The scientific community considers readership analysis of academic artifacts to be a significant endeavor. The reference manager’s readership count is a momentous indication for early research evaluation. In response, this study demonstrates the characteristics of Mendeley readership for EPS articles from twelve narrow disciplines and compares them with citations. The bibliographic and citation data have been collected from Scopus and the corresponding readers’ data from Mendeley. The Spearman correlation was performed among citations and readers for all unique articles for all investigated disciplines. Further, we also looked at the relationships between articles with non-zero readers, as well as articles satisfied by percentile ranking of the top 75 per cent, 50 per cent, and 25 per cen treaders. The result indicates large correlations among citations and readers (avg. 0.669) for all investigated disciplines. If we analysed only non-zero readers, as well as a percentile ranking of articles, the correlation results show a decreasing trend. Around 98.57 per cent of articles have at least one reader in Mendeley and AS (97.53 %) discipline has registered the highest one. The CES discipline had registered the largest MRS of 32.25 and MCS of 12.75. Most of the readers come from post-doctoral students and Ph.D. students. The correlation results indicate that the readership statistics should be used as an impact indicator for EPS discipline.

AbstractIn medicine and other academic settings, (doctoral) students often work in interdisciplinary teams together with researchers of pharmaceutical sciences, natural sciences in general, or biostatistics. They should be fundamentally taught good research practices, especially in terms of statistical analysis. This includes reproducibility as a central aspect. Acknowledging that even experienced researchers and supervisors might be unfamiliar with necessary aspects of a perfectly reproducible workflow, a lecture series on reproducible research (RR) was developed for young scientists in clinical pharmacology. The pilot series highlighted definitions of RR, reasons for RR, potential merits of RR, and ways to work accordingly. In trying to actually reproduce a published analysis, several practical obstacles arose. In this article, reproduction of a working example is commented to emphasize the manifold facets of RR, to provide possible explanations for difficulties and solutions, and to argue that harmonized curricula for (quantitative) clinical researchers should include RR principles. These experiences should raise awareness among educators and students, supervisors and young scientists. RR working habits are not only beneficial for ourselves or our students, but also for other researchers within an institution, for scientific partners, for the scientific community, and eventually for the public profiting from research findings.

Fast-and-frugal heuristics are simple strategies that base decisions on only a few predictor variables. In so doing, heuristics may not only reduce complexity but also boost the accuracy of decisions, their speed, and transparency. In this paper, bibliometrics-based decision trees (BBDTs) are introduced for research evaluation purposes. BBDTs visualize bibliometrics-based heuristics (BBHs), which are judgment strategies solely using publication and citation data. The BBDT exemplar presented in this paper can be used as guidance to find an answer on the question in which situations simple indicators such as mean citation rates are reasonable and in which situations more elaborated indicators (i.e., [sub-]field-normalized indicators) should be applied.

BackgroundWe examined citation data for the British Journal of Psychiatry (BJP) and four other general psychiatry journals to assess their impact on the scientific community.MethodData on three measures of citations (total number of citations, impact factor and ranking by impact factor) were obtained from Journal Citation Reports for 1985–1994. Rank correlations from year to year were calculated.ResultsThe BJP currently ranks sixth of all psychiatry journals when journals are ranked by impact factor. The journal's impact factor fell between 1985 and 1990 and this was followed by a rise in impact factor after 1991. The BJP did not rank in the top 10 psychiatry journals between 1991 and 1993. Archives of General Psychiatry is cited more frequently than any other psychiatry journal, with the American Journal of Psychiatry usually ranking second. Psychopharmacology journals are replacing more general journals in the top rankings. Rankings of most journals have become less stable in recent years.ConclusionsThe BJP would have to change the nature and number of papers published to improve its impact factor. There are a number of limitations to citation data and such data are only one of several factors useful in evaluating the importance of a journal's contribution to scientific and clinical communities.Conflict of interestThese condauthor is Editor of the British Journal of Psychiatry.

AbstractCitation metrics have value because they aim to make scientific assessment a level playing field, but urgent transparency-based adjustments are necessary to ensure that measurements yield the most accurate picture of impact and excellence. One problematic area is the handling of self-citations, which are either excluded or inappropriately accounted for when using bibliometric indicators for research evaluation. Here, in favor of openly tracking self-citations we report on self-referencing behavior among various academic disciplines as captured by the curated Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database. Specifically, we examined the behavior of 385,616 authors grouped into 15 subject areas like Biology, Chemistry, Science & Technology, Engineering, and Physics. These authors have published 3,240,973 papers that have accumulated 90,806,462 citations, roughly five percent of which are self-citations. Up until now, very little is known about the buildup of self-citations at the author-level and in field-specific contexts. Our view is that hiding self-citation data is indefensible and needlessly confuses any attempts to understand the bibliometric impact of one’s work. Instead we urge academics to embrace visibility of citation data in a community of peers, which relies on nuance and openness rather than curated scorekeeping.

