ABSTRACTWe have performed investigations of resonance effects inside a gallium nitride one-dimensional photonic crystal slab in order to enhance the second-harmonic generated from an beam incident on the surface of the slab. Convenient conditions on the incident beam propagation direction and polarization are first identified by experimental or theoretical linear optical studies. Giant enhancements in the second-harmonic conversion have been obtained by comparison with the unpatterned GaN layer. The combined role of the resonant coupling of the fundamental field and of the second-harmonic field has been observed by rotating the polarization of the fundamental beam.

Using a reformulation of ordinary perturbation theory to first and second order, explicit solutions for the penetration of electrostatic waves into a semi-infinite Vlasov plasma are presented. Two types of electron velocity distribution are used, the uniform step (‘water-bag’ model) and the Maxwellian. The existence of propagating modes below the plasma frequency, behaviour of the second harmonic field and the formation of a narrow sheet of electrons near the bounding wall are displayed. Replacement of boundary fields with equivalent charge and current sources is discussed.

We investigate optical bistability in intersubband transitions of an asymmetric semiconductor quantum well structure that has equidistant transitions between three subbands of the system and is placed in a unidirectional cavity. The system is simultaneously coupled by a fundamental field and its second harmonic. The second harmonic field acts as a control field and significantly influences the optical bistability. In addition, the two-color coherent control of optical bistability by the relative phase of the fundamental and the second harmonic fields is shown. The influence of the electronic cooperation parameter on the OB behavior is also discussed. This investigation may be used for optimizing and controlling the optical switching process in the SQW solid-state system, which is much more practical than that in the atomic system because of its flexible design and the controllable interference strength.

The solution is analyzed for the problem of the second harmonic generation by a plane electromagnetic wave with elliptical polarization from a thin optically nonlinear layer on the surface of a cylindrical particle of finite size. A graphical analysis of the solution is carried out by constructing three-dimensional radiation patterns characterizing the spatial distribution of the second-harmonic radiation power and its polarization. It is found that for small radii of the base of the cylindrical particle, each anisotropy coefficient corresponds to its own individual shape of the radiation pattern. Increasing the height of the cylindrical particle leads to flattening of the radiation pattern. More than 20 mathematical properties of the solution are found, which characterize symmetries of the second harmonic field distribution. Individual properties are illustrated in radiation patterns.

AbstractWe report the effect of the aluminum oxide substrate on the emission of monolithic AlGaAs-on-insulator nonlinear nanoantennas. By coupling nonlinear optical measurements with electron diffraction and microscopy observations, we find that the oxidation-induced stress causes negligible crystal deformation in the AlGaAs nanostructures and only plays a minor role in the polarization state of the harmonic field. This result highlights the reliability of the wet oxidation of thick AlGaAs optical substrates and further confirms the bulk χ(2) origin of second harmonic generation at 1.55 μm in these nanoantennas, paving the way for the development of AlGaAs-on-insulator monolithic metasurfaces.
