AbstractUsing coupled electromagnetic and hydrodynamic calculations, we elucidate theoretically the topographic transition from a random metallic surface to a periodic sub-wavelength grating by ultrashort laser ablation. The origin of this transition lies in the successive selection of hybrid surface waves scattered by random nanoholes. Contrary to the common belief that surface plasmon polaritons play the dominant role in the process and define the grating periodicity, we show that both quasi-cylindrical and surface plasmon waves are involved, whereas the diversity in the resulting spacings λ/2–λ (λ is the laser wavelength) is the manifestation of a broad frequency overlap of these waves, controlled by their relative phase shifts with respect to the plasmonic counterparts. The topography evolution imposes the dominant contribution to the surface sub-wavelength pattern by selecting the appropriate wave character from plasmonic modes to evanescent cylindrical waves. With the radiation dose, the grating periodicity exhibits a pronounced blue shift due to reinforced dipole–dipole coupling between the nanoholes and surface curvatures in the laser-processed area. This allows the creation of regular patterns with tunable periodicity.

This article presents the results of a study of hybrid spring wheat populations. Revealed different patterns of inheritance of important traits in F1 hybrids, which is caused by hereditary features of the original forms and circumstances. Analysis of hybrid populations showed that the dominant role in the formation of 1000 grains mass belongs to productivity and weight of grain with an ear, correlation coefficient r = 0.90 and amounted to r = 0.73, respectively. Found that the hybrid population in F4-5, created on the basis of grades Moscow 35, Esther, Agatha, Rome, Saratovskaya 29 (Russia), Ostinka (Ukraine) are a valuable material for selection of highly productive genotypes for future use breeding process.

The phenomenon of coupling between light and surface plasmon polaritons requires specific momentum matching conditions. In the case of a single scattering object on a metallic surface, such as a nanoparticle or a nanohole, the coupling between a broadband effect, i.e., scattering, and a discrete one, such as surface plasmon excitation, leads to Fano-like resonance lineshapes. The necessary phase matching requirements can be used to engineer the light–plasmon coupling and to achieve a directional plasmonic excitation. Here, we investigate this effect by using a chiral nanotip to excite surface plasmons with a strong spin-dependent azimuthal variation. This effect can be described by a Fano-like interference with a complex coupling factor that can be modified thanks to a symmetry breaking of the nanostructure.

AbstractHow to capture electromagnetic fields into sub-wavelength spatial scales has been a major challenge in nanophotonics, especially confining surface plasmon polaritons into regions as small as a few nanometers. Although various methods are proposed to achieve this goal, these methods require complex fabrication process. Here, we demonstrate experimentally the achievement of nanofocusing of surface plasmon polaritons with an intensity enhancement of three, using the simple structure with just pasting a sliver microwire on a sliver layer. And the designed structure has a well-defined gravitational field inspired by transformation optics. This simple design structure has applications to enhance light–matter interactions, such as nonlinear optical process and Raman scattering.

<p>Quasi-fractal gold nanoparticles can be synthesized via a modified and temperature controlled procedure initially used for the synthesis of star-like gold nanoparticles. The surface features of nanoparticles leads to improved enhancement of Raman scattering intensity of analyte molecules due to the increased number of sharp surface features possessing numerous localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR). The LSPR is affected by the size and shape of surface features as well as inter-nanoparticle interactions, as these affect the oscillation modes of electrons on the nanoparticle surfaces. The effect of the particle morphologies on the LSPR and further on the surface-enhancing capabilities of these nanoparticles is explored by comparing different nanoparticle morphologies and concentrations. We show that in a fixed nanoparticle concentration regime, Quasi-fractal gold nanoparticles provide the highest level of surface enhancement, whereas spherical nanoparticles provide the largest enhancement in a fixed gold concentration regime. The presence of highly branched features enables these nanoparticles to couple with a laser wavelength despite having no strong absorption band and hence no single surface plasmon resonance. This cumulative LSPR may allow these nanoparticle to be used in a variety of applications where laser wavelength flexibility is beneficial, such as in medical imaging applications where fluorescence at short laser wavelengths may be coupled with non-fluorescing long laser wavelengths for molecular sensing. </p>

This article presents the first detailed statistical analysis of the volatilities of various commonly encountered financial metrics used in contingent consideration (and earn-out) agreements. The valuation of contingent consideration using an option-based methodology and non-equity volatilities is becoming more common in business valuation. We provide clear evidence that the volatility of five financial metrics—revenue; earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA); EBIT, net income, and total assets—is strongly, negatively related to firm size and profitability. However, contrary to common belief, the volatility of these metrics is not related to a firm's financial leverage. We also calculated the volatilities using four different methodologies that are employed in practice. Although no theory guides the selection of methodologies, based upon our work, we have found that the year-over-year growth rate, using a quarterly frequency, provides the most reasonable results.

PhD education plays dominant role in the field of innovation, science, technology and economic development. This is being sponsored by some key scholarship agencies in the world among which Chinese Scholarship Council has emerged one among biggest. This research has been intended to understand the process of selection of PhD awardees and employment adjustment in their home country. An informal interview followed by a 5 point likert scale questionnaire were used to collected data from 200 PhD scholarship awardees in China and indigenous PhDs in Pakistan. This study has identified two main findings, one is the awareness issue about the scholarships availability is a serious issue and the other one is eligibility issue based on the number of schooling years required for PhD admission that may pose serious post PhD adjustment issues. While as a strong coordination gap does exist between Chinese scholarship agencies with other countries. A future research is being suggested to analyze comparative performance between Chinese and non-Chinese Ph.Ds.
