A Case Study on Intermediate CSL Learners’ Word Recognition Processes and Strategies in Contextual Reading Settings

Abstract This study investigates word recognition processes and strategies of intermediate learners of Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) in contextual reading settings. Two intermediate CSL learners were chosen as research participants, and think-aloud methods and retrospective interviews were used to collect data. The data were analyzed by using Moustakas’ data analysis procedure, Creswell’s three steps and Bogdon and Biklen’s data analysis methods. Results indicated that intermediate CSL learners go through different processes of word recognition as it might be automatic, based on context, pronunciation, previous knowledge and the meaning of characters, or, in case of word recognition failure, skipping the words or skipping them but reading them again later; and their word recognition strategies in contextual reading settings mainly include cognitive strategies and self-regulatory strategies. Among these strategies, cognitive strategies consist of direct transformation, translation, interpretation, guessing, inferring and finding key words; and self-regulatory strategies include metacognitive strategies, behavior regulating strategies, emotion regulating strategies and motivation regulating strategies. A model of intermediate CSL learners’ word recognition strategies can be constructed based on the results. The present study provides both theoretical and pedagogical implications in the field of CSL vocabulary acquisition and teaching.

Abstract This paper reports a case study that explores elementary learners’ reading anxiety over Chinese as a second language (CSL). Two elementary CSL learners were chosen as research participants. Lived experience descriptions, think-aloud, retrospective interviews, field observations, and research journal writings were used to investigate the sources of elementary CSL learners’ reading anxiety and the ways employed to reduce their reading anxiety. The data were analyzed by Moustakas’ (1994) data analysis procedures, Creswell’s (2007) three steps, and Bogdon & Biklen’s (1992) data analysis methods. Results show that elementary CSL learners do have reading anxiety in their reading process and the sources of the anxiety include cross-linguistic differences between English and Chinese expressions, lack of previous knowledge, difficult and complex vocabulary, wrong guesses, and comprehension difficulties. Both participants tried to use strategies such as guessing, looking up words, understanding two character words based on the meaning of each character, skipping and keeping reading, and using previous knowledge to predict the rest of the text to reduce their reading anxiety. The present study provides both theoretical and pedagogical implications in the field of CSL reading learning and teaching.

ABSTRACTSpeech is one of the speaking skills that we often encounter in society. In a speech sometimes there is an error when talking. This study aims to describe the presence of errors in pronunciation of diphthongs and vowels u in Ganjar Pranowo's speech, also the causes of errors in pronunciation of diphthongs and vowels u. Mistakes of speech, of course, often occur among the speech community. Both intentional and unintentional mistakes. Data analysis methods used in this research are case study research and descriptive research methods. This method is very suitable and suitable for examining speech errors in the speech of Ganjar Pranowo in the 74th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia. The results of this study indicate that there were mistyping during the speech.Keywords:diphthongs, vocals, speech, language errors, speechesABSTRAK Pidato merupakan salah satu keterampilan berbicara yang sering kita jumpai dalam masyarakat. Dalam berpidato terkadang terdapat adanya kesalahan pada saat berbicara. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan adanya kesalahan pengucapan huruf diftong dan vokal u pada pidato Ganjar Pranowo, juga penyebab terjadinya kesalahan pengucapan huruf diftong dan vokal u. Kesalahan berbicara tentu saja sering terjadi di antara masyarakat tutur. Baik kesalahan yang disengaja maupun tidak. Metode analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian studi kasus dan metode penelitian deskriptif. Metode ini sangat sesuai dan cocok untuk mengkaji kesalahan berbicara pada pidato Ganjar Pranowo dalam Rangka HUT Ke-74 Republik Indonesia. Abstrak: Permasalahan dalam penelitian ini yaitu dari jumlah lembaga PAUD yang ada diKota Banjarmasin belum semuanya memiliki perencanaan khususnya pada analisispeningkatan legalitas kelembagaan PAUD dan analisis kebutuhan pendidikan untuk anak usiadini (AUD). Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan studi kasus dengan analisis data deskrtifkuantitatif dan kualitataif. Hasil studi menunjukkan bahwa: i) Disdik Kota Banjarmasin danLembaga PAUD sampel tidak melakukan perencanaan yang baik untuk pendataan analisiskebutuhan pendidikan AUD; ii) Belum semua lembaga PAUD sampel memiliki izinoperasional dikarenakan adanya persyaratan yang belum dapat dipenuhi karena memerlukanbiaya yang cukup besar seperti, pembuatan akta notaris; iii) Belum semua lembaga PAUDmemiliki sarpras sesuai dengan pedoman sarana dan prasarana dari pusat; iv) untuk membantuketersediaan sarpras, Disdik Kota Banjarmasin sudah mengalokasikan dana APBD II berupabantuan RKB, rehab kelas rusak ringan dan berat, serta bantuan APE Dalam dan Luar berupabarang. Abstract: The problem in this study is from the number of early childhood institutions in thecity of Banjarmasin not all have plans in particular to the analysis of institutional legalityincrease early childhood education and educational needs analysis for early childhood (AUD).This study uses a case study approach to data analysis of quantitative and qualitative deskrtif.The study shows that: i) Disdik Banjarmasin and Institutions ECD sample is not doing betterplanning for data analysis AUD educational needs; ii) Not all the samples of early childhoodinstitutions have an operating permit because of the requirements can not be met because itrequires significant costs such as notary deed; iii) Not all early childhood institutions haveinfrastructure accordance with the guidelines of the central infrastructure; iv) to assist theavailability infrastructure, Disdik Banjarmasin already allocated budget II in the form ofclassroom assistance, rehabilitation of damaged light and heavy classes, as well as the In andOut APE assistance in the form of goods.

This research was conducted in order to test how much influence product quality, price and brand to the volume of sales at PT. Gemilang Jaya Bella bracelets Spring Bed Semarang. Independent variables include variable product quality, price and brand while the dependent variable is the volume of sales.In determining the data to be studied sampling technique used is the census. Census is a sampling technique when all members of the population used as a sample .. Respondents were selected is the consumer stores PT. Gemilang Jaya Bella bracelets Spring Bed Semarang. Thus obtained sample was 50 respondents. Data analysis methods used to perform hypothesis testing is multiple linear regression analysis.Based on the results of research that has been conducted on all data obtained, the importance of the research that 1). There is a positive and significant effect of the variable quality of the product (X1) to sales volume (Y). 2). There is a positive and significant impact on price variable (X2) to sales volume (Y). 3). There is a positive and significant impact on brand variables (X3) to sales volume (Y). 4). There is a positive and significant effect of the variable distribution channels (X4) to sales volume (Y)

This study aims to identify and analyze opportunities, challenges, constraints and efforts of vocational high school or Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) to create graduates especially accounting programs that are able to manage village funds. The object of the study are accounting program students of SMK PGRI 2 Cibinong. Data used in this study are primary data and secondary data. Data is collected using interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis methods use data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The results of this study show that the SMK PGRI 2 Cibinong Bogor aware of the opportunities for SMK graduates of the accounting program to fill the scarcity of skilled human resources to manage village funds. But teachers have less experience in the practice of village fund accounting so that they do not have confidence in  teaching. Other constraints are less discussion of government accounting in the accounting syllabus and the absence of a standard handbook/module for teachers to teach accounting subjects.
