The present paper investigates three-part appliques from the ensemble of archaeological sites of Shivera Prospikhino, which was located in the Lower Angara region. The variants of this type of jewelry have been indicated, and their territorial distribution in the region and Northern Eurasia have been determined. The chronological frame of the extent of appliques during the research archaeological complex is presented. The highest diversity of variants of appliques are recorded in the burials of the 12th — middle 13th century. In the burials of the Mongol period (the 13th –14th century) appliques with a plain shield and items with a drawn line on shield predominate. Jewelry with a convex figured nose, with «pearls’ on the ears and with a drawn line in the center of the shield have not been not marked in the materials of nearby and distant archaeological complexes of Northern Eurasia. The paper puts forward a position on the universal using of three-part appliques. Visual research of the appliques allowed us to record technological traces that reflect the techniques of making jewelry. The characteristic of the recipe of the alloys used has been presented. At the moment, the published materials indicate that the territory of the Lower Angara region is the north-eastern border of the mass distribution of three-part appliques. Income is an important indicator for assessing the level of economy development as well as identifying and assessing living standards. The population in Northeast border is poor, facilities are outdated, people’s life is difficult, but it hold great potentials for economic development. However, the region’s biggest challenge today is low living standards and high poverty rate. Differences in income and living standards across regions and strata tend to increase the gap. The sustainability of the trend of income increase and improvement of living standards of the population is not stable. As a result, the development of mountainous areas is dependent on poverty reduction solutions for ethnic minorities through the increase of incomes and improvement of market connectivity for ethnic minorities in mountainous areas.

The role of hymns in public worship and the influence it had on the Schism in 1859 in South Africa During the Middle Ages congregational singing was replaced by choir singing. Both Luther and Calvin agreed that the members of the congregation should actively participate in the worship service by means of song. Calvin limited congregational songs to the Psalms of the Old Testament. The church in Netherlands followed his example, but added some hymns, excluding the Apostles Creed, that comprises also lyrical parts from Scripture. In 1807 a hymn book was implemented and used in the Netherlands. This was one of the reasons for the Schism which took place in 1834. During 1814 the hymn book was implemented in the Cape resulting in discontent in the border districts. Some discontented people took part in the Great Trek. A congregation mainly consisting of these people was established in Rustenburg in 1859. In this congregation only Psalms were sung during services. Soon Reformed congregations having the same objections regarding hymns came into being in the Free State and the north-eastern Cape Province. For the founder of these congregations, Rev. D. Postma, the singing of free hymns was a mediance matter. For the “Doppers” as the conservative people were called, the singing of Psalms only was a serious matter of principle. Times have changed and the Reformed Churches in South Africa will have to reflect whether it is really a matter of principle to sing Old Testament Psalms only. The suffering, death, resurrection and ascension of Christ should also be celebrated in song. The existing 48 scriptural lyrics do not satisfy these requirements. Free hymns of the other Afrikaans churches will definitely have to be taken into consideration.

The works of E. Biot, published by the Institut National de France in 1848, made it possible to study material recorded in volumes 191 and 192 of the well-known 13th-century Encyclopaedia of Ma Touan-lin as well as records from other sources. They contain observational data of 24 centuries (especially from the 11th century) on more than 1500 fireballs, with descriptions of their positions with respect to the stars as well as descriptions of their physical, kinematic and other properties. The observation dates of the lunar calendar have been converted by Biot into dates of the Julian Calendar.We have been able to process data on 1220 fireballs. As a result of this radiants were obtained for 153 meteor showers, seven of which belong to great showers. Out of the remaining 146 radiants of the minor showers, 80 radiants are more certain than the remainder.The radiants were deduced from observations on dates recorded in short intervals from several years to several decades. First the dates of visibility were obtained along with the activity and radiants of great showers which are still active. In the Leonid shower, with retrograde motion, a shift of visibility dates to a much later period has been noted corresponding to a forward motion of the orbit's node, whereas a retrograde motion of the node is observed in the Quadrantids (i < 90°). In the Lyrids and Perseids, whose orbits are nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic plane, the nodes experienced no perturbations, and the visibility epochs for the showers remained the same during a period of 1000 years and longer. The motion of apsides resulted in a shift of the radiant; the increase of the ecliptical latitude indicated secular augmentation of the orbit's inclination (Geminids, η-Aquarids, Orionids, Leonids). The radiant of the Perseids was located in Cassiopeia, where the radiant of the present-day Cassiopeids is to be found. It appears that the Perseid stream began to cross the orbit of the Earth in 830 A.D.In the δ-Aquarids the North branch was active, while there is no evidence that the South branch had existed earlier than 900 years ago. The Virginids, Librids, Scorpionids, Sagittarids and Aurigids were quite appreciable and their studies furnish much interesting data. Particularly active were the Taurids; their North and South branches were observed over 1000 years back. The South Taurids were about half as active as the North Taurids (at present this relation is reversed). Very active were the Cygnids (July–August), which presented at that time a compact shower, now disrupted into a series of minor showers with radiants spread over a large area of the celestial sphere. Of definitive interest is the radiant of the great meteor shower observed in 1037 (August 21 by the Julian Calendar, September 9 by the Gregorian Calendar, 1950–0), α = 324°, δ = + 1°(1950–0).Some of the showers active in these early centuries are now unknown; on the other hand, some showers which are well known now were not observed in the Middle Ages. In the past millennium only those streams have survived whose orbits were so situated with respect to the orbits of the outer planets, that they were not subjected to any considerable perturbations produced by these planets.

