The State of Nebraska Co-Lead agencies, who are responsible for developing statewide early intervention policies, rolled out professional development for two evidence-based strategies across several pilot sites. Implications of these strategies for child/family assessment, Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) development, and Early Intervention service delivery were examined utilizing family (n=30) and professional interviews (n=50), and analyses of IFSPs (n=30). The results of this mixed method study indicate widespread strategy implementation with fidelity fosters early working relationships with families and enables teams to generate, using family members’ own words, a robust group of high-quality child and family IFSP outcomes. Family engagement in planning services such as identifying service providers and setting the frequency and length of home visits was limited. In addition, further professional development is needed to strengthen use of routines-based interventions during home visits and promote family-professional collaboration to monitor child/family progress. Implications for systematic scale-up of evidence-based practices as a function of state policy implementation are reported.

A number of autism intervention practices have been demonstrated to be effective. However, the use of unsupported practices persists in community early intervention settings. Recent research has suggested that personal, professional and workplace factors may influence intervention choices. The aim of this research was to investigate knowledge and use of strategies, organisational culture, individual attitudes, sources of information and considerations informing intervention choices by early intervention providers. An online survey was completed by 72 early intervention providers from four organisations across Australia. Providers reported high levels of trust and access of information from internal professional development, therapists and external professional development. A range of considerations including child factors, family values and research were rated as important in informing intervention choices. Participants reported greater knowledge and use of evidence-based and emerging practices than unsupported. Levels of use were linked to levels of knowledge, as well as some organisational and attitudinal factors. Areas for future research and implications are discussed.

This article describes a pilot study conducted to examine parent satisfaction with professionals who provided early intervention services to rural families. Professionals working with infants and young children with disabilities were surveyed to determine their orientation towards a family systems approach to working with families. Interventionists provided information about the degree to which they perceived themselves involving parents in the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) process. Parents were also questioned about their satisfaction with the services which both they and their child received. Results showed that parents appeared to be equally satisfied with interventionists regardless of the degree of orientation towards a family systems model of intervention. Implications for service delivery and further research are discussed.

Teaching caregivers to support their young children’s language development is recommended as an effective early language intervention, and caregiver-implemented interventions are recognized as evidence-based. However, as the natural change agents for training and coaching caregivers, early intervention (EI) service providers are in need of professional development to effectively coach caregivers to use interventions with their child. The purpose of this study was to examine the Coaching Caregivers Professional Development program (CoCare PD) in which researchers train and coach EI service providers via telepractice in caregiver coaching, a set of skills useful in nurturing partnerships with families to support caregivers’ use of evidence-based practices with their young children with disabilities. A single-case research study across four EI service providers was conducted and findings support a functional relation between training and coaching EI service providers via telepractice and providers’ use of coaching practices with families on their caseload.

Background Families are a fundamental aspect in the current perspective of Early Intervention, and knowing their opinion with quantitative and qualitative research is necessary for its improvement. The objective of this research was to evaluate the quality of the service perceived in Early Intervention Centers and its relationship with satisfaction and future intention, as well as to identify factors that are associated with the perception of users. Methods A measurement model of 50 items and an open question to gather qualitative information was used in a sample of 233 participants. A confirmatory factor analysis and a regression analysis were conducted. Regarding the qualitative data, the information was subjected to a thematic content analysis in order to delve into the perception of the participants. Results The model showed a satisfactory fit and the regression analysis indicated that treatment rooms (β =  − 0.28) and adaptation of activities (β = 0.27) have greater weight with respect to satisfaction, whereas for future intention, the factors of greater weight were adaptation of activities (β = 0.23) and location (β = 0.20). The qualitative analysis showed three themes: facilitators, barriers and suggestions for improvement. Within facilitators, the participants were satisfied with the Early Intervention professionals, and they made improvement suggestions for the detected barriers to improve the facilities and the follow-up of the child. Conclusions The study offers a wide perspective of the perception of the service with an active participation of families in the treatment within the Early Intervention service. This will allow professionals in Early Intervention, service providers and researchers to consider the families as intervention agents capable of providing their opinion and making decisions, and not only as passive elements.

Best-practice recommendations for young children at high likelihood of autism include active involvement of caregivers in intervention. However, the use of evidence-based parent-mediated interventions in community practice remains limited. Preliminary evidence suggests that Project ImPACT for Toddlers demonstrates positive parent and child outcomes in community settings. Project ImPACT for Toddlers was adapted specifically for toddlers and teaches parents of young children strategies to build their child’s social, communication, and play skills in daily routines. This study reports implementation outcomes from the initial community rollout of Project ImPACT for Toddlers and examines the system-wide intervention reach, with the goal of informing continued community sustainment and scale-up. Participants include 38 community providers who participated in a Project ImPACT for Toddlers’ training study who completed an implementation survey and semi-structured interviews after approximately 3 months of community implementation. Participants perceived the training model as acceptable and appropriate, and identified several strengths of the approach. Interview themes also supported the feasibility, acceptability, and utility of the intervention in community settings. Quantitative findings complemented the thematic results from interviews. Intervention reach data indicate an increasing number of agencies delivering and families receiving Project ImPACT for Toddlers. Efforts to scale-up evidence-based interventions in early intervention should continue to build upon the model of the Bond, Regulate, Interact, Develop, Guide, and Engage Collaborative. Lay abstract Expert recommendations for toddlers who are likely to develop autism include caregivers being actively involved in the services children receive. However, many services available in the community may not follow these recommendations. Evidence suggests that an intervention named Project ImPACT for Toddlers demonstrates positive parent and child outcomes for families in the community. Participants perceived the training model as acceptable and appropriate, and identified the group-based model of training, comprehensive materials, and agency support as strengths of the approach. Survey findings complemented the results from the interviews. Data indicate an increasing number of agencies and families accessing Project ImPACT for Toddlers. Efforts to expand evidence-based intervention in early intervention should continue to build upon the model used for Project ImPACT for Toddlers.

Aims and MethodTo examine the effectiveness of integrating evidence-based supported employment into an early intervention service for young people with first-episode psychosis. Demographic, clinical and vocational data were collected over a 12-month period to evaluate the effect on vocational outcomes at 6 months and 12 months of the employment of a vocational specialist, and to assess model fidelity.ResultsFollowing vocational profiling and input from the vocational specialist and the team, there were significant increases in the proportion of clients engaged in work or educational activity over the first 6 months of the intervention, and in a subsample over a second 6-month period. The evidence-based Supported Employment Fidelity Scale was used to measure the degree of implementation, which scored 71, signifying ‘good implementation’.Clinical ImplicationsThe results suggest that implementing evidence-based supported employment within an early intervention service increases employment and education opportunities for patients within the service.

AbstractThis paper examines the concept of early intervention in psychosis at primary and secondary prevention levels. Examples of early intervention service models from different countries are presented and we discuss current evidence for efficacy. We highlight the Irish experience of early intervention to date, and discuss future implementation of early intervention services in Ireland.
