Abstract In this article, we present the preliminary results of a national survey conducted by INDIRE on head teachers communities and professional networks. About one-fourth of the total population of Italian public school leaders participated in the survey. One of the main intents of this research is to contribute to understanding of the phenomenon of professional networks frequented by school leaders and to pave the way for a further reflection on how to use such networks for head teachers’ training so as to support their daily professional practice conducted too often in isolation. This contribution is synergetic with what was envisaged by the new Italian school reform introduced with Law 107/2015 and, in particular, with the roles of the school leaders and the networks. This research is conducted within the INDIRE DsinRete2 research project.

In studies on teacher professional development, the embodiment of teachers’ values in professional practice has emerged as an important area of focus. Employing the sociocultural approach, this study discusses the link between teachers’ acts and underlying values based on a Vietnamese teacher’s detailed field notes on cases of school reform through the introduction of Japanese lesson study for learning community. Drawing on the concepts of inspection and stroll, the study describes the discrepancy between conventional observational acts and emerging ones. Inspection refers to the actions and values held by teachers that underline compliance with the prescribed curriculum and educational bureaucratic procedures, while stroll refers to a disposition that entails actions and values appreciating each pupil’s existence and learning as it is, without rigid bureaucratic perspectives. The finding was that the teacher’s act of stroll embeds new underlying values in her/his professional work; similarly, how she/he performs a stroll could inform her/his professional knowledge and identity. Lesson study can offer the teacher the experience of seeing self that generates the possible momentum of these parallel shifts.

SummaryIn 1966, a National Survey on Fecundity and Fertility was organized in Belgium. Approximately 3000 married women under 41 years of age and living with their husbands were interviewed and asked about their reproductive histories. The present paper records the sociobiological aims and methods and some preliminary results of this survey. The aims were to:(1) study the influences of contraception on human needs and qualities, in this case mainly potential fecundity;(2) study the influence of attempts to increase the potential fecundity level in modern society on fecundity gene frequencies;(3) study the influences of the overall socio-cultural environment on fecundity and fertility variables with particular reference to differences in social status in Western society;(4) analyse the role of social assortment of fecundity and fertility variables on the biological structure, and possibly the composition, of modern populations.A relatively large, but far from complete body of data has been collected on a number of individual fecundity and fertility variables, on the medical processes employed to increase fecundity, on contraception, and on a number of conventional sociological and demographic variables.The principles underlying the present approach to the study of fecundity are explained, and a few preliminary results for one of the general fecundity classifications are shown.The information collected on contraception has been qualitatively analysed and a correction and evaluation method is described. Data on the use of the different contraceptive methods show that substantial sections of the Belgian population are limiting their family size in a way which is inefficient, from both sexual and familial standpoints.

Abstract Date Presented 04/13/21 This study explored OT practitioners' experiences during the early stages of the 2019 coronavirus pandemic. Preliminary results showed that participants were working with infected patients, reported increased signs and symptoms of professional burnout, and professional ethics were or may have been compromised. More research is needed to determine if the results of this study are short term or will be an ongoing issue in professional practice as the pandemic progresses. The effective operation of a school unit relies on various factors, the most critical of which is leadership, as it this which shapes the working environment through which the school succeeds or fails. Indeed, an effective leader can inspire vision and promote educational policy in the interests of the school and other stakeholders. This leadership role in schools is undertaken by head teachers, who are called to act as supervisors of the school’s human resources in parallel with their purely administrative work. In order for school leaders to achieve these outcomes, however, they must be adequately trained so as to be competent in undertaking the arduous task of leading a school unit. Consequently, in order for school leaders to carry out their daunting tasks successfully—in other words, achieve the best possible results with the fewest sacrifices and least effort—they must possess certain knowledge and aptitudes. For this reason, the staffing of the school units in any country (and hence in Greece) with capable school leaders should be the top priority of the State, while measures should be taken to ensure that the processes for selecting school leaders and for their professional development remain objective and systematic, if the country intends to implement an educational policy efficiently and effectively. Taking into account that the school leader is not born but becomes, and that school leaders are central to the administration of a country’s educational system, it is vital that a system of selection and development of schools’ head teachers be institutionalized.
