Background: Iron deficiency anemia is a micronutrient problem and the prevalence is still high. Catfish oil (Pangasius hypophthalmus) is a natural source of heme iron which can improve body iron levels.Objectives: This study was aimed to examine and analyze the effect of catfish oil on ferritin and sTfR levels in male wistar rats with iron deficiency anemia models.Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on male wistar rats which were divided into groups C- (standard feed), C+ (standard feed but had the iron removed), X1 (standard feed without iron but was supplemented with catfish oil), X2 (standard feed without iron but was supplemented with ferrous sulfate) for 14 days. Ferritin and sTfR levels were measured before and after intervention using ELISA.Results: The study showed an increase ferritin levels in X1 (21.87 ng/ml ±0.76), X2 (24.47 ng/ml ±0.54) and there was no significant difference between the two (p=0.069; p>0.05); a decrease in C- (0.25 ng/ml ±0.43), C+ (0.32 ng/ml ±0.059) (p=0.00; p<0.05). The sTfR levels decreased before and after intervention (p=0.00; p<0.05) in C+ (0.24 μ/mL ±0.99), X1 (60.66 μ/mL ±0.29), X2 (62.10 μ/mL ±0.90) and increased in C- (0.40 μ/mL ±0.97).Conclusions: The study indicates ferritin levels increased in the rats receiving catfish oil is not different from the rats that received ferrous sulfate and sTfR levels decreased significantly in wistar rats with iron deficiency anemia receiving catfish oil although the results were not as good as ferrous sulfate supplementation

Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common type of anemia related to malnutrition worldwide. It represents a major problem in developing countries, especially in Egypt. Ferric pyrophosphate (FPP) is a water-insoluble iron compound often used to fortify infant cereals and chocolate drink powders. It causes no adverse color and flavor changes to food vehicles. This study was done to compare the efficacy of FPP (micro dispersed iron) and ferrous sulfate (FS) in treating childhood IDA. Materials and Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted on 58 anemic children visiting the outpatient clinic, pediatric department of Menoufia University hospitals from March 2017 to June 2019. The inclusion criteria of the involved children were age 2 - 12 years and the diagnosis of IDA. Patients with other types of anemia were excluded from the study. Verbal permission was obtained from the parents of the children according to the ethical committee of Menoufia University. Patients were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group1 included 29 children who were treated with FPP and group2 included 29 children who were treated with oral traditional iron in the form of FS. Complete blood count and iron profile were recorded before and after 8 weeks of treatment. Results: The results showed no statistically significant difference between the FPP group and the FS group regarding clinical examinations (P-value > 0.05). There was no significant difference regarding hemoglobin, serum iron, and serum ferritin between the FPP and the FS groups after treatment (P-value> 0.05). However, side effects were significantly higher in the FS group (P-value > 0.001). Conclusion: Micro dispersed iron could be used as an alternative therapy for children with IDA who refuse oral iron therapy in a liquid form with more tolerability and fewer side effects.

The article provides the definition of iron deficiency anemia (IDA), discusses the mechanisms of influence of iron deficiency during pregnancy, as well as the main reasons for the development of IDA in the practice of an obstetrician-gynecologist, accompanied by a significant increase in the physiological need for iron. Methods for the correction and prevention of iron deficiency are described, and differences in the absorption of heme and non-heme iron are indicated.Also, this article reveals the advantages of prevention and dietary correction of iron deficiency states using a combination of heme iron and ferrous sulfate - Richter FerroBio.

Abstract Background Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a major public health problem in Egypt, especially among pregnant women. The most commonly used treatment is oral administration of iron as ferrous sulfate which often fails to exert significant effects with many adverse effects. Lactoferrin is a glycoprotein which belongs to proteins capable of binding and transferring iron. This study was done to evaluate the effectiveness, safety and acceptability of lactoferrin in comparison to ferrous sulfate. Methods This randomized clinical trial was conducted in outpatient clinic under supervision of department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of medicine, Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt from August 2019 to February 2020. 140 women with iron deficiency anemia in second trimester were recruited and randomly assigned to either group. First group received lactoferrin 200 mg sachets once daily and second group received 100 mg of dried ferrous sulfate capsules twice daily for 4 consecutive weeks. Hemoglobin, hematocrit levels, mean corpuscular volume, and serum ferritin were assessed before and after therapy. Results The increase in haemoglobin was significantly higher in lactoferrin group. Number of cases achieved Hb level ≥10.5 was significantly more frequent in lactoferrin group. Compliance was significantly more frequent in lactoferrin group than in ferrous sulfate group. Maternal side effects were significantly less frequent in lactoferrin group than in ferrous sulfate group. Conclusion Oral lactoferrin is well tolerated and effective as compared to traditional treatment by ferrous sulfate.

