Abstract The paper discusses transmission of the historical memories of the comparatively recent past across generations in Slovakia. It introduces the Slovak debate on the recent and difficult pasts, explains the basic theoretical stances, moves on to introduce the regions of the research and the methodology used and finally gives voice to young and older respondents whose information is commented and analyzed. The paper hopes to provide insights into the processes of memory transmission and past construction. As well, by using numerous quotes from the informants, it hopes to illustrate and substantiate the claim about the defects of the debates among the people of current post-socialist era in Slovakia.

At some undefined time in the fairly recent past central and western Madagascar witnessed a conceptual 'revolution' which had far-reaching political consequences. The religious beliefs and symbols which constituted the main ingredients of this 'revolution'--and probably also the people who propagated them--were in some way connected with the Zafindraminia-Antanosy and the Anteimoro of the southeastern and eastern coast. It is quite clear that these and similar groups had been strongly influenced by Islam and that they practiced what could perhaps be described as a corrupt or diluted Islam or a syncretic 'pagan' Muslim religion. (It is significant that as their name indicates the Zafindraminia claim descent from Raminia who they hold to have been the mother of Muhammad.) One of the main ingredients of this religion was the cult of the ody or guardian amulets, objects usually made of wood which are strikingly reminiscent of the so-called “charms” or “gris-gris” sold by Muslim clerics over much of Africa. Another ingredient is represented by the institution of ombiasy. The ombiasy (the main manufacturers of ody) whom the Frenchman Etienne de Flacourt at Fort-Dauphin in the seventeenth century took to be Muslim clerics were originally the “priests” (or the “devins guérisseurs,” according to Hubert Deschamps) of the Anteimoro and the Zafindraminia-Antanosy. Subsequently this institution was disseminated throughout nearly the whole of Madagascar. Yet another ingredient was the system of divination known as sikidy, which also spread to other parts of Madagascar, including Imerina and the Sakalava country. These beliefs, symbols, and institutions deeply influenced the people of the west coast (the present-day Sakalava country) and of central Madagascar (Imerina and Betsileo country).

The act of making links hand and eye, and connects the intellect to physical change. A sculptor carving stone requires precision of thought before deploying manual dexterity. The challenge for an architect until the recent past has been to communicate such thoughtfulness, embodied in a design, to the people who will make the building and its component parts. Making architecture and the pursuit of excellence in the physical delivery of quality in built projects is a challenging and collaborative process [2]. It is not possible to legislate for excellence, however it is possible to create contexts in which high-quality architecture is probable. By comparison, John Ruskin in The Seven Lamps of Architecture (1849) set his aspirations low: ‘We may not be able to command good, or beautiful, or inventive architecture, but we can command an honest architecture’.

The idea of cleansing the Moscow state, closely related to the idea of protecting the true Orthodox faith permeates the tale of people’s militia in 1611-1612 in the New Chronicler. The specifics of the story about the events of 1611-1612, observed in the New Chronicler, which found expression in a combination of motives, reflecting real actions of militia organizing, and motives of hoping for God’s help and with God’s help and miracle workers indicates that relatively recent past is quite deliberately transformed by the author into the system-constructed text, in which all elements are subject to two main ideas. It is not by chance that in the militia organizers personalities in 1611-1612 the author of the New Chronicler emphasizes exclusively the qualities that characterize them as people who deeply believe and act in the difficult events of The Time of Troubles in accordance with the basics and rules of Orthodox culture. In general, the New Chronicler reflected in the story about events in 1611-1612, established by the 30th years of the 17th century the events interpretation, turning the history of the people’s militia in the symbolic “sign”: victory was possible thanks to the “admonition” of the people, the return of the “fallen people” to the Orthodox fundamentals of good behavior, which was consecrated by the God’s help and miracle workers.

South Africa is widely admired for its peaceful transition from a period of discrimination and oppression to a legitimate functioning democracy in which human rights are recognized and protected by the Constitution and the courts. Nevertheless, it is still a country traumatized by its recent past. There is a great need for building and strengthening processes of development, reparation, reconciliation and the healing of painful memories. The country has just celebrated National Heritage Day, and these memorial occasions are important in reminding us all of how far we have come, and the people and events which brought us to this point.

This project is an ambitious attempt to review the tie between Chile and Rapanui according to law. According to Gonschor the people of Easter Island are entitled to obtain political decolonisation according to the United Nations' parameters and international treaties of which Chile is signatory. This means that the thesis supports the proposition that Easter Island is "the" Chilean colony in Oceania, a belief shared by an important, though so far unquantifiable number of the island's citizens who have internationally raised the question no fewer than three times, in the recent past...

Abstract This article examines the different versions of the Treaty which Khālid b. al-Wālid granted to the people of Damascus and notes the variations and textual discrepancies between them by examining both Muslim and non-Muslim sources. We demonstrate how the accounts share a common historical memory in recalling the issuance of treaties in the era of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. We argue that the original Treaty with the People of Damascus represented in all likelihood the template for all other treaties given to the inhabitants of Greater Syria, Jordan and Palestine, whose echoes can also be found resonating in Egypt and Iraq. Most important of all, by navigating through the competing and shared historical memories, we conclude that the original Treaty stipulated that the indigenous population’s churches neither be destroyed nor inhabited. We conclude by proposing that this standard policy was not just based on mere pragmatism, but also on some sort of written ordinance that originated with the Prophet Muḥammad.

Industrial pollution is one of the largest environmental and livelihood issues faced by developing societies. It has led to the mobilization of people to protest against it, in various forms, in accordance with their socio-political landscape. The case of Kerala State in India is no different. A number of studies related to environmental issues, dams and displacement, deforestation, et cetera have appeared in the recent past. However, regarding environmental movements against industrial pollution in India, studies are limited. The social problems related to industries had generally led to mobilization of affected people in various parts of the country. One such mobilization of the people affected by industrial pollution is the focus of this chapter. Even though Kerala is a less industrialized state in India, the industrialization model adopted by the government of Kerala was not sustainable and subsequently it has failed on many fronts. In this chapter the researcher has explored work on the issues related to the contemporary development practices of industrialization. This study is an attempt to underline the problems of unsustainable development and people’s protest against it.