This publication aims to disseminate to the scientific community and society in general, the project of the same title of this publication that is under development by the collaboration of the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Rio de Janeiro (IFRJ) and the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de aneiro (UFRRJ). Briefly, this project aims to quantify and identify parasites of the body surface (ectoparasites) and intestinal parasites (enteroparasites) of wild birds, which should be related to their biological and ecological conditions, and to evaluate the dispersal seed process performed by birds (ornithocoria), the viability and development of these seeds and thus establish the degree of importance of ornithocoria in reforestation at the IFRJ campus of Pinheiral, RJ. The project includes the integration of five doctoral professors, a laboratory technician doctor, as well as a postdoctoral student, four doctoral students, one master student, two undergraduate students and four technical high school students. To date, six expeditions have been made in the reforestation area of the Espaço Ecológico Educativo (EEcoE) of the IFRJ campus in Pinheiral, RJ, where a total of 196 wild birds have been captured, evaluated, ringed and recorded at the Centro Nacional de Pesquisa e Conservação de Aves Silvestres (CEMAVE), of which 29 were recaptured for revaluations. Four articles were published on the themes of parasitology and ornithochory in wild birds. Two practical short courses in the area of study were taught in September 2018 and February 2019 to IFRJ students, but open to the scientific community and society at large. Currently the project is not expected to end, since there are plenty of unpublished and relevant results in both the area of parasitology and ornithochory of wild birds.

Citation data and journal impact factors are important components of faculty dossiers and figure prominently in both promotion decisions and assessments of a researcher's broader societal impact. Although these metrics play a large role in high-stakes decisions, the evidence is mixed regarding whether they are valid proxies for key aspects of research quality. We use data from three large scale studies to assess whether citation counts and impact factors predict four indicators of aspects of research quality: (1) the number of statistical reporting errors in a paper, (2) the evidential value of the reported data, (3) the expected replicability of reported research findings in peer reviewed journals, and (4) the actual replicability of a given experimental result. Both citation counts and impact factors were weak and inconsistent predictors of research quality, so defined, and sometimes negatively related to quality. Our findings impugn the validity of citation data and impact factors as indices of research quality and call into question their usefulness in evaluating scientists and their research. In light of these results, we argue that research evaluation should instead focus on the process of how research is conducted and incentivize behaviors that support open, transparent, and reproducible research.

<p class="p1"><strong>Introduction:</strong><span class="Apple-converted-space">  </span>With new missions being selected, missions moving to post-operations, and missions starting their journey to various targets in the Solar System, the European Space Agency’s Planetary Science Archive [1] (<span class="s1">http://psa.esa.int</span>) (PSA) is in constant evolution to support the needs of the projects and of the scientific community<span class="s2">.</span></p> <p class="p2"><strong>Geometry as a key input for users:</strong><span class="Apple-converted-space">  </span>While analysing the various services that the PSA already offers, geometrical information was lacking in many ways. Feedback received by the users and the PSA User Group pointed to improvements in this area.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p> <p class="p3">During the past years, the PSA structured its internal architecture to provide excellent services to the community. Through external partnership, we developed the GEOmetry GENerator that allows a consistent way of deriving geometrical information. This input provides a solid foundation to develop Geographical Information System (GIS) services into the PSA. At the end of 2020, the PSA released its 3D and 2D interfaces for Mars Express and Rosetta, providing a new generation of geometrical services. Although currently focused on Mars and comet 67P/C-G, our architecture enables a rapid growth to support in particular BepiColombo and JUICE.</p> <p class="p2"><strong>High level products through the Guest Storage Facility: </strong>One of the other new service provided to the scientific community recently is the Guest Storage Facility (GSF), which allows users to store derived products. Products such as geological maps, Digital Terrain Models, new calibrated files, and others can be stored in the GSF in the format most used by the users. The philosophy of the GSF service is to impose minimum requirements on the data producers, while delivering maximum usability to the end users. Various products related to Titan and Mars are available in the GSF. Products related to the Moon, comet 67P/C-G and other targets are in preparation. Contact us to preserve your science!<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p> <p class="p2"><strong>Interact with the PSA and expect more in the years to come: </strong>The PSA aims to build on the previous development to further enrich its services. New GIS interfaces related to Phobos, the Moon and Mars are in development to facilitate the searching capabilities on those targets. In parallel to those major developments, new functionalities will be developed to support ESA missions, in particular ExoMars, Mars Express, and BepiColombo.</p> <p class="p3">At the PSA we constantly interact with our users to ensure that our services are in line with the expectations and needs of the community (despite massive disruptions in 2019 and 2020). The first description and illustration of the duck-billed platypus appeared in the scientific literature in 1799. Since its international debut, the platypus has fascinated the scientific community. The past 200 years of scholarly literature is peppered with journal articles containing taxonomic revisions and details of the bizarre biology and behaviour of this paradoxical species. Yet, despite the fact that much of this historic literature is now accessible online, it is almost impossible to find. This is because, unlike contemporary scientific publications, much of the digitised historical literature lacks article-level citation data and digital object identifiers (DOIs). This paper will detail the work the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) is undertaking to bring the world’s historic literature into the modern linked network of scholarly research. It will present three case studies – three “lost” platypus articles from three very different publications – to demonstrate how the retrospective registration of DOIs is critical to making legacy literature discoverable, citable and trackable. This paper will also discuss the responsibility and accountability that comes with assigning DOIs, including best practice for out-of-copyright and orphaned content, and the issues that arise when the definitive (DOI’d) versions of public domain journal articles are locked behind paywalls.

In this article we discuss a number of objectives we consider important for improving graduate training. In addition, we propose several methods by which each objective may be attained. The suggestions are geared toward Francophone universities in Europe (including France, Belgium, and Switzerland) and their particular constraints, but they may prove useful for colleagues in other countries as well. First, we discuss how doctoral students can receive top-quality training in order to acquire the knowledge specific to the demands of a future university professor and researcher. Next, we develop more general objectives, including the development of a broad view of the discipline and the acquisition of skills such as the ability to write and publish scientific articles. We also emphasize the involvement of graduate students in professional activities and the necessity of developing close contacts with members of the broader scientific community. Finally, we discuss the selection of and the financial support for graduate students.
