Abstract The shell and coil heat exchangers are commonly used in heating, ventilation, nuclear industry, process plant, heat recovery and air conditioning systems. This type of recuperators benefits from simple construction, the low value of pressure drops and high heat transfer. In helical coil, centrifugal force is acting on the moving fluid due to the curvature of the tube results in the development. It has been long recognized that the heat transfer in the helical tube is much better than in the straight ones because of the occurrence of secondary flow in planes normal to the main flow inside the helical structure. Helical tubes show good performance in heat transfer enhancement, while the uniform curvature of spiral structure is inconvenient in pipe installation in heat exchangers. Authors have presented their own construction of shell and tube heat exchanger with intensified heat transfer. The purpose of this article is to assess the influence of the surface modification over the performance coefficient and effectiveness. The experiments have been performed for the steady-state heat transfer. Experimental data points were gathered for both laminar and turbulent flow, both for co current- and countercurrent flow arrangement. To find optimal heat transfer intensification on the shell-side authors applied the number of transfer units analysis.

Abstract: Helically coiled heat exchangers are globally used in various industrial applications for their high heat transfer performance and compact size. Nanofluids can provide the excellent thermal performance in helical coil heat exchangers. Research studies on heat transfer enhancement have gained serious momentum during recent years and have been proposed many techniques by different research groups [1]. A fluid with higher thermal conductivity has been developed to increase the efficiency of heat exchangers. The dispersion of 1-100nm sized solid nanoparticles in the traditional heat transfer fluids, termed as nanofluids, exhibit substantial higher convective heat transfer than that of traditional heat transfer fluids. Nanofluid is a heat transfer fluid which is the combination of nanoparticles and base fluid that can improve the performance of heat exchanger systems. In this present paper the efforts are made to understand that how to compare the heat transfer rate in Copper helically coiled tube and squared coiled tube heat exchanger using Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide Nano fluid by studying research papers of various authors. A heat exchanger is a device used to transfer thermal energy between two or more liquids, between a solid surface and a liquid, or between solid particles and a liquid at different temperatures and in thermal contact where shell and tube heat exchangers contain a large number of tubes packed in a jacket whose axes are parallel to those of the shell. Heat transfer occurs when one fluid flows into the pipes while the other flows out of the pipes through the jacket. In industry, three-tube heat exchanger tubes are used as condensers, evaporators, sub cooler, heat recovery heat exchangers, etc. The three concentric tube heat exchanger is a constructively modified version of the double concentric tube heat exchanger as an intermediate tube adds some advantages over the double tube heat exchangers in that it is larger tube surface area heat transfer per unit of length.  In the present study, the triple tube heat exchanger is further modified by inserting helical baffle over the surface of one of the tubes and observed turbulence flow which may lead to high heat transfer rates between the fluids of heat exchanger. Further, the Reynolds number, Nusselt number, friction factor of the flow at different mass flow rates of the hot fluid while keeping a constant mass flow rate of cold and normal temperature fluids were calculated. It was found that as the mass flow rate of the fluid increases the Reynolds number increases, the turbulence in the flow will increase which will cause the intermixing of the fluid, higher the rate of intermixing, more will be the heat transfer of the system.

Heat transfer analysis of microencapsulated phase change material (MCPM) slurry flowing through a helical coil heat exchanger was carried out numerically. MPCM slurry at different mass fractions with known thermal and physical properties was chosen as heat transfer fluid (HTF). MPCM slurries can carry significantly higher thermal load when the PCM undergoes phase change within a specified temperature range. However, little is known as to how MPCM behave in helical coil heat exchangers. Helical coil heat exchangers are being used widely in many industrial applications including air conditioning systems due to their compactness and high thermal effectiveness. Enhancing the heat transfer rate of coil heat exchanger by using MPCM slurry without altering the existing parameters of coil heat exchangers such as shell diameter should lead to energy savings due to reductions in HTF pumping energy demands at identical heat loads. The ultimate goal of this study is to show a significant enhancement in heat transfer when MPCM slurry is pumped through helical coil heat exchangers. Unlike traditional HTF used in helical coil heat exchangers, the proposed MPCM slurry could alter the flow structure and the internal convection by inducing and enhancing the formation of secondary flows, as a result of phase change in the microencapsulated phase change material. Specifically, a three dimensional numerical study was undertaken to understand the effects of the helical coil heat exchanger geometry and the HTF flow characteristics on heat transfer enhancement. Baseline numerical simulations were conducted using water as HTF in order to compare with MPCM slurry numerical results. The numerical model was solved based on the finite volume method. The temperature-dependent properties of MPCM slurry and boundary conditions were considered. The promising results of this numerical study demonstrate the importance of formulated HTF and the geometry of the heat exchanger on the heat transfer enhancement and energy savings.

