Tracking Control Design for Quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

The model of a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is nonlinear and dynamically unstable. A flight controller design is proposed on the basis of Lyapunov stability theory which guarantees that all the states remain and reach on the sliding surfaces. The control strategy uses sliding mode with a backstepping control to perform the position and attitude tracking control. This proposed controller is simple and effectively enhance the performance of quadrotor UAV. In order to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed control method, White Gaussian Noise and aerodynamic moment disturbances are taken into account. The performance of the nonlinear control method is evaluated by comparing the performance with developed linear quadratic regulator and existing backstepping control technique and proportional-integral-derivative from the literature. The comparative performance results demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy for the quadrotor UAV.

In this paper, an adaptive fault-tolerant attitude tracking controller based on reinforcement learning is developed for flying-wing unmanned aerial vehicle subjected to actuator faults and saturation. At first, the attitude dynamic model is separated into two dynamic subsystems as slow and fast dynamic subsystems based on the principle of time scale separation. Secondly, backstepping technique is adopted to design the controller. For the purpose of attitude angle constraints, the control technique based on Barrier Lyapunov is used to design controller of slow dynamic subsystem. Considering the optimization of the fast dynamic subsystem, this paper introduces an adaptive reinforcement learning control method in which neural network is used to approximate the long-term performance index and lumped fault dynamic. It is shown that this control algorithm can satisfy the requirements of attitude tracking subjected to the control constraints and the stability of the system is proved from Lyapunov stability theory. The simulation results demonstrate that the developed fault-tolerant scheme is useful and has more smooth control effect compared with fault-tolerant controller based on sliding mode theory.

Abstract When an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) navigates reactively over an unknown land, it may encounter terrains that require aggressive maneuver to keep the designed coasting speed while staying on the path. During this execution of the aggressive maneuver, the UAV can experience singularity. In this article, a vertical loop aggressive maneuver performed by a quadrotor UAV is investigated. Due to the physical configuration of the quadrotor, the conventional modeling and tracking control method may not be desirable if certain requirements, such as fast coasting speed and sharp turns, are imposed. In this work, a new modeling and maneuver control method, which is called the controlled loop path following (CLPF) method is developed. As shown in numerical examples, the proposed singularity-free model and control method enables a quadrotor to be operated in aggressive maneuverability with features like automatic flipping and precise trajectory following.

An output feedback observer-based dynamic surface controller is presented for attitude tracking problem of the quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle, which is subject to measurement noise and external disturbances. The dynamics model of the quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle is firstly introduced with the quaternion representation. Subsequently, a nonlinear augmented observer is introduced for simultaneously estimating the unavailable states and uncertain disturbances from the measurement of system output. The output feedback controller based on the nonlinear augmented observer is designed with the dynamic surface control technique. The Lyapunov stability analysis shows that the attitude tracking performance is ensured and all signals of the closed-loop system remain bounded. Finally, simulative and experimental results are carried out to illustrate, compared with other observer-based controller, the effectiveness of the proposed method is better.

Abstract This study is part of ongoing work on situational awareness and autonomy of a 16’ WAM-V USV. The objective of this work is to determine the potential and merits of application of two different station-keeping controllers for a fixed-pose motion control of the USV. The assessment includes performance and power consumption metrics tested under harsh environmental disturbances to evaluate the robustness of the control methods. The first is a nonlinear trajectory-tracking control method based on the sliding-mode control technique, while the second method uses a machine-learning approach based on Deep Reinforcement Learning. Results from both the approaches are compared for various case studies.

A novel method of disturbance observer-based integral backstepping control is proposed for the two-tank liquid level system with external disturbances. The problem of external disturbances can be settled in this paper. Firstly, the mathematical model of the two-tank liquid level system is established based on fluid mechanics and principle of mass conservation. Secondly, an integral backstepping control strategy is designed in order to ensure liquid level tracking performance by making the tracking errors converge to zero in finite time. Thirdly, a disturbance observer is designed for the two-tank liquid level system with external disturbances. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experiment. By doing so, the simulation and experimental results prove that the scheme of disturbance observer-based integral backstepping control strategy can suppress external disturbances more effective than the disturbance observer-based sliding mode control method and has better dynamic and steady performance of the two-tank liquid level system.

This article studies an output feedback attitude tracking control problem for rigid spacecraft in the presence of parameter uncertainties and external disturbances. First, an anti-unwinding attitude control law is designed using the integral sliding mode control technique to achieve accurate tracking responses and robustness against inertia uncertainties and external disturbances. Next, the derived control law is combined with a suitable tuning law to relax the knowledge about the bounds of uncertainties and disturbances. The stability results are rigorously proved using the Lyapunov stability theory. In addition, a new finite-time sliding mode observer is developed to estimate the first time derivative of attitude. A new adaptive output feedback attitude controller is designed based on the estimated results, and angular velocity measurements are not required in the design process. A Lyapunov-based analysis is provided to demonstrate the uniformly ultimately bounded stability of the observer errors. Numerical simulations are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control method.