AbstractIt is very difficult to start from scratch a new Astrophysics program in a country with very little or no researchers in the field. In 2007, we began to set-up an Astrophysics program by TWINNING the Université de Ouagadougou with the Université de Montréal in Canada, the Université de Provence in France and the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Already, courses are given at the undergraduate and Master levels and a teaching Observatory has been built. A 1m research telescope was also moved from the La Silla Observatory in Chile to Burkina Faso and the infrastructure is being built at the moment on mount Djaogari in the north-eastern part of the country. In the meantime, 6 students are doing their PhD in Astrophysics overseas (Canada, France and South Africa) and will become the core of the research group at the Université de Ouagadougou. An engineer is also doing his PhD in Astronomical Instrumentation to help with the maintenance of the equipment on the Research Telescope.

Abstract During geobotanical studies in the north-eastern border of hemi-boreal zone, in Valday (NW Russia), rare eutrophic deciduous forests dominated by oak Quercus robur were observed. A comparison of these forests with the model of European deciduous forest in Białowieża National Park (NE-Poland) indicates a great similarity. Therefore, eutrophic deciduous forests in Valday can be classified to the Querco-Fagetea class, the Fagetalia sylvaticae order and to the Capinion betuli alliance, despite the absence of hornbeam Carpinus betulus in the region. Rarity of eutrophic deciduous forests in Valday region results probably from strong anthropogenic pressure in the past.

Several years ago I wrote a number of papers on the results of my investigations in a synclinal area near Megiddo, south-east of Mount Carmel, which I called “ the syncline of Megiddo ”. In the thick Eocene series of this syncline two distinct horizons of Lower and Upper Lutetian have been recognized. Above the Lutetian beds some patches of transgressive Upper Oligocene are preserved. Unfortunately the publications were based on investigations of only the north-eastern border of the whole synclinal region, further field explorations having been made impossible by the riots in 1936−39. In the summer of 1942 I renewed my fieldwork, which has led to a discovery of an Upper Eocene transgression over a probable Middle Eocene series.

AbstractThe first records of Leuctra geniculata Stephens, 1836 in the north-eastern border of its area (the Czech Republic) are presented and an overview of references, synonyms and distribution of the species is given. The ecological preferences of the species, supported by chemical and hydromorphological parameters, are defined. Probable dissemination paths into the Czech Republic and the supposed life cycle of the species are discussed. Photographs of morphological characters, SEM photos of eggs, associated macroinvertebrate assemblages (EPT taxa) and maps of distribution are included.

Eremogone saxatilis (L.) Ikonn – a Eurasian, boreal-temperate species distributed in the European partof Russia and Southern Siberia. Recently the species occurs in dry pine forests, on the edges, sandy forest glades, inthe steppes. Despite its rather extensive area, this species is specified in the Red Books of different regions of Russia,including the Kirov region. The aim of the research is to study the ecological and coenotic features of the Eremogone saxatilis habitat on the north-eastern border of the range. The research of the species distribution features was carried out inthe protected area “Medvedsky Bor”. On the basis of geobotanical descriptions, the analysis of ecological preferences andrealized ecological potencies of Eremogone saxatilis was carried out, which was realized out according to the amplitudephytoindication scales of D. N. Tsyganov. According to the data obtained, it was found that the studied species does nothave high adaptive capabilities to various environmental conditions. Eremogone saxatilis exists in areas with approximateconditions of its original habitats on the territory of the Kirov region. The main factors for the growth of the species werethe increased illumination and dryness on the poor soils of pine forests in the northern parts of its modern area.
