Abstract The present article investigates two questions: What determines citizens’ use of different media to seek information in a crisis situation, and what influences their evaluation of the information found. The case analysed is a major fire at a chemical storage facility in the harbour of Halmstad in Sweden, where there was a risk of toxic fumes reaching the city and its approximately 60,000 inhabitants. The study is part of a larger project, financed by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, and in this part, focus group interviews are analysed. The results point to an interaction between citizens’ perception of the world, the perceived information, and the development of how the situation is regarded, where sensemaking is the pivotal concept.

Abstract Background The World Health Organisation Caregiver Skills Training programme (WHO-CST) was developed to strengthen a caregiver’s skills in supporting their child’s development and the caregiver’s well-being. The WHO-CST Hong Kong (HK) was adapted to support families with children suspected of having autism spectrum disorder (ASD) while the families were waiting for a confirmed diagnosis.Aim This sequential mixed methods study aimed to explore the adaptation process, using a formative qualitative method. It assessed the acceptability, feasibility, and perceived benefits of the WHO-CST, using caregivers’ qualitative and quantitative prepost feedback.Methods Data examined included (1) two consultation meetings with stakeholders; (2) a detailed review of translated and adapted WHO-CST HK materials by Master Trainees (MTs) (n = 10) trained by WHO representatives; (3) need assessment focus group interviews with caregivers (n = 15) of children with ASD; and (4) prepost CST programme qualitative focus group interviews and quantitative evaluation (n = 11).Results Consultation with stakeholders suggested that the programme is acceptable for the local community, but the home visit and fidelity components were initially considered to be challenges for the feasibility and sustainability of the programme. Thematic analyses of the focus group interview with caregivers generated six subthemes from preprogramme focus group interviews and five subthemes from postprogramme focus group interviews. The programme was reported to be helpful for caregivers’ skills development and for aiding children’s verbal and social skills development. There was also improvement in caregivers’ mental health after completing the programme.Conclusion The prepilot evaluation findings of WHO-CST HK indicate that it is feasible and acceptable to implement the programme in a metropolitan area where families have busy working schedules. The findings indicate potential programme developments for supporting families in communities in high income countries.

Abstract This article deals with digitalization as a contribution to city center resilience, using Leipzig as an example. Focus group interviews illustrate that digital applications can attract to visit the city center and thus contribute to city center resilience. To reinforce these findings, the authors develop a prototype of a digital map covering Leipzig’s city center that is tested by means of 70 go-along interviews. The interviews show that linking digital functions and location-specific information thereby can be effective regarding city center resilience.

This article examines kids' talk about cars, exploring what their talk reveals about the dynamics of family life among families with teenagers. 1Using indepth and focus group interviews with teens, this article identifies how the car serves as cultural object around which parents and kids collaboratively negotiate both kids' autonomy from the world of family and their increasing responsibility to family that usually follows learning to drive. Highlighting the accounts of teens, this article identifies the central role of gender, class, and culture as parents and their young adult children collaboratively negotiate around the car. This analysis sets these family negotiations within the context of broader economic and social shifts often associated with “the new global economy,” including changing demands of work, mounting economic pressures for American families, and the eclipsing of family members' free time.

In qualitative interviews, challenges such as deviations from the topic, interruptions, silences or counter-questions are inevitable. It is debatable whether the researcher should try to alleviate them or consider them as important indicators of power relations. In this methodological article, we adopt the latter view and examine the episodes of counter-talk that emerge in qualitative interviews on cultural practices among underprivileged popular classes by drawing on 49 individual and focus group interviews conducted in the highly egalitarian context of Finland. Our main aim is to demonstrate how counter-talk emerging in interview situations could be fruitfully analysed as moral boundary drawing. We identify three types of counter-talk: resisting the situation, resisting the topic, and resisting the interviewer. While the first type unites many of the typical challenges inherent to qualitative interviewing in general (silences, deviations from the topic and so forth), the second one shows that explicit taste distinctions are an important feature of counter-talk, yet the interviewees mostly discuss them as something belonging to the personal sphere. Finally, the third type reveals how the strongest counter-talk and clearest moral boundary stemmed from the interviewees’ attitudes towards the interviewer herself. We argue that counter-talk in general should be given more importance as a key element of the qualitative interview. We demonstrate that all three types of counter-talk are crucial to properly understanding the power relations and moral boundaries present in qualitative interviews and that cultural practices are a particularly good topic to tease them out.
