Abstract This paper addresses an important issue to find relationship between the brand image and its determinants. Based on a data set of 136 brand characteristics measured for 700 top American national brands obtained from a survey of 4769 respondents as well as secondary sources (Lovett, Peres, and Shachar. 2014. “A Data Set of Brands and Their Characteristics.” Marketing Science 33 (4): 609–17), this study adopted an established econometrics approach (Stochastic frontier analysis) that has not been extensively applied in the marketing literature. The approach discussed in this paper can be used as an analysis framework where the concept of efficiency is brought into the picture in analyzing the relationship between the brand image with its associates. It is found that competency and familiarity are two main features that increase brand equity, whereas perceived risk and excitement decreases it.

This study aims to find out the efficiency of the administration of Palembang City, 2002 – 2016 period in building the area with and components that caused whether or not administrative expenditure of an area was efficient. This study uses data secondary data that is realization data of administrative expenditure, average employe’s expenditure, capital expenditure and local revenue. This data was tested by stochastic frontier analysis (SFA). The results of estimation from the stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) found that the administrative expenditure of the city of Palembang was inefficiency. The average variable of employee expenditure has a negative related and has a significant effect to administration costs in Palembang City. The relationship of variable capital expenditure with the administration costs of the regional government in the city of Palembang has a positive and significant effect. And the Local Revenue variables have a positive and significant effect to administration costs in Palembang City.

Forecast combination has received a great deal of attention in the tourism domain. In this article, we propose a novel performance-based tourism forecast combination model by applying a multiple-criteria decision-making framework and the stochastic frontier analysis technique to determine combination weights for individual tourism forecast models. Thirteen time-series models are used to generate individual forecast tourism models, and five competing forecast combination models are selected to evaluate the forecast performance. Using the tourism forecast competition data set, we conclude that the proposed combination model significantly and statistically outperforms the five competing combination models in most cases based on multiple performance indicators. Our results show that the proposed model offers a good solution to identify optimal weights for individual tourism forecast models.

This study aims to gain a better understanding of how effective government subsidization is in helping foster firms’ innovation. Drawing on the exploration/exploita- tion perspective and based on data collected from Statistical Yearbook on Science and Technology Activities of Industrial Enterprises, we look into the relationship between gov- ernment subsidization and Chinese firms’ innovation efficiency by applying a stochastic frontier analysis. The results show that when government subsidies are provided in small scale, firms’ innovation efficiency decreases; only when government subsidies increase to a certain scale, does firms’ innovation efficiency start to increase. We suggest that govern- ment subsidization would generate better innovation performance should it concentrate on a smaller number of firms at one time. As existing research is still inconclusive regarding the relationship between government subsidization and firms’ technological innovation output, we shed light on the issue by revealing a “U-shaped” relationship between the two.

This paper examines the efficiency and its relation to profitability in Turkish banking sector by employing Panel Stochastic Frontier Approach. In the post crises period, extensive structural changes have taken place and a great number of new developments have occurred, affecting the efficiency of banking sector. This is the first study that employs panel stochastic frontier approach for banking efficiency in Turkey. In this research, both cost and profit efficiency measures are estimated for the panel data consisting of 32 banks between 2002–2007. Results suggest that there is cost efficiency gain and convergence in the efficiency levels of banks. As another interesting result, foreign banks are less efficient and state banks are more efficient. This paper also analyzes the relation between efficiency and profitability and finds no robust relation between them. However, the bank size matters more for profitability.

Stochastic frontier analysis, which is used to estimate technical efficiency, is extended to examine the market structure, conduct and performance hypothesis for the U.S. trucking industry. The technical efficiency measure takes into account not only the relationship between inputs used in the production of output, but it also examines the importance of market structure conduct factors to the performance of the firm. An empirical application to U.S. trucking carriers over the period 1994-2003 is examined. Results reveal that average haul, average load, debt-to-equity and market concentration significantly affected technical efficiency. Capital, fixed and variable input variables were significant in the production function equation.