Abstract Background Iron deficiency anemia disrupts the concentration of adolescent girls; reduces their academic achievement, productivity, and physical strength, and increases the risk of infection. This research aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of the PRECEDE model nutrition education on iron deficiency anemia among female students of Fasa City, Fars Province, Iran. Methods This quasi-experimental study was done on 160 students (80 experimental and 80 control groups) who were selected using a random sampling method in Fasa City, Fars Province, Iran, in 2018–2019. The educational intervention included six sessions based PRECEDE model for 45 or 50 min. A scale of this study consisted of two parts; demographic information, and PRECEDE constructs were used to determine the nutritional behaviors status concluding preventing iron deficiency anemia and hemoglobin, hematocrit, and ferritin blood level in two (before and 4 months after intervention) times. Results In the experimental group of the students the mean age was 13.85 + 1.72 years and in the controlled group was 13.60 + 1.81 years. Moreover, there was no significant difference in the PRECEDE constructs, and nutritional behaviors preventing iron deficiency anemia before the intervention in two groups of study. However, the experimental group showed a significant increase 4 months after the intervention. Also, there was no significant difference in the mean score of hemoglobin, hematocrit, and ferritin blood level between the two groups before the intervention. However, in ferritin level, a significant increase was shown in 4 months after the intervention in the experiential group. Conclusions Based on results, the nutrition intervention education base on PRECEDE model has a positive effect to improve iron deficiency anemia preventive behaviors in female students.

AbstractLactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding globular glycoprotein that is structurally and chemically similar to serum transferrin. Many studies have been done to evaluate the effect of oral LF administration on iron deficiency anemia (IDA) with controversial results. This study was designed to compare the efficacy of LF versus oral ferrous sulfate (OFS) therapy in the treatment of children with IDA. A significant increase in mean hemoglobin and serum iron concentrations was noted in the group that received oral bovine LF (11.06 ± 0.96 and 42.79 ± 6.14, respectively) versus the group that received OFS (10.24 ± 0.57 and 28.94 ± 5.05, respectively, with p < 0.001 for each) after 30 days of the treatment with fewer side effects (9.3 vs. 33.3% with p = 0.043). Oral bovine LF is a more effective and safer alternative in treating iron deficiency and IDA compared with OFS with clinical benefits of fewer side effects and better patient compliance.

Experience with a new oral iron-carbohydrate complex (Jefron) in the treatment of iron-deficiency anemia shows that the therapeutic results are inferior to those obtainable with ferrous sulfate. Many children showed no response after months of treatment with this drug and when subsequently placed on ferrous sulfate therapy showed a rapid rise in hemoglobin to normal levels. Preliminary studies suggest that poor gastrointestinal absorption may be a factor in the inadequate therapeutic effects.

Iron amino acid chelates, such as iron glycinate chelates, have been developed to be used as food fortificants and therapeutic agents in the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia. Ferrous bis-glycine chelate (FeBC), ferric tris-glycine chelate, ferric glycinate, and ferrous bis-glycinate hydrochloride are available commercially. FeBC is the most studied and used form. Iron absorption from FeBC is affected by enhancers and inhibitors of iron absorption, but to a lesser extent than ferrous sulfate. Its absorption is regulated by iron stores. FeBC is better absorbed from milk, wheat, whole maize flour, and precooked corn flour than is ferrous sulfate. Supplementation trials have demonstrated that FeBC is efficacious in treating iron deficiency anemia. Consumption of FeBC-fortified liquid milk, dairy products, wheat rolls, and multi-nutrient beverages is associated with an improvement of iron status. The main limitations to the widespread use of FeBC in national fortification programs are the cost and the potential for promoting organoleptic changes in some food matrices. Additional research is required to establish the bioavailability of FeBC in different food matrices. Other amino acid chelates should also be evaluated. Finally there is an urgent need for more rigorous efficacy trials designed to define the relative merits of amino acid chelates when compared with bioavailable iron salts such as ferrous sulfate and ferrous fumarate and to determine appropriate fortification levels
