AbstractWe answer in the affirmative a question posed by Ivanov and Vassilev on the existence of a seven-dimensional quaternionic contact manifold with closed fundamental 4-form and non-vanishing torsion endomorphism. Moreover, we show an approach to the classification of seven-dimensional solvable Lie groups having an integrable left invariant quaternionic contact structure. In particular, we prove that the unique seven-dimensional nilpotent Lie group admitting such a structure is the quaternionic Heisenberg group.

In this paper the complete classification of left invariant metrics of arbitrary signature on solvable Lie groups is given. By identifying the Lie algebra with the algebra of left invariant vector fields on the corresponding Lie group ??, the inner product ??,?? on g = Lie G extends uniquely to a left invariant metric ?? on the Lie group. Therefore, the classification problem is reduced to the problem of classification of pairs (g, ??,??) known as the metric Lie algebras. Although two metric algebras may be isometric even if the corresponding Lie algebras are non-isomorphic, this paper will show that in the 4-dimensional solvable case isometric means isomorphic. Finally, the curvature properties of the obtained metric algebras are considered and, as a corollary, the classification of flat, locally symmetric, Ricciflat, Ricci-parallel and Einstein metrics is also given.

AbstractIn this paper we deal with the class $$\mathcal {C}$$ C of decomposable solvable Lie groups having dimension six. We determine those Lie groups in $$\mathcal {C}$$ C and their subgroups which are the multiplication groups Mult(L) and the inner mapping groups Inn(L) for three-dimensional connected simply connected topological loops L. This result completes the classification of the at most 6-dimensional solvable multiplication Lie groups of the loops L. Moreover, we obtain that every at most 3-dimensional connected topological proper loop having a solvable Lie group of dimension at most six as its multiplication group is centrally nilpotent of class two.

AbstractLet G be a second countable locally compact group possessing a normal subgroup N with G/N abelian. We prove that if G/N is discrete then G has T1 primitive ideal space if and only if the G-quasiorbits in Prim N are closed. This condition on G-quasiorbits arose in Pukanzky's work on connected and simply connected solvable Lie groups where it is equivalent to the condition of Auslander and Moore that G be type R on N (-nilradical). Using an abstract version of Pukanzky's arguments due to Green and Pedersen we establish that if G is a connected and simply connected Lie group then Prim G is T1 whenever G-quasiorbits in [G, G] are closed.

AbstractIn this paper we give an explicit formula for the flag curvature of homogeneous Randers spaces of Douglas type and apply this formula to obtain some interesting results. We first deduce an explicit formula for the flag curvature of an arbitrary left invariant Randersmetric on a two-step nilpotent Lie group. Then we obtain a classification of negatively curved homogeneous Randers spaces of Douglas type. This results, in particular, in many examples of homogeneous non-Riemannian Finsler spaces with negative flag curvature. Finally, we prove a rigidity result that a homogeneous Randers space of Berwald type whose flag curvature is everywhere nonzero must be Riemannian.

For a nilpotent Lie group G and its closed subgroup L, Lipsman [13] conjectured that the L-action on some homogeneous space of G is proper in the sense of Palais if and only if the action is free. Nasrin [14] proved this conjecture assuming that G is a 2-step nilpotent Lie group. However, Lipsman's conjecture fails for the 4-step nilpotent case. This paper gives an affirmative solution to Lipsman's conjecture for the 3-step nilpotent case.

Abstract We study the natural functional $F=\frac {\operatorname {scal}^2}{|\operatorname {Ric}|^2}$ on the space of all non-flat left-invariant metrics on all solvable Lie groups of a given dimension $n$. As an application of properties of the beta operator, we obtain that solvsolitons are the only global maxima of $F$ restricted to the set of all left-invariant metrics on a given unimodular solvable Lie group, and beyond the unimodular case, we obtain the same result for almost-abelian Lie groups. Many other aspects of the behavior of $F$ are clarified.

A certain nilpotent Lie group plays an important role in the study of the foundations of quantum mechanics ([Wey]) and of the theory of theta series (see [C], [I] and [Wei]). This work shows how theta series are applied to decompose the natural unitary representation of a Heisenberg group.

AbstractThis is partly an expository paper, where the authors’ work on pseudoriemannian Einstein metrics on nilpotent Lie groups is reviewed. A new criterion is given for the existence of a diagonal Einstein metric on a nice nilpotent Lie group. Classifications of special classes of Ricci-˛at metrics on nilpotent Lie groups of dimension [eight.tf] are obtained. Some related open questions are presented.

In this investigation, we present symmetry algebras of the canonical geodesic equations of the indecomposable solvable Lie groups of dimension five, confined to algebras A 5 , 7 a b c to A 18 a . For each algebra, the related system of geodesics is provided. Moreover, a basis for the associated Lie algebra of the symmetry vector fields, as well as the corresponding nonzero brackets, are constructed and categorized.

Abstract In this paper we introduce the notion of complex isoparametric functions on Riemannian manifolds. These are then employed to devise a general method for constructing proper r-harmonic functions. We then apply this to construct the first known explicit proper r-harmonic functions on the Lie group semidirect products $${{\mathbb {R}}}^m \ltimes {{\mathbb {R}}}^n$$ R m ⋉ R n and $${{\mathbb {R}}}^m \ltimes \mathrm {H}^{2n+1}$$ R m ⋉ H 2 n + 1 , where $$\mathrm {H}^{2n+1}$$ H 2 n + 1 denotes the classical $$(2n+1)$$ ( 2 n + 1 ) -dimensional Heisenberg group. In particular, we construct such examples on all the simply connected irreducible four-dimensional Lie groups.
