an experiment is carried out. The results show that the MLLA has excellent two-level focusing and imaging abilities. Furthermore, the fabricated profiles of the MLLA agree well with the designed profiles, and the morphology deviation of the MLLA is better than 2%, satisfying the application requirements. The results verify the feasibility and validity of the novel fabricating method. By adjusting mask patterns and processing parameters, MLLAs with both changeable sizes and focal lengths can be obtained.