The applications of heat exchangers are vast and the enhancement of heat transfer and compact size are the key factors for designing the heat exchangers in order to achieve energy savings. In the field of tubular heat exchangers one of the possible ways for reducing the space occupied by the exchanger is by bending tube axis in helical shape. This option is particularly suitable when construction simplicity is needed and the geometry of the place in which the exchanger has to be housed is the cylindrical one. In this paper, an attempt is made to enhance the heat transfer rate without application of any external power. This is achieved by providing the helical tube in tubes. The parameters influencing the nature of flow in a helical coil heat exchanger are the tube geometry namely pitch coil diameter, pitch and tube diameter. CFD analysis is carried out to study these geometry effects on heat transfer and hydraulic characteristics by varying Reynolds number (hot fluid). The CFD results of velocity and temperature distribution in the heat exchanger are used to estimate the Nusselt number and heat transfer coefficient. This helps to arrive at an optimum value of Reynolds number and Nusselt number for the corresponding tube-to-coil diameter ratios.

A marine seawater source heat pump is based on the relatively stable temperature of seawater, and uses it as the system’s cold and heat source to provide the ship with the necessary cold and heat energy. This technology is one of the important solutions to reduce ship energy consumption. Therefore, in this paper, the heat exchanger in the CO2 heat pump system with graphene nano-fluid refrigerant is experimentally studied, and the influence of related factors on its heat transfer enhancement performance is analyzed. First, the paper describes the transformation of the heat pump system experimental bench, the preparation of six different mass concentrations (0~1 wt.%) of graphene nanofluid and its thermophysical properties. Secondly, this paper defines graphene nanofluids as beneficiary fluids, the heat exchanger gains cold fluid heat exergy increase, and the consumption of hot fluid heat is heat exergy decrease. Based on the heat transfer efficiency and exergy efficiency of the heat exchanger, an exergy transfer model was established for a seawater source of tube heat exchanger. Finally, the article carried out a test of enhanced heat transfer of heat exchangers with different concentrations of graphene nanofluid refrigerants under simulated seawater constant temperature conditions and analyzed the test results using energy and an exergy transfer model. The results show that the enhanced heat transfer effect brought by the low concentration (0~0.1 wt.%) of graphene nanofluid is greater than the effect of its viscosity on the performance and has a good exergy transfer effectiveness. When the concentration of graphene nanofluid is too high, the resistance caused by the increase in viscosity will exceed the enhanced heat transfer gain brought by the nanofluid, which results in a significant decrease in the exergy transfer effectiveness.

The effect of geometrical features on the air-side heat transfer and friction characteristics of an industrial plain fin-and-tube heat exchanger is investigated by 3-D numerical modeling and simulations. The heat exchanger has been designed and employed as an intercooler in a gas power plant and is a large-size compact heat exchanger. Most of the available design correlations developed so far for plain fin–and–tube heat exchangers have been prepared for small-size exchangers and none of them fits completely to the current heat exchanger regarding the geometrical limitations of correlations. It is shown that neglecting these limitations and applying improper correlations may generate considerable amount of error in the design of such a large-size heat exchanger. The geometry required for numerical modeling is produced by Gambit® software and the boundary conditions are defined regarding the real operating conditions. Then, three-dimensional simulations based on the SIMPLE algorithm in laminar flow regime are performed by FLUENT™ code. The effect of fin pitch, tube pitch, and tube diameter on the thermo-hydraulic behavior of the heat exchanger is studied. Some variations in the design of the heat exchanger are suggested for optimization purposes. It is finally concluded that the current numerical model is a powerful tool to design and optimize of large-size plain fin-and-tube heat exchangers with acceptable accuracy.
