Abstract Diffusion nitrided layers produced on titanium and its alloys are widely studied in terms of their application for cardiac and bone implants. The influence of the structure, the phase composition, topography and surface morphology on their biological properties is being investigated. The article presents the results of a study of the topography (nanotopography) of the surface of TiN+Ti2N+αTi(N) nitrided layers produced in low-temperature plasma on Ti6Al4V titanium alloy and their influence on the adhesion of blood platelets and their aggregates. The TEM microstructure of the produced layers have been examined and it was demonstrated that the interaction between platelets and the surface of the titanium implants subjected to glow-discharge nitriding can be shaped via modification of the roughness parameters of the external layer of the TiN titanium nitride nanocrystalline zone.

The paper presents results of investigations into the structure and corrosion resistance of Ti-Al diffusion layers produced on two phase (a+b) Ti6Al4V alloy by Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD). The process was carried out in aluminium chloride (AlCl3) mixed with argon atmosphere. Surface topography and microstructure characterization of the coatings were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The local chemical composition witch 1 μm lateral resolution was measured via EDS. The phase content was investigated by X-ray diffraction and analysis of the chemical composition of the surface by XPS. Corrosion resistance was tested using the potentiodynamic method in 0.1M Na2SO4 and 0.1M H2SO4 solutions at the room temperature. Their resistance to high temperature at atmospheric pressure was tested by 24-hours cycling to 700°C. The results indicate that the layers produced on the Ti6Al4V titanium alloy exhibit a very good adhesion combined with exceptional corrosion resistance, especially high at high temperatures.

Peri-implantitis has become a common complication, accompanied by soft tissue inflammation. Porphyromonas gingivalis infection is the major cause of inflammation and progressive bone loss in the jaws. The surface property of titanium implants is a key factor in the alteration of osseointegration and P. gingivalis adhesion. However, the interplay between P. gingivalis and the surface properties of implants, subjected to different treatments, is not well described. Therefore, we focused on the surface properties of titanium implants; titanium disks that were autoclaved alone were used as controls. Those that were autoclaved and then subjected to low-temperature plasma (LTP) at 85 W and 13.56 MHz and with 100 mTorr of argon gas at room temperature for 15 min formed the experimental group. LTP-treated disks had smoother surfaces than the control group disks. The physical properties, such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), demonstrated the surface composition was changed after LTP treatment. Further, osteoblastic cell proliferation enhancement was observed in the LTP-treated titanium surfaces. The results also revealed relatively less P. gingivalis adhesion to the LTP-treated disks than on the control disks on spectrophotometry and SEM. These findings clarified that P. gingivalis adhesion is reduced in implants subjected to LTP treatment. Thus, LTP treatment of peri-implantitis with the settings used in the present study is an option that needs further investigation.
