AbstractTwo focus groups with six randomly selected students were conducted to understand the views and experiences of students taking a subject entitled “Service Leadership” at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Several observations were highlighted from the findings. First, students generally had positive views of the subject. Second, students felt that they had positive experience in the subject. Third, the instructors were seen in a positive light by the students. Fourth, the students perceived the subject to be beneficial to their development. Fifth, students had positive impression about the subject. Finally, recommendations regarding time allocation, teaching style, and classroom environment were expressed by the students.

AbstractThis study examined the perceptions of students taking a subject entitled “Service Leadership” at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University which was developed using the model proposed by the Hong Kong Institute of Service Leadership and Management (HKI-SLAM). After taking this subject, students were invited to participate in a qualitative study where they used three descriptors and a metaphor to describe their experiences about the subject. Based on the reflections of 50 students, results showed that 96.1% of the descriptors and 90% of the metaphors used by the students were positive. In conjunction with the objective outcome evaluation, subjective outcome evaluation and process evaluation findings, the present study suggests that “Service Leadership” is a subject that can promote holistic development in Chinese university students in Hong Kong.

AbstractTo promote the holistic development of university students under the knowledge economy, a subject entitled “Service Leadership” was developed and piloted at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Process evaluation was carried out for 10 lectures, with each lecture observed by two independent observers who were registered social workers. Inter-rater reliability across the two observers was high, suggesting the observations were reliable. Results showed that program adherence was high in these lectures (mean=97.8%) and ratings on the implementation quality of the subject were also high. Some of the qualities of program implementation were significant predictors of the overall quality and success of the program. Consistent with other findings, the present study suggests that the implementation quality of “Service Leadership” was high.

AbstractCaring behavior is very important for an effective service leader. To help students recognize the importance of caring behavior and become caring service leaders, one lecture on caring behavior was designed for the subject “Service Leadership” at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. This article consists of two parts. The first part is on the concepts and theories of the topic, and the second part is on the detailed content of this lecture. In the first part, three primary elements of care (i.e. love, listening, and empathy) and the relevant skills of improving caring behavior in practice are firstly discussed. Next, the relationships between caring behavior of service leaders and positive outcomes of care for different stakeholders including leaders, followers, and organizations are examined. Finally, discussion and reflection on caring service leaders are summarized. In the second part, the corresponding lecture contents are presented, including two activities which are designed to facilitate students’ active learning and deep understanding concerning caring behavior.

AbstractUniversity students (n=58) responded to a 45-item subjective outcome evaluation scale after taking a credit-bearing elective subject titled “Service Leadership” at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in the first semester of the 2013–14 academic year. Results showed that the students generally displayed positive perceptions of the program content and the instructors, and most of them perceived the subject to be beneficial to different aspects of their development. As predicted, three subscales of the scale (Program Content, Program Implementer, and Program Benefits) were significantly correlated. Similar to the previous studies, perceived quality of the program but not quality of instructors and program benefits predicted the students’ overall satisfaction with the program.

Abstract Given that service industries contribute to 93% of Hong Kong’s GDP, an important question that should be asked is whether the education system can promote the development of service leadership among young people in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, service leadership programs specifically designed for university students are lacking in Hong Kong. In this paper, the basic tenets of the Service Leadership and Management framework are presented. Based on the fundamental postulation that effective service leadership is a function of moral character, competence and care (E=MC2), a subject called “Service Leadership” has recently been developed at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. This paper outlines the objectives, intended learning outcomes, syllabus, assessment, and references of the subject. The proposed evaluation strategies are also described.

AbstractAt The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, a 2-credit General Education subject entitled “Service Leadership” was developed to promote service leadership qualities (including leadership competencies, moral character, and caring disposition) in university students. The subject was piloted in one class with 60 students in the 2012/2013 academic year. Pretest and posttest data utilizing measures of positive youth development, life satisfaction, and service leadership qualities were collected. Positive changes in the program participants were found, particularly for measures in behavioral competence, moral competence, character strengths, general positive youth development qualities, and overall service leadership qualities. The present study provided preliminary support for the effectiveness of the subject in nurturing service leadership qualities of Chinese university students in Hong Kong.

AbstractThis study examined the perceptions of students taking a subject entitled “Service Leadership” at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. After taking the subject, the students were invited to respond to a subjective outcome evaluation measure assessing the perceived program qualities, instructor qualities and perceived benefits of the subject. Regarding the descriptive profile of responses to the items, students displayed positive perceptions of the subject content and teachers, and most of them regarded the subject to be beneficial to their development of service leadership qualities. While the three dimensions of subjective outcome were significantly correlated, perceived program qualities but not perceived instructor qualities predicted perceived effectiveness of the program.

AbstractA caring disposition is an important and fundamental attribute of a service leader. At the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, a lecture on a caring disposition in the subject “Service Leadership” was designed to help students understand the importance of caring dispositions. The curriculum design with reference to the basic concepts and theories as well as the content of the lecture are presented in this paper. In the first part of the paper, several uncaring cases are presented to serve as negative examples to inspire students’ reflection on caring leaders. Then, the three most important traits of a caring disposition, including awareness, love and nurturing people are introduced. Next, the relationships between a caring disposition and service leadership are analyzed and practical ways of improving a caring disposition are proposed. Finally, the impacts of a caring disposition on the leader-follower relationship are discussed. To provide a general overview of this lecture, the content including detailed lecture sessions and four designed activities relevant to a caring disposition are also presented in the paper.

Classroom environment is a competent platform for the students to learn and improve their understanding of the subject. An instructor’s primary responsibility lies in managing the students in a way they feel interested and focused during the class. With the aid of automated systems based on artificial intelligence, an instructor can get feedback on the students’ attention span in the class by monitoring their emotions using learning algorithms that can prove to be effective to improve the teaching style of the instructor that can in turn have positive effects on the class. In this paper, we propose an LSTM recurrent neural network trained on an emotional corpus database to extract the speech features and convolutional neural networks trained on the FER2013 facial emotion recognition database were used to predict the speech and facial emotions of the students respectively, in real-time. The live video and audio sequence of the students captured is fed to the learned model to classify the emotions individually. Once the emotions such as anger, sadness, happiness, surprise, fear, disgust and neutral were identified, a decision-making mechanism was used to analyze the predicted emotions and choose the overall group emotion by virtue of the highest peak value achieved. This research approach has the potential to be deployed in video conferences, online classes etc. This implementation proposal should effectively improve the classification accuracy and the relatability of the detected student emotions and facilitate in the design of sophisticated automated learning systems that can be a valuable tool in evaluating both the students and the instructors. The adapted research methodologies and their results are discussed and found to perform suggestively better than the other research works used in the comparison