Human capital and a transformed data set are combined into a stochastic frontier analysis to estimate the technical efficiency of star-rated hotels in 30 provinces and municipalities of China for the period of 2011–2015. The influences of revenue diversification across room, food & beverage, and other services and incoming tourists on technical efficiency, labor, and capital productivities are addressed. Hotels in Zhejiang, Shanghai and Tianjin are found to be the most efficient. For the efficiency and productivities determinants, per capita GDP of the hosting province is the primary determinant, hotel ranking and diversification in revenue sources contribute to efficiency and partial productivities, while tourists from different origins bring about diversified impacts. Hotels located in regions with more Taiwan tourists are more efficient with higher capital productivity. Tourists from Hong Kong, Macau, and foreign countries have brought about both positive and negative linkages to efficiency and partial productivities. In general, hotels can reallocate their resources to diversify their services for better efficiency and productivities. In contrast, expanding external markets cannot guarantee higher efficiency and better productivities. Hotel management should be careful in formulating their marketing strategies.

This paper tackles the problem of aggregate TFP measurement using stochastic frontier analysis. We estimate a world production frontier for a sample of 75 countries over a long period. The “Bauer-Kumbhakar” decomposition of TFP is applied to a smaller sample in order to evaluate the effects of changes in efficiency (technical and allocative), scale effects, and technical change. Estimated technical efficiency scores are compared to productivity indexes offered by nonfrontier studies. We conclude that differences in productivity are responsible for virtually all the differences of growth performance between developed and developing nations and that a large part of this is due to allocative efficiency.

This study tested the effect of introducing moving-block signaling on the technical efficiency of urban metro rail systems. The study used a panel data set of 27 urban metro systems across 20 countries for 2004 to 2012. When moving-block signaling was considered as a treatment, the effect of the associated benefits on output efficiency levels was able to be measured. Stochastic frontier analysis was employed to estimate technical efficiencies for each metro, and then propensity score matching was applied to evaluate the effect of the type of signaling on technical efficiency. The study allowed the selection of appropriate reference groups and accounted for confounding factors. The study is novel in its provision of empirical evidence of this nature. The results indicate that the technical efficiency of a metro can be improved by 11.5%.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate and compare bank efficiency between the two Maghreb countries, Tunisia and Morocco, over the period 2005–2014. Design/methodology/approach The authors follow the stochastic frontier analysis, where the preferred cost model is determined via various hypothesis tests based on the maximum likelihood estimation. Then, the first and the second derivates of the cost function are employed to determine scale elasticities, scale inefficiencies and technological progress. Findings Specification tests indicate that the Fourier Flexible form provides better fit to the data set. Further, the estimated model shows that Tunisian and Moroccan banks’ efficiency is positively affected by banking service quality, but negatively influenced by both bank capitalization and GDP growth. Overall, Moroccan banks are found to be the most efficient despite the decrease of efficiency levels in both countries. Additionally, foreign banks have a higher scale inefficiency and, therefore, a lower cost efficiency. Equally, the technical progress raises banking costs in both countries, providing a decrease in efficiency scores. Practical implications The findings of this study provide novel insights to Tunisian and Moroccan policy makers on the relevance of the smaller banks’ consolidation to improve bank efficiency by achieving unrealized economies of scale. Also, more reforms should be implemented in Tunisia to reduce non-performing loans. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first which offers a comparison between Tunisian and Moroccan banks to clarify the sources of inefficiency and to make strategic decisions.

The study explore the relationship between road and spending infrastructure with tax capacity in Indonesia. Using stochastic frontier analysis method and tax revenue data of 34 provinces in 2011–2016, this study confirms positive relationship between infrastructure spending and central and local tax capacity, while the availability of road infrastructure has positive significant impact only on local tax capacity. The level of income and education indicates a positive significantly effect both on central and local tax capacity. However, the greater the dominance of the agricultural sector in the economy tends to reduce central tax capacity. Similarly, tax administration factors aect central tax capacity positively.
