During the civil war (1975-1992), Lebanon faced total destruction that produced a negative impact on the urban growth of the Lebanese cities. The war generated some paralyzes that still produce adverse effects on the Lebanese people. Public infrastructure, public spaces, and the national public heritage, which are fundamental resources of the Lebanese society, currently are still not properly safeguard and managed by the local government. Understanding and enhancing the values of the Lebanese public resources is an indispensable tool for the development of the contemporary Lebanese society that can influence the future expansion, the revitalization and the shaping of new contemporary urban planning approach. How can we envision the future directions of the Lebanese public resources to influence the development of the Lebanese country while advocating for sustainable cities? This research tries to identify the main values, trends, influences, and ideologies linked with the public values, that should be considered and adopted to shape the development of contemporary growth in Lebanon.

The focus of this work is on the root causes of the current lack of African American/non-Hispanic Black (NHB) men in the field of medicine and, especially, in pediatric medicine. The lack of diversity could serve to the detriment of the future directions of pediatric medicine. With supporting data, we argue that the low statistics of NHB men in the field reflect a social issue that can be resolved by the action of pediatricians across America. Therefore, we are convinced that the included information and suggested strategies are a valuable contribution to all scientific communities. Success of NHB male inclusion in medicine ultimately benefits the health of the public by facilitating cultural competence and increasing racial and ethnic concordance.

This chapter reflects on the future directions that arbitration might take. The privatization of justice through arbitration no doubt has advantages. However, privatized justice all too readily looks like justice for hire. So is privatized justice to be promoted, or should it be restrained? A fair reply is, it depends. The answers one gives in the debate over arbitration, as in so many debates over institutions that affect the public interest, are often shaped by one’s ideological starting point. Ultimately, arbitrators and the parties who call upon them should remain conscious of both arbitration’s promise and its limits, if they mean this noble institution well.

Abstract Background Global mental health is a widely used term describing initiatives in policies, research and practice to improve the mental health of people worldwide. It has been gaining momentum over the last 10 years, reflected in increasing funding opportunities, training programmes, and publications. In light of the rising importance of global mental health and the various uncertainties about its future directions, this paper explores what the future may hold for global mental health in 30 years’ time. Method A scenario planning method was used, involving a workshop with experts from four continents and a range of backgrounds, including clinical and academic psychiatry, psychology, art and music therapy, service user advisory role, funder of global health research and post-graduate students. Results Six distinct scenarios that describe potential future situations were developed: universal standards for care; worldwide coordination of research; making use of diversity; focus on social factors; globalised care through technology; mental health as a currency in global politics. Conclusions These scenarios consider different social, economic, scientific and technological drivers and focus on distinct aspects. Some reflect a global application of possible trends in mental health, whilst others apply general global developments to mental health care. They are not fixed forecasts, but instead may help to promote discussion and debate about further developments and decisions.

ABSTRACTThe Presidential Address argues that, by acting in the public interest, the power of actuaries to benefit individuals financially can become a competitive advantage for the profession. This theme is explored by reference to professionalism being under threat, the negative impact of professional negligence claims, the need for unity in the profession, nationally and internationally, and the consequences for our education. The future of the profession will be brighter, and can be expansionist, if actuaries are recognised and valued for serving the public interest in the wider fields, but this will require effective public relations.

This special issue examines welfare programs as sites where Europe’s increasingly diverse societies are being shaped and negotiated. It zooms in on parenting as a central governmental domain where concerns about, and hopes for, the future of society intersect with notions of citizenship, family care, welfare, and deservingness of public resources. In this introduction to the special issue, we draw out three paradoxical orders that shape the encounters between migrant parents and welfare actors we have studied. One is concerned with the tension between the universal and difference, the other with the re-articulation of the public and the private, and a third with irreconcilable social and institutional demands. This helps us understand how Europe’s diverse societies are being shaped on the ground, beyond the often strongly racialized, nationalist rhetoric that has come to dominate public debates.
